SUMMARY:"The Traveler" Creative Aging Writing & Storytelling Session
DESCRIPTION:“The Traveler” Creative Aging Writing & Storytelling Workshops\n\n\n\nTravel is wherever your mind takes you and memories await you!\n\n\n\nThe best way to memorialize your travels through life is to write about them and/or talk about them. In this fun\, interactive writing and storytelling workshop for older adults\, you’ll have the opportunity to do both.\n\n\n\nJoin Nevada Arts Council and Lifetime Arts teaching artist\, Joylynn M. Ross\, and your fellow Nevadans or drop-in visitors for 90 minutes of reliving and retelling a moment worth writing and talking about.\n\nThe focus and theme is a moment from one of your past travels. If you need help unearthing one of those experiences\, don’t worry. There will be plenty of hands-on assistance and engaging prompts provided to you by your instructor and your peers … because in this workshop\, each participant is both the student and the teacher. No one will have to travel this writing and storytelling journey alone!\n\n\n\nAnd keep in mind that traveling doesn’t have to be in a plane\, train\, boat\, or automobile across the map. It can be a mind traveling experience to a make-believe world\, or traveling from one side of town to another\, to a local event or one far\, far away. Again\, travel is wherever your mind takes you . . . even if it’s simply traveling back in time to recall a moment from your past.\n\n\nRoss will be presenting four Creative Aging older adult writing and storytelling sessions at various Las-Vegas Clark County Library District branches throughout the summer for the 55+ community. If in the Las Vegas\, Nevada area\, feel free to drop in for any or all of the following sessions that are FREE for you to attend:\n\n\n\n“The Traveler” Writing & Storytelling Workshop for the 55+ Community\n\n\n\n\nJuly 11 (Friday)\nCentennial Hills Library\n6711 N. SUMMARY:Breakfast Event Featuring Russell Shorto Author of "Taking Manhattan"
DESCRIPTION:A Special Breakfast event at The Suncoast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas featuring Russell Shorto\, author of a new book “Taking Manhattan”. \nAmerican Heritage Partners is honored to present a Zoom talk by Russell Shorto\, an author\, historian\, and journalist. He is best known for his book on the Dutch origins of New York City and The Island at the Center of the World.  Shorto’s research for the book relied greatly on the work of the New Netherland Project\, now known as the New Netherland Research Center\, as well as the New Netherland Institute. Shorto has been the New Netherland Institute’s Senior Scholar since 2013. In 2018\, Shorto was inducted in the New York Writers Hall of Fame. \nThis event is co-sponsored by the Nevada Mayflower Society and the New Netherland Institute. Tickets for this plated breakfast are $30 per person. \nABOUT THE BOOK:\nOne of Literary Hub’s Most Anticipated Books of 2025 The author of The Island at the Center of the World offers up a thrilling narrative of how New York―that brash\, bold\, archetypal city―came to be. \nIn 1664\, England decided to invade the Dutch-controlled city of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. Charles II and his brother\, the Duke of York\, had dreams of empire\, and their archrivals\, the Dutch\, were in the way. But Richard Nicolls\, the military officer who led the English flotilla bent on destruction\, changed his strategy once he encountered Peter Stuyvesant\, New Netherland’s canny director general. \nBristling with vibrant characters\, Taking Manhattan reveals the founding of New York to be an invention\, the result of creative negotiations that would blend the multiethnic\, capitalistic society of New Amsterdam with the power of the rising English empire. But the birth of what might be termed the first modern city is also a story of the brutal dispossession of Native Americans and of the roots of American slavery. The book draws from newly translated materials and illuminates neglected histories―of religious refugees\, Indigenous tribes\, and free and enslaved Africans. \nTaking Manhattan tells the riveting story of the birth of New York City as a center of capitalism and pluralism\, a foundation from which America would rise. It also shows how the paradox of New York’s origins―boundless opportunity coupled with subjugation and displacement―reflects America’s promise and failure to this day. Russell Shorto\, whose work has been described as “astonishing” (New York Times) and “literary alchemy” (Chicago Tribune)\, has once again mined archival sources to offer a vibrant tale and a fresh and trenchant argument about American beginnings.

SUMMARY:A Conversation with Jill Derby
DESCRIPTION:In 1973\, a radical choice that Jill Derby made while under pressure changed the trajectory of her career from a potential profession in academia to that of a lifelong political activist. When You Dare to Say Yes is a decades-spanning account of how a conservative and conventional upbringing\, which began in rural Nevada\, evolved into progressive political activism that influenced the course of the state’s education system and advanced women’s gender equality in public life. Derby’s account of the awakening of her post-college experience living abroad and stories of her global travels infuse this memoir with an international perspective and entertaining vignettes. Ultimately\, Derby shares her personal understanding of the transformative power of living among different cultures.
