DESCRIPTION:Adult Pottery \nExplore the world of clay over a period of 6 weeks\, using a variety of hand-building techniques. The first 4 weeks will focus on creating pottery pieces\, the 5th week will be used for glazing those pieces\, and the 6th week will offer a chance at trying out the pottery wheels. SUMMARY:What the Desert Already Has\, Exhibit by Jen Urso
DESCRIPTION:What the Desert Already Has\, 2023\nJen Urso\nPerformance\, soil from Mormon Mesa (Michael Heizer’s “Double Negative”)\, recycled Plexiglas\, lights\, digitally printed poster \n“What the Desert Already Has” focuses on the small\, time-consuming effort of life in the desert\, from seed to plant. This piece uses soil harvested from Mormon Mesa\, where Michael Heizer created “Double Negative.” The soil was placed in two 1/120 scale trenches\, which is irrigated and lit with grow lights to encourage dormant seeds to grow. Intended as a long-term\, slow performance\, this piece focuses on the small\, persistent efforts of abundant desert life\, contrasted with the large\, destructive bulldozing and mark-making of 1960s/70s land artists like Heizer. The accompanying Mormon Mesa botanical poster situated between the two Plexiglas trenches features plants found by the artist and citizen scientists on iNaturalist with information on known ethnobotanical uses. \nThis temporary exhibit will run from July 12 through Oct 20\, 2023\, in the 1981 gallery.

DESCRIPTION:𝐻𝒾𝒿𝒶/𝑒/𝑜/𝓍(𝓈) 𝒹𝑒 𝒮𝓊–\, a group exhibition curated by Cesar Piedra (@ylasllaves) and Geovany Uranda (@vaqueronopalero) in collaboration with the Holland Project (@hpgalleries) and Nuwu Art Gallery + Community Center (@nuwuart). This exhibition connects artists and their work to the nostalgia behind the phrase “hija/o de tu madre.” Through that phrase\, the artists examine their practice and reflect on childhood and the cultural expectations of living in a latina/e/o/x household. 𝐻𝒾𝒿𝒶/𝑒/𝑜/𝓍(𝓈) 𝒹𝑒 𝒮𝓊– explores joy\, rebellion\, tragedy\, mischief\, and the feeling of “IYKYK” (if you know\, you know). And if you don’t\, come anyway. \nWe’re also excited that this exhibition bridges together artists from both Reno and Las Vegas\, and we will be able to exhibit this show in both cities thanks to the amazing collaborations we have created with the Holland Project and Nuwu Art Gallery + Community Center. A big part of the Scrambled Eggs mission is to continue the work of establishing artistic permanece in Nevada\, which means strengthening the connection between artists and art communities across the state. DESCRIPTION:Reno\, NV – The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Learning to be Lost\,” a solo exhibition by 2022-23 Reno City Artist Rossitza Todorova. The show will run from June 19 to August 4\, 2023\, and will showcase new paintings by Todorova that embrace the metaphorical concept of being lost within the desert landscape. \nThe artist reception will take place on Thursday\, July 13\, 2023\, from 5 – 7 p.m.\, and visitors will have a chance to engage with Todorova and learn more about her work. Admission to the exhibition is free\, making it accessible to all community members. \nRossitza Todorova\, a professional artist and Professor of Art at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno\, Nevada\, has an interesting artistic journey that began when she emigrated from Sofia\, Bulgaria\, to Reno\, Nevada\, during her childhood. It was amidst the desert landscape that Todorova’s passion for this awe-inspiring environment was ignited\, guiding the core of her artistic expression. \nIn her art\, Todorova delves into the intricate interplay between the passage of time\, space\, and the intricate tapestry of memory. Her paintings are influenced by the Great Basin and the dynamic boom-and-bust built environment of the West\, blending elements of landscape and geometry. In her work\, Todorova blurs the boundaries between representation and abstraction. \n“In this exhibition\, I use the desert landscape as a metaphor for navigating life’s uncertainties. I invite viewers to contemplate their own paths\, acknowledging the moments when goals and reality may diverge. DESCRIPTION:Emerge 2023 spotlights the works of four up-and-coming young artists from Northern Nevada who are all active participants in the arts community at the Holland Project. Abbay Anderson\, Nic Blauth\, Ruby Burge\, and Olivia Mier have all taken part in our Work In Progress art program and have contributed artwork to multiple Young Blood exhibitions at the Holland Project. We have had the great privilege of seeing their work grow and evolve over the past few years and it is exciting to witness them define their aesthetic and voice as artists. We are thrilled to be able to share their work in the McKinley Gallery and we can’t wait to see what is next on the horizon for each of these talented young artists. \nThe Holland Project is an all-ages arts and music initiative by young people\, for young people\, in the Truckee Meadows. Holland is non-profit\, volunteer-driven organization that produces more than 250 all-ages events annually in the Reno area. Governed by its members\, volunteer boards and our committees\, Holland seeks to propel Reno’s all-ages movement\, and wholeheartedly support and champion opportunities for young people in our community. \nHolland Project hopes to further identify Reno as a cultural center with a vibrant urban scene where art and music thrive. Holland fundamentally believes that music and art are vital forces\, and that young people have the ability and right to shape and share their culture. DESCRIPTION:City of Reno City Hall \nMetro Gallery\nAugust 14 – October 6\, 2023 \nReception\, Thursday\, September 28\, from 5 – 7 p.m. \nReno\, NV– The City of Reno presents the NTI-Traveling Exhibition\, Meaning is always here. I started the curation of Meaning is Always Here by trying to imagine a persona the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art might present to Nevadans that live far away and cannot reach us. We at the Museum think we have a good sense of who we are\, but how do others perceive us? We shift. Our exhibitions change. Therefore\, this exhibition should show that change with artists from different backgrounds and media. The works should reference the real world and represent a transformation through the artists’ decisions\, so that we can see where they’re coming from. \nMeaning is always here…I think about the artworks that couldn’t be included in this traveling show for reasons of size or fragility. That artwork awaits you here\, at the Barrick Museum of Art. Visit us and see. \nExhibition artists include: Alexander Calder\, Candice Lin\, Chase R. SUMMARY:Reflections Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Reflections are concepts of perception and introspection. Many Mesoamerican cultures used obsidian to create reflective portals\, black mirrors\, into other worlds. Diving further into the esoteric\, the mirror has also brought a lot of anxiety and superstition through beliefs such as demons trapped behind its surface and the childhood game\, Bloody Mary. Vanity is another word that comes to mind when thinking of our reflections. You can see that in the tragedy of Narcissus falling in love with his own image and the clash of European industries in a race to perfect the looking glass due to popular demand. All in all\, our mirror images both allure and terrify us. We invite you to explore these dichotomies through the exhibiting artists’ work\, depicting and exploring the fantastical world of reflections! \nReception: September 30\, 2023 5:30pm-7:30pm. \nJuror \nMikayla Whitmore is an artist and photojournalist working within the vast realms of photography\, sculpture\, and activism. In conversation with landscape\, they utilize concepts of space & existentialism to convey their observations with the romanticization of the West\, queer experience\, and the appreciation of the sublime in the often mundane. Growing up in Las Vegas\, and after obtaining their Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, in 2010\, they have exhibited work nationally and internationally. A recent project includes the upcoming Live in America Performing Arts Festival at the Momentary Museum in Bentonville\, Arkansas. Their work can be found in various media\, including The New Yorker\, Vanity Fair\, The Wall Street Journal\, ESPN\, and High Country News. Mikayla is a member of Women Photograph\, a non-profit to elevate the voices of women and nonbinary visual journalists\, and a collaborator of the Mystery Ranch\, an art and ecology research station located near Searchlight\, Nevada.

SUMMARY:Artifacts of Introspection\, An Exhibition of Paintings by Joanna Drakos
DESCRIPTION:Joanna Drakos will be exhibiting her latest painting series\, “Artifacts of Introspection\,” at Sierra Arts Foundation Riverside Gallery\, in downtown Reno\, Nevada\, September 7-30\, 2023.  There will be an artist reception September 23\, 2023\, from 12 noon to 4:00 pm. \nA brief statement from the artist: “One year ago\, at the apex of summer heat\, I had the misfortune of suffering a heat-related illness. My recovery was slow\, and it began to affect my state of mind. All the while\, compounded by the unrelenting intensity of the extreme temperatures that affected my ability to perform daily tasks. I continued to paint in the refuge of my studio where I fantasized about escaping to a place of coolness\, comfort\, and hope. Using my painting practice to transport me\, I created the concept of Winter’s Realm as an antidote to the one-hundred degree temperatures outside. As the project progressed through the seasons\, my exploration of this escapist world took unexpected twists and turns. I emerged from a cool place\, through sunsets and solstices and entered the enveloping rich textures of a birch forest. The paintings traversed a path of escape and catharsis as the color palette and painting techniques evolved and shifted. The resulting series of paintings are best described as my Artifacts of Introspection. \nI paint my abstract canvases in an intuitive style that follows an intention that I’ve set for myself. I use various sensory input for artistic inspiration: music\, scent\, color\, atmospheric mood\, and inward mental explorations; what I like to call “falling down the rabbit hole” of thought. This is all a part of the therapeutic benefit I derive from painting. My anxious anticipation of the next summer and the next\, as temperatures continue an upward trajectory\, is not something I look forward to; but through painting\, I’ve found a way to cope. \nThis project is funded through a grant by the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The local event is part of the 2023 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. The exhibition will run from August 21 – October 13\, 2023 in McKinley Arts and Culture Center\, Gallery East and West. Media are invited to cover the exhibition and attend the artists’ reception on September 7 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \n  \nVA medical facilities incorporate creative arts into their therapy programs to further the rehabilitation goals for both inpatients and outpatients. DESCRIPTION:The College of Southern Nevada\, School of Arts and Letters\, Department of Fine Arts and Art Gallery Program would like to invite you to engage with artist and North Central College Assistant Professor of Art\, Whitney Sage this Thursday\, September 28 at 6pm as she participates in a special Preview\, Artist Talk\, and Opening Reception with refreshments in conjunction with her Artspace Gallery Exhibition\, Homesickness: On Longing and Loss. Homesickness: On Longing and Loss is on display now and will run through Saturday\, December 2\, 2023\, in the Artspace Gallery on the North Las Vegas Campus of the College of Southern Nevada. \nWhitney Sage earned her Bachelor’s degrees in Art Education and Painting from Miami University in Oxford\, Ohio and her M.F.A. in Studio Art from the Sam Fox School of Visual Art at Washington University in St. Louis. Her work\, which includes practices of painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, fibers and installation\, has previously been featured in solo exhibitions at Buckham Gallery\, Indiana University East\, Pump House Arts Center\, Workhouse Arts Center\, Art Reach Mid-Michigan\, ROY G BIV and Ripon College. A selection of Sage’s recent work has been featured in notable group exhibitions at UICA\, the Painting Center\, Superfront LA Gallery\, the Lexington Art League\, the Muskegon Museum of Art\, the Kennedy Art Museum and the Dennos Museum Center. Sage has been an artist-in-residence at the Vermont Studio Center\, Studios Midwest\, AIR Studio Paducah\, Wave Pool\, Millimetre Press and Popp’s Packing. Her creative work has been featured in a number of publications including Manifest Gallery’s INDA 14\, Refract Journal\, Hour Detroit Magazine\, WomanArts Quarterly Journal\, Newfound Journal\, Maake Magazine\, and the Post-Industrial Complex catalog\, published by the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit as a survey of makers in the Detroit area. \nWhen discussing her work\, Sage asserts\, “Homesickness: On Longing and Loss\, focuses its lens on the sprawling neighborhoods of Detroit and Highland Park\, Michigan. Stylistically modeled after tintype photography\, the work co-opts the visual iconography and traditions of landscape for its ability to reflect the larger cultural ideals and shifts of its time. Having grown up in suburban Detroit\, I’ve witnessed first-hand the region’s bellwether relevance to the ways our nation’s post-industrial economy\, geographic sprawl and affinity for consumption continues to leave behind communities in its wake. Through the depiction of failing or absent architecture\, the works address the many challenges facing urban and rural communities nationwide: the availability of safe\, affordable housing\, the maintenance of stable and dense neighborhoods\, and the disappearance of recognizable homeland and along with it\, the erasure of communal and familial histories.” \nThe CSN Artspace Gallery is free\, family friendly\, and open to the public. Gallery hours are from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
