SUMMARY:Lee Lanier: You Write the Story
DESCRIPTION:Lee Lanier\, of Lee Lanier Paints Art Gallery located in the Arts Factory\, has created this interactive exhibit inviting viewers to write the narratives for his quirky\, acrylic paintings. Lanier created the exhibit based on his opinion that visitors to LLPAG often had more interesting interpretations of his paintings than he did. The characters in the paintings interact with surrounding objects or each other\, and are often based on mythological\, literary\, or pop-culture archetypes. Although these paintings are narrative in nature\, they present scenes midway through a particular tale so that the viewer can decide what is transpiring. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nI am fascinated with old stories. The inspiration for my works almost always starts with a historical\, literary\, and mythological character. Like Renaissance artists\, I weave complex narratives with multiple posed figures. I am drawn to universal human themes such as life and death\, temptation and faith\, and creativity and industry. My end goal is to create works of art that can be viewed multiple times while inspiring spirited conversations among groups of dissimilar viewers. \nOn exhibit at Windmill Library from February 13\, 2024 through April 28\, 2024

SUMMARY:Angelina Jordan jazzy retro-pop live concert
DESCRIPTION:18 year old Angelina studied primarily the Jazz greats\, but she has covered more than 80 singers from nearly every genre\, and she writes her own original songs\, which are various forms of Retro-Pop. SUMMARY:Pitching Your Work to Publications: A Workshop with Tajja Isen
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nThis hybrid seminar/workshop on pitching to publications will operate in two parts: In the first hour\, we will discuss what makes a strong pitch; how that varies depending on the type of story or outlet where you’re sending your work (newspaper\, magazine\, literary journal\, etc.); and analyze a few (anonymized) examples of successful and unsuccessful pitches to different publications to get a clearer sense of what works vs. what doesn’t. \nAfter a short break\, the second hour will be workshop-based: A number of participants will submit a 2-3 paragraph pitch in advance of the meeting and indicate whether they are open to circulating their pitch to the group for discussion (with the caveat that we may not have time to get through everyone’s pitches during the session). Regardless of whether writers want their work discussed in the workshop\, all participants will receive written feedback on their pitches.  \n**There are also a limited number of spots available to attend the session without submitting work beforehand—there’s an option to indicate that preference in the form below. \nTajja Isen is the author of Some of My Best Friends: Essays on Lip Service\, named a Best Book of the Year by Electric Literature\, The Globe and Mail\, CBC Books\, and Daily Hive. As an editor\, she has worked at Catapult and The Walrus\, and she is co-editor of the essay anthology The World as We Knew It: Dispatches from a Changing Climate. She has written for The Atlantic\, Vulture\, Time\, and Longreads\, among other outlets. Her next book is a memoir on mentorship and ambition. She is a Spring 2024 Shearing Fellow at Black Mountain Institute at UNLV. \n\n

SUMMARY:The Dysfunction of Food: On Food That Isn’t Beautiful or Comforting or Delicious with Kim Foster
DESCRIPTION:Kim Foster\, James Beard Award-winning Author of the forthcoming The Meth Lunches: The Care and Feeding of a Drug Addict\, St. Martin’s Press. \nIn this lecture\, Kim Foster will examine the ways food can signify and complicate dysfunction in Las Vegas\, for both individuals and communities – those with empty tables\, and those with full plates. \nWhat does food mean to people in addiction? Or psychosis? Or in jail? Or for people who don’t have kitchens? What should it mean to the rest of us? \nMost of us think about food as a conduit for connection it’s a cliché now: “Food brings us together” and “Food connects us.” The messages are everywhere. A sea of perfectly constructed social media food images floods our feeds daily. It’s all beautiful\, heavily curated\, intentional\, and privileged. The people eating are happy\, smiling\, and having a ball. It’s a monoculture of food happiness. Foster is a contributor to this culture as a food writer. \nBut food is also a conduit for disconnection\, stress\, family trauma\, and workplace abuse. In families\, the table\, the eating together\, the passing of plates may hold discomfort\, anxiety\, and anger. It brings up things that can\, in other environments\, be let go. For others\, the table holds scarcity\, an annihilating reminder of their poverty. Others still have food on their table\, but no one sitting next to them to share it. \nFood can be a way to control. And punish. And abuse. And a means to force people to conform. And\, there is having no food at all. \nFood is often a litmus test. What we are eating and how we are eating tells us something integral about how we are doing\, and what our lives are like. \nCo-sponsored by the Black Mountain Institute.

SUMMARY:Their Divine Fires Book Launch with Wendy Chen
DESCRIPTION:Join BMI and the UNLV Department of English as we celebrate Creative Writing faculty member Wendy Chen for her debut novel\, Their Divine Fires. A captivating and intimate story interwoven with folktale and myth\, the book is shaped by love affairs of three generations of Chinese women across one hundred years of revolutions\, both political and personal. Drawing on the lives of her great-grandmother and her great-uncles—both of whom fought on the side of the Communists—as well as her mother’s experiences during the Cultural Revolution\, Dr. Chen infuses Their Divine Fires with a passion that will transport the reader back to powerful moments in history while bringing us close to the women who persisted despite the forces all around them. \nWendy Chen is also the author of the poetry collection UNEARTHINGS (Tavern Books). Her translations of Song-dynasty woman writer Li Qingzhao are forthcoming from Farrar\, Straus & Giroux in 2025 in a collection titled THE MAGPIE AT NIGHT. She is the recipient of prizes and fellowships from the Academy of American Poets\, MacDowell\, & elsewhere. Her writing has appeared widely in prestigious venues such as Freeman’s\, A Public Space\, & Mid-American Review. Her work has been translated into multiple languages and adapted into musical compositions. She has taught and spoken at colleges\, universities\, and arts organizations such as the Academy of American Poets\, Poets & Writers\, Poetry Foundation\, & Yale University.\nShe is the editor of Figure 1 and associate editor-in-chief of Tupelo Quarterly.
