Attend this session to help you prepare your grant application. \nThe Folklife Artist Grant (FLA) supports traditional arts projects by folk artists and culture bearers. Eligible projects focus on the transmission of folk arts or traditions that are practiced\, valued\, and shared within culturally specific communities in Nevada. \nThe Nevada Heritage Fellowship from the Nevada Arts Council recognizes tradition bearers living in Nevada whose body of work has contributed to Nevada’s traditional arts heritage. SUMMARY:Nevada Old-Time Fiddlers' Contest
DESCRIPTION:The Nevada Old-Time Fiddlers’ Contest will be held May 16 & 17\, 2025\, at the Eureka Opera House in Eureka\, Nevada. This event is one of many state and regional events held annually throughout the United States to preserve and promote the unique musical art form of old-time fiddling. Contestants have five minutes to perform three traditional dance tunes including a hoedown\, a waltz\, and a tune of choice such as a jig\, reel\, polka\, two-step\, etc. Friday’s entertainment features a “hot fiddle” contest\, a twin fiddling exhibition\, and the judges’ performance. Saturday’s competition begins at 9 a.m. on the opera house stage and runs all day. \n

DESCRIPTION:Bob Nylen\, retired curator with the Nevada State Museum\, has researched and written about the fascinating history of frontier baseball in Nevada. His talk will highlight how the sport spread across Nevada in the late 1860s\, capturing the excitement of Nevadans. He will cover how teams were formed\, how games were played\, and why the scores were so high. Nylen also will tell how he organized and umpired a reenactment game between Carson City and Virginia City teams in 1992\, using rules from 1869. Bob\, born and raised in the Chicago area\, is a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan.

The award-earning Wild Nevada series features Orr taking road trips and having outdoor adventures all around the Silver State. The series is currently in production on its eighth season and has more than 75 episodes in national distribution throughout the public television system. Wild Nevada is featured on more than 200 PBS members station across the country. An alum of the University of Nevada\, Reno\, and the Reynolds School of Journalism\, Orr is an enthusiastic outdoors woman\, and an avid hiker and runner.
