SUMMARY:The Dysfunction of Food: On Food That Isn’t Beautiful or Comforting or Delicious with Kim Foster
DESCRIPTION:Kim Foster\, James Beard Award-winning Author of the forthcoming The Meth Lunches: The Care and Feeding of a Drug Addict\, St. Martin’s Press. \nIn this lecture\, Kim Foster will examine the ways food can signify and complicate dysfunction in Las Vegas\, for both individuals and communities – those with empty tables\, and those with full plates. \nWhat does food mean to people in addiction? Or psychosis? Or in jail? Or for people who don’t have kitchens? What should it mean to the rest of us? \nMost of us think about food as a conduit for connection it’s a cliché now: “Food brings us together” and “Food connects us.” The messages are everywhere. A sea of perfectly constructed social media food images floods our feeds daily. It’s all beautiful\, heavily curated\, intentional\, and privileged. The people eating are happy\, smiling\, and having a ball. It’s a monoculture of food happiness. Foster is a contributor to this culture as a food writer. \nBut food is also a conduit for disconnection\, stress\, family trauma\, and workplace abuse. In families\, the table\, the eating together\, the passing of plates may hold discomfort\, anxiety\, and anger. It brings up things that can\, in other environments\, be let go. For others\, the table holds scarcity\, an annihilating reminder of their poverty. Others still have food on their table\, but no one sitting next to them to share it. \nFood can be a way to control. And punish. And abuse. And a means to force people to conform. And\, there is having no food at all. \nFood is often a litmus test. What we are eating and how we are eating tells us something integral about how we are doing\, and what our lives are like. \nCo-sponsored by the Black Mountain Institute.

SUMMARY:Their Divine Fires Book Launch with Wendy Chen

A captivating and intimate story interwoven with folktale and myth\, the book is shaped by love affairs of three generations of Chinese women across one hundred years of revolutions\, both political and personal. Drawing on the lives of her great-grandmother and her great-uncles—both of whom fought on the side of the Communists—as well as her mother’s experiences during the Cultural Revolution\, Dr. Chen infuses Their Divine Fires with a passion that will transport the reader back to powerful moments in history while bringing us close to the women who persisted despite the forces all around them. \nWendy Chen is also the author of the poetry collection UNEARTHINGS (Tavern Books). Her translations of Song-dynasty woman writer Li Qingzhao are forthcoming from Farrar\, Straus & Giroux in 2025 in a collection titled THE MAGPIE AT NIGHT. She is the recipient of prizes and fellowships from the Academy of American Poets\, MacDowell\, & elsewhere. Her writing has appeared widely in prestigious venues such as Freeman’s\, A Public Space\, & Mid-American Review. Her work has been translated into multiple languages and adapted into musical compositions. She has taught and spoken at colleges\, universities\, and arts organizations such as the Academy of American Poets\, Poets & Writers\, Poetry Foundation\, & Yale University.\nShe is the editor of Figure 1 and associate editor-in-chief of Tupelo Quarterly. SUMMARY:No Charity in the Wilderness - Reading by Shaun Griffin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading by Shaun Griffin\, Nevada’s Poet Laureate\, from his new book of poems\, No Charity in the Wilderness. \nNo Charity in the Wilderness is a long journey into the new American West. From the southern border to the isolating two-lane highways in the desert\, this collection is a prayer of reconciliation with so much that troubles us … \n“No Charity in the Wilderness should loft Griffin’s literary reputation into company with William Stafford\, Gary Snyder\, and Annie Dillard\, as he is clearly one of the most powerful and spiritual voices of the new American West and beyond. These new poems are a conscience for our world.”\n—Douglas Unger\, author of Leaving the Land and Voices from Silence

SUMMARY:Fall 2024 Poetry Workshops at the Left of Center Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Calling all beginning and advanced poets! \nJoin Left of Center and the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas for three free poetry workshops designed to engage both beginning and experienced writers in “ekphrastic poetry.” Ekphrastic poems are written in response to works of visual art\, and these three workshops will utilize Left of Center’s collections to help writers generate original poetry. \nPlease note: you will receive an email confirming that you have a spot in one\, two\, or all three workshops\, depending on available space. Please also note that the African Art Museum inside the Left of Center Art Gallery is only accessible by stairs. \nRead the descriptions below for each of the workshops\, then let us know which you’d like to attend. Please only sign up for those you can commit to\, as space is limited\, and we want to be sure everyone gets a chance! \n\nWorkshop 1 – Saturday\, Sept. 14\, 2024\, 1-3 p.m. – Join writer JM Huck for a multi-genre workshop experience utilizing visual art\, music\, and group discussion towards generating poetry. Writers will engage in guided conversation ahead of dedicated writing time towards creating their own original works.\nWorkshop 2 – Saturday\, Oct. 12\, 2024\,  1-3 p.m. – Join writer Sada Malumfashi to view Left of Center’s African Museum as a means of inspiration for your writing. Participants will practice ways to extend the visual language of a work of art into poetry. What does it mean to really look at art? What are the politics of looking? How can words help us to see?\nWorkshop 3 – Saturday\, Nov. 16\, 2024\, 1-3 p.m. – Join writer Lauren Gleave in the African Art Museum inside Left of Center Art Gallery. There\, writers will explore the work on display and generate ideas for poetic language inspired by their interactions with the art\, their movement through the space\, and the emotions that surround that experience of communing with visual art pieces. The workshop will then provide dedicated writing time and feedback for each writer from their peers.
