SUMMARY:Mark Twain Days & Mark Twain Reading Room Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Brewery Arts Center and Visit Carson City\, the Nevada State Library will host the following events for the Third Annual Mark Twain Days celebration: \n\nThursday\, Oct. 16\, 2025\, 4 p.m.: The Nevada State Library\, Archives and Public Records holds one of the most significant Twain collections in the western United States\, as noted by several Twain scholars. The new Mark Twain Reading Room was created to showcase this collection alongside works by other Sagebrush School authors\, including Dan DeQuille and Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins. The library will also feature access to Twain digital collections on the library’s website\, as well as microfilm of the Territorial Enterprise — the leading Virginia City newspaper where Twain served as a correspondent for three years. Carson City dignitaries will be invited to attend.\nFriday\, Oct. 17\, 2025\, 2-4 p.m.: The Nevada State Library will host two authors for literary workshops: Dani Putney will present an exploration of poetry and its creative process\, while Brad McMullen\, Nevada’s state folklorist\, will discuss the state’s rich traditions and cultural heritage. Each session will last about 45 minutes.\nFriday\, Oct. 17\, 2025\, all day: The Nevada State Archives will offer a self-guided open house featuring items and exhibits from Twain’s era. While the Archives does not hold Twain’s papers\, its collection highlights the early territorial governance of Nevada that helped shape Twain’s experience.\nFriday\, Oct. 17\, 2025\, all day. The State Library will offer fun\, interactive Twain-themed activities\, including a Twain-related library scavenger hunt\, coloring sheets\, and the chance to take home a printed souvenir page of the Territorial Enterprise from the library’s microfilm collection.\nFor more events\, see the Brewery Arts Center’s Mark Twain Days activity schedule.

SUMMARY:Las Vegas Writes Book Launch and Conversation with the Authors
DESCRIPTION:When the lake runs dry\, we’ll know the value of water. \nMonsoon Season: Las Vegas Writers on Water in the Desert\, the 16th volume in the acclaimed Las Vegas Writes series\, gathers a powerful chorus of voices exploring the desert city’s resilience and hidden beauty. Join Nevada Humanities and the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District for a conversation with featured Monsoon Season authors Erika Dagri\, Sally Denton\, Scott Dickensheets\, JM Huck\, Andrew S. Nicholson\, Marlene Roque\, Geoff Schumacher\, John L. Smith\, and editor Jarret Keene. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Book sales and signing to follow. \nLegendary Nevada writers John L. Smith\, Geoff Schumacher\, and Scott Dickensheets deliver moving essays on loss—of innocence\, water\, love—reminding us why they remain pillars of the region’s literary landscape. Rising talents Marlene Roque\, JM Huck\, and Erika Dagri bring fresh perspectives\, writing with generosity and tenderness about Hispanic machismo\, Southwestern art\, and the rare magic of desert rain. Iconic Nevada author and historian Sally Denton provides a lovely overview of Las Vegas that reminds us of our city’s hold on the popular imagination. University of Nevada\, Las Vegas professor Andrew S. Nicholson\, meanwhile\, closes the collection with a luminous prose poem. Early nature writer Mary Austin’s essay “The Land of Little Rain” is reprinted here\, too. Finally\, local comics artist Safiyya Bintali provides the cover illustration. \nWith the support of Huntington Press and Nevada Humanities\, Monsoon Season affirms the vitality of the Las Vegas literary scene in these arid and parched times. These essays testify to a city that\, like Southern Nevada itself\, endures and astonishes when the rains finally arrive.

SUMMARY:"The Traveler" Creative Aging Writing & Storytelling Session
DESCRIPTION:“The Traveler” Creative Aging Writing & Storytelling Workshops\n\n\n\nTravel is wherever your mind takes you and memories await you!\n\n\n\nThe best way to memorialize your travels through life is to write about them and/or talk about them. In this fun\, interactive writing and storytelling workshop for older adults\, you’ll have the opportunity to do both.\n\n\n\nJoin Nevada Arts Council and Lifetime Arts teaching artist\, Joylynn M. Ross\, and your fellow Nevadans or drop-in visitors for 90 minutes of reliving and retelling a moment worth writing and talking about.\n\nThe focus and theme is a moment from one of your past travels. If you need help unearthing one of those experiences\, don’t worry. There will be plenty of hands-on assistance and engaging prompts provided to you by your instructor and your peers … because in this workshop\, each participant is both the student and the teacher. No one will have to travel this writing and storytelling journey alone!\n\n\n\nAnd keep in mind that traveling doesn’t have to be in a plane\, train\, boat\, or automobile across the map. SUMMARY:Breakfast Event Featuring Russell Shorto Author of "Taking Manhattan"
DESCRIPTION:A Special Breakfast event at The Suncoast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas featuring Russell Shorto\, author of a new book “Taking Manhattan”. \nAmerican Heritage Partners is honored to present a Zoom talk by Russell Shorto\, an author\, historian\, and journalist. He is best known for his book on the Dutch origins of New York City and The Island at the Center of the World.  Shorto’s research for the book relied greatly on the work of the New Netherland Project\, now known as the New Netherland Research Center\, as well as the New Netherland Institute. Shorto has been the New Netherland Institute’s Senior Scholar since 2013. In 2018\, Shorto was inducted in the New York Writers Hall of Fame. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Nevada Mayflower Society and the New Netherland Institute. Tickets for this plated breakfast are $30 per person. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nOne of Literary Hub’s Most Anticipated Books of 2025 The author of The Island at the Center of the World offers up a thrilling narrative of how New York―that brash\, bold\, archetypal city―came to be. \nIn 1664\, England decided to invade the Dutch-controlled city of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. Charles II and his brother\, the Duke of York\, had dreams of empire\, and their archrivals\, the Dutch\, were in the way. But Richard Nicolls\, the military officer who led the English flotilla bent on destruction\, changed his strategy once he encountered Peter Stuyvesant\, New Netherland’s canny director general. \nBristling with vibrant characters\, Taking Manhattan reveals the founding of New York to be an invention\, the result of creative negotiations that would blend the multiethnic\, capitalistic society of New Amsterdam with the power of the rising English empire. But the birth of what might be termed the first modern city is also a story of the brutal dispossession of Native Americans and of the roots of American slavery. The book draws from newly translated materials and illuminates neglected histories―of religious refugees\, Indigenous tribes\, and free and enslaved Africans. \nTaking Manhattan tells the riveting story of the birth of New York City as a center of capitalism and pluralism\, a foundation from which America would rise. It also shows how the paradox of New York’s origins―boundless opportunity coupled with subjugation and displacement―reflects America’s promise and failure to this day. Russell Shorto\, whose work has been described as “astonishing” (New York Times) and “literary alchemy” (Chicago Tribune)\, has once again mined archival sources to offer a vibrant tale and a fresh and trenchant argument about American beginnings.
