The 2026 series works represent a range of artist and movement approaches locally\, nationally\, and internationally: a work blending Colombian folkloric dance with queer and experimental movement to explore identity\, resilience\, and collective transformation (Alexis Restrepo; Medellín\, Colombia; Otredanza compañía artística LGBTI de Medellín)\, a performance exploring the struggles of India’s LGBTQ community and family abandondment (Sudeshna Dey; West Bengal\, India)\, and a duet examining the challenges of communication and connection in modern life (Yan Longdan; Chongqing\, China). \nAbout MDD’s Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change \nFounded in 2010\, MDD’s Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change is a conversation facilitated by curator\, choreographer\, and scholar Mark DeGarmo\, Ph.D.\, with audiences and diverse global dance makers presenting works-in-process. It is a unique opportunity to demystify the creation of choreography and to enjoy a wide range of performance approaches\, genres\, and styles. VSPS presents under-represented and under-recognized dance makers across New York City and state\, the USA\, and internationally. Since February 2019\, MDD has presented in 42 salons\, including 2 Virtual International Arts Festivals\, featuring 566 total artists from 23 states and 31 countries. Past audiences and dance makers have remarked: \n“The salon was a warm\, welcoming\, positive environment!” \n“I loved the convenience of watching the performance on Zoom!” \nAbout Mark DeGarmo Dance \nMark DeGarmo Dance began operations in 1982\, incorporated in 1987\, and celebrates its 39th anniversary in 2026 as a leading New York City nonprofit dance organization located in Manhattan’s Lower East Side at NYC-owned The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center (The Clemente). President Barack Obama commended DeGarmo and MDD for your service to your community and the nation. The National Endowment for the Arts deemed MDD’s NYC dance education program for under- resourced public elementary students living under the federal poverty rate “a national model.” National Dance Education Organization research shows that a mere 1-7% of USA elementary schools have such a dance education program as our Partnerships in Literacy through Dance & Creativity. \nhttps://markdegarmodance.org \nFollow Mark DeGarmo Dance on Facebook\, Instagram\, LinkedIn\, YouTube\, and Vimeo.  \nOur programs are supported\, in part\, by private and public funds from American Online Giving Foundation; Jody and John Arnhold; Benevity; Frances and Benjamin Benenson Foundation; Bernheim Foundation; Blackbaud Giving Fund; Lisa and Dick Cashin; PJ and Dawn Dearden; Rev. SUMMARY:Mark Twain Days & Mark Twain Reading Room Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Brewery Arts Center and Visit Carson City\, the Nevada State Library will host the following events for the Third Annual Mark Twain Days celebration: \n\nThursday\, Oct. 16\, 2025\, 4 p.m.: The Nevada State Library\, Archives and Public Records holds one of the most significant Twain collections in the western United States\, as noted by several Twain scholars. The new Mark Twain Reading Room was created to showcase this collection alongside works by other Sagebrush School authors\, including Dan DeQuille and Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins. The library will also feature access to Twain digital collections on the library’s website\, as well as microfilm of the Territorial Enterprise — the leading Virginia City newspaper where Twain served as a correspondent for three years. Carson City dignitaries will be invited to attend.\nFriday\, Oct. 17\, 2025\, 2-4 p.m.: The Nevada State Library will host two authors for literary workshops: Dani Putney will present an exploration of poetry and its creative process\, while Brad McMullen\, Nevada’s state folklorist\, will discuss the state’s rich traditions and cultural heritage. Each session will last about 45 minutes.\nFriday\, Oct. 17\, 2025\, all day: The Nevada State Archives will offer a self-guided open house featuring items and exhibits from Twain’s era. While the Archives does not hold Twain’s papers\, its collection highlights the early territorial governance of Nevada that helped shape Twain’s experience.\nFriday\, Oct. 17\, 2025\, all day. The State Library will offer fun\, interactive Twain-themed activities\, including a Twain-related library scavenger hunt\, coloring sheets\, and the chance to take home a printed souvenir page of the Territorial Enterprise from the library’s microfilm collection.\nFor more events\, see the Brewery Arts Center’s Mark Twain Days activity schedule.

SUMMARY:Las Vegas Writes Book Launch and Conversation with the Authors
DESCRIPTION:When the lake runs dry\, we’ll know the value of water. \nMonsoon Season: Las Vegas Writers on Water in the Desert\, the 16th volume in the acclaimed Las Vegas Writes series\, gathers a powerful chorus of voices exploring the desert city’s resilience and hidden beauty. Join Nevada Humanities and the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District for a conversation with featured Monsoon Season authors Erika Dagri\, Sally Denton\, Scott Dickensheets\, JM Huck\, Andrew S. Nicholson\, Marlene Roque\, Geoff Schumacher\, John L. Smith\, and editor Jarret Keene. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Book sales and signing to follow. \nLegendary Nevada writers John L. Smith\, Geoff Schumacher\, and Scott Dickensheets deliver moving essays on loss—of innocence\, water\, love—reminding us why they remain pillars of the region’s literary landscape. Rising talents Marlene Roque\, JM Huck\, and Erika Dagri bring fresh perspectives\, writing with generosity and tenderness about Hispanic machismo\, Southwestern art\, and the rare magic of desert rain. Iconic Nevada author and historian Sally Denton provides a lovely overview of Las Vegas that reminds us of our city’s hold on the popular imagination. University of Nevada\, Las Vegas professor Andrew S. Nicholson\, meanwhile\, closes the collection with a luminous prose poem. Early nature writer Mary Austin’s essay “The Land of Little Rain” is reprinted here\, too. Finally\, local comics artist Safiyya Bintali provides the cover illustration. \nWith the support of Huntington Press and Nevada Humanities\, Monsoon Season affirms the vitality of the Las Vegas literary scene in these arid and parched times. These essays testify to a city that\, like Southern Nevada itself\, endures and astonishes when the rains finally arrive.
