Alice Cazenave, a London-based photographic artist, will offer a free introductory chemigram workshop for adults on Wednesday October 26 at 6pm at the Silver City Schoolhouse at 385 High Street, Silver City, Nevada 89428. Participants will learn about the basic chemistry of darkroom printing and mix their own photographic developers using plant matter. This will be used to make tones on the photographic paper surface, creating abstract prints. The workshop provides a chance to use low-toxicity photographic chemistry.

Part I of the workshop involves heating plant matter and mixing homemade developer chemistries.

Part II involves learning how to make tones and marks on the paper surface.

Each participant will take home two or three unique abstract prints from the workshop.

Alice Cazenave’s photographic work has been published in The British Journal of Photography, The Guardian and the New York Times. She has exhibited internationally, and gives guest lectures at institutions including The Science Museum, London and Experimental Photo Festival, Barcelona. Alice is co-developer at the Sustainable Darkroom where she researches lower-toxicity, plant-based chemistries as substitutes for traditional darkroom materials. Alice lectures in Applied Critical Thinking at Canterbury Christchurch University and is undertaking a PhD at Goldsmiths University, London.

The workshop is sponsored by the Resident Artist Program in Silver City, Nevada. Artists, musicians, and writers from around the world stay at McCormick House for up to several months in exchange for offering free public performances, exhibitions, workshops, poetry readings, etc. in Silver City and other communities in the Northern Nevada region. Silver City is located within the historic Comstock region 3 miles south of Virginia City.
