The City of Las Vegas, Office of Cultural Affairs, presents “Diaspora”
What is the Asian Pacific Islander in the context of American society?
It’s too broad of a category that escapes a cohesive definition. One thing in common is our history of a series of “interventions” from the west — one that has spurred a wave of migrations to the many regions of the Pacific and back.
It’s an “imperfect union,” but a union nonetheless; a symbiosis in transition towards unity that reverberates as well throughout American culture and in the upheavals of its early history.
This group exhibition presents the different “facets” of our diverse American culture — a collection of works that, in many ways, alludes to the different experiences of assimilation and integration of Asian Pacific Islanders, a snapshot that attempts to manifest this perpetually transforming identity within the communities of our southern Nevada region and beyond.
