Ella [eh-yah]: Women in the EZLN is an exhibition based on Diana M Espinoza Chamale’s Master’s thesis: “Decolonizing Mexican American Museums: Exhibiting Indigenous Feminism in the 1994 Zapatista Political Uprising”

“Ella: Women in the EZLN” focuses on the roles of the women involved in the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN) in Mexico. This bilingual museum exhibit shares their story, as told through their own words, and brings attention to a new audience in order to acknowledge their efforts and support their cause. A commitment to Indigenous paradigms and storytelling informed the creation of this exhibit as a way for the Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Tojolabal, Chol, Mame and Zoque peoples to hold greater control over their historical narratives and representation. It is with great hope that the stories of these amazing mujeres may challenge and redefine how we view Mexican, Mexican American and Indigenous women. The exhibit will be on display in the Sheppard Fine Art Gallery on the main UNR campus from May 19 – June 7.

This exhibition examines the Women of the EZLN and is curated by historian Diana M. Espinoza Chamale and Mujeres Zapatistas.
