Nevadan to Nevadan

promoting the art of poetry, literacy and learning

Dear Nevadans,

I’m profoundly honored to be serving as your Poet Laureate, and I’m looking forward to meeting and working with you. As you may know, I recently retired from teaching at the University of Nevada, Reno, and although this was a bittersweet milestone in my long residency in our state, knowing that I’ll be working with and for you, talking about poetry and storytelling in our beloved Nevada, is something that sweetened this passage.

I am interested in booking workshops, readings, and literary events as they are requested and scheduled. Don’t hesitate to reach out with inquiries and opportunities. I value and sincerely desire your input, as we are all designing what this position might mean and might do. And this design needs your voices.

With that in mind, we (I and the most excellent Nevada Arts Council) invite you to participate in a statewide poetry project, Nevadan to Nevada: What I Want to Tell You. This will be an epistolary project, which is just a fancy way of saying “letter poems.” What we hope is that Nevadans will reach out to one another to tell our individual and community stories. If we tell one another our stories honestly, authentically, and with grace and integrity, we will not only be communicating Nevadan to Nevadan, but we’ll be shining light on what it means to be a Nevadan, and this light will shine beyond our mere borders.

Please see the link below for more information about this project and how you might participate. And don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly at the email addresses below.

I look forward to coming into your communities, and I most look forward to hearing what you have to say.
