SUMMARY:Artifacts of Introspection\, An Exhibition of Paintings by Joanna Drakos
DESCRIPTION:Joanna Drakos will be exhibiting her latest painting series\, “Artifacts of Introspection\,” at Sierra Arts Foundation Riverside Gallery\, in downtown Reno\, Nevada\, September 7-30\, 2023.  There will be an artist reception September 23\, 2023\, from 12 noon to 4:00 pm. \nA brief statement from the artist: “One year ago\, at the apex of summer heat\, I had the misfortune of suffering a heat-related illness. My recovery was slow\, and it began to affect my state of mind. All the while\, compounded by the unrelenting intensity of the extreme temperatures that affected my ability to perform daily tasks. I continued to paint in the refuge of my studio where I fantasized about escaping to a place of coolness\, comfort\, and hope. Using my painting practice to transport me\, I created the concept of Winter’s Realm as an antidote to the one-hundred degree temperatures outside. As the project progressed through the seasons\, my exploration of this escapist world took unexpected twists and turns. I emerged from a cool place\, through sunsets and solstices and entered the enveloping rich textures of a birch forest. The paintings traversed a path of escape and catharsis as the color palette and painting techniques evolved and shifted. The resulting series of paintings are best described as my Artifacts of Introspection. \nI paint my abstract canvases in an intuitive style that follows an intention that I’ve set for myself. I use various sensory input for artistic inspiration: music\, scent\, color\, atmospheric mood\, and inward mental explorations; what I like to call “falling down the rabbit hole” of thought. This is all a part of the therapeutic benefit I derive from painting. My anxious anticipation of the next summer and the next\, as temperatures continue an upward trajectory\, is not something I look forward to; but through painting\, I’ve found a way to cope. \nThis project is funded through a grant by the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

DESCRIPTION:McKinley Arts & Culture Center \nGallery East & West \nAugust 21 – October 13\, 2023 \nReception September 7\, 5:00 – 7:00pm \n  \nReno\, NV –VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System and the City of Reno’s Arts and Culture Division have teamed up to offer veterans a chance to demonstrate their artistic talents in the visual arts at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center\, Gallery East and West. The local event is part of the 2023 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. The exhibition will run from August 21 – October 13\, 2023 in McKinley Arts and Culture Center\, Gallery East and West. Media are invited to cover the exhibition and attend the artists’ reception on September 7 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \n  \nVA medical facilities incorporate creative arts into their therapy programs to further the rehabilitation goals for both inpatients and outpatients. This annual competition recognizes the progress and recovery made through that therapy and raises the visibility of the creative achievements of Veterans. Her work\, which includes practices of painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, fibers and installation\, has previously been featured in solo exhibitions at Buckham Gallery\, Indiana University East\, Pump House Arts Center\, Workhouse Arts Center\, Art Reach Mid-Michigan\, ROY G BIV and Ripon College. A selection of Sage’s recent work has been featured in notable group exhibitions at UICA\, the Painting Center\, Superfront LA Gallery\, the Lexington Art League\, the Muskegon Museum of Art\, the Kennedy Art Museum and the Dennos Museum Center. Sage has been an artist-in-residence at the Vermont Studio Center\, Studios Midwest\, AIR Studio Paducah\, Wave Pool\, Millimetre Press and Popp’s Packing. Her creative work has been featured in a number of publications including Manifest Gallery’s INDA 14\, Refract Journal\, Hour Detroit Magazine\, WomanArts Quarterly Journal\, Newfound Journal\, Maake Magazine\, and the Post-Industrial Complex catalog\, published by the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit as a survey of makers in the Detroit area. \nWhen discussing her work\, Sage asserts\, “Homesickness: On Longing and Loss\, focuses its lens on the sprawling neighborhoods of Detroit and Highland Park\, Michigan. Stylistically modeled after tintype photography\, the work co-opts the visual iconography and traditions of landscape for its ability to reflect the larger cultural ideals and shifts of its time. Having grown up in suburban Detroit\, I’ve witnessed first-hand the region’s bellwether relevance to the ways our nation’s post-industrial economy\, geographic sprawl and affinity for consumption continues to leave behind communities in its wake. Through the depiction of failing or absent architecture\, the works address the many challenges facing urban and rural communities nationwide: the availability of safe\, affordable housing\, the maintenance of stable and dense neighborhoods\, and the disappearance of recognizable homeland and along with it\, the erasure of communal and familial histories.” \nThe CSN Artspace Gallery is free\, family friendly\, and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:Award winning watercolor painter Colleen Reynolds will share her successful approach to plein air painting October 8th\, from 9am-3pm in Carson City.  This is an outdoor workshop. \nDescription: Participants will meet Colleen at a chosen local downtown Carson City site for a 1-2 hour plein air demonstration.  Participants will then choose a location to paint and Colleen will individually advise each person focusing on values\, composition\, and technique.  The workshop will wrap up at Colleen’s studio with a group critique. DESCRIPTION:Join us and Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick next Wednesday\, November 1st from 5 PM to 7 PM for the dedication of “Earth Rise\,” a public art sculpture by Mark Brandvik. \nLocation:\nMoapa Valley Community Center\n320 N. Moapa Valley Boulevard\nOverton\, Nevada 89040 \n“Earth Rise” by Mark Brandvik serves as a gateway to Michael Heizer’s renowned land art piece\, “Double Negative\,” located 8 miles east of the Moapa Valley Community Center. The sculpture’s captivating composition of steel forms pays homage to Heizer’s groundbreaking work\, reflecting the forces of excavation and erosion. It also draws inspiration from the nearby landscape’s landforms and archaeology\, while celebrating the American spirit of discovery from the Space Age. \nThe Moapa Valley Community played an invaluable role in the creation of “Double Negative”. Now\, over 50 years later “Earth Rise”\, the sculpture is a tribute to their contribution. Situated on the property of the Moapa Valley Community Center\, the artwork features subtle glyphs etched into the weathered steel\, honoring the Valley and its people who have warmly welcomed art enthusiasts from around the world for over half a century. \nMark Brandvik\, a native of Las Vegas\, has a BFA from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, Brandvik has received numerous grants\, commissions\, and residencies for his art. His work has been exhibited extensively across the United States\, Canada\, and Europe. In addition to his art practice\, Brandvik has been teaching studio art since 1997 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, and the College of Southern Nevada. DESCRIPTION:“On Instinct” is an exhibition of new work by Reno-based artist Ashley Gottlieb. The exhibition will run from November 4 to December 31\, 2023 at the South Valleys Library Art Gallery in Reno\, NV. \nThe public is invited to an artist reception on Wednesday\, November 15 from 5:30-6:30 pm at the South Valleys Library. \nLearn more at the show at https://www.ashleygottlieb.com/portfolio-1/oninstinct \nContact the artist with inquires at hello@ashleygottlieb.com \nArtist Statement for “On Instinct”: \n“On Instinct” is a collection of artworks developed using an automatic drawing technique that allows my primal urge to create freewheeling\, nonsensical shapes to run wild\, all while continuing to take a thoughtful approach to uncover the composition’s balance through color. What results is a personal journey of instinctual shape-making combined with audacious color palettes\, forming unexpected and energetic arrangements. \nThis series emerged as a response to frustration within the initial stages of my creative process for my next series. I had been grappling with a self-imposed expectation that my work needed more polish or less “strangeness\,” which only led to creative pressure and overthinking every decision. This led to a painful sketching process and rather boring compositions. I decided to stop forcing square pegs into round holes and instead followed my gut to sketch something from a natural state of flow. What transpired was exhilarating – playfulness\, movement\, energy\, and an elusive balance among the diverse shapes\, all while suggesting a hint of instability. These traits\, in conjunction with color\, remain at the heart of my ongoing artistic exploration and ignite my inner creativity. \nIn addition to my exploration of shape\, balance and color\, I aim to transport the viewer to an alternate realm\, one that is uniquely personal to each individual. While I have no specific realm in mind\, I envision it as a joyful and playful space. In many ways\, the artworks in “On Instinct” serve as psychological association tests. I invite you to embark on a personal journey when viewing each piece. Where does it take you? What do you see? Don’t overthink it. Just go with your instinct.

This is a mockumentary-style series that follows the antics of a serial killer. Audiences may catch up on the first four episodes by visiting https://www.storyled.com/serial-confessions. At the screening we will get to experience the exciting\, hilarious and sometimes gruesome\, 2-part series finale. This is a finale people will definitely be talking about! \nWAIT was a short film finalist in Reno’s very own Cordillera International Film Festival for Best Nevada Film. It was also just screened at the famous Chinese Theatre in Hollywood as an official selection of the Silicon Beach Film Festival. It is a powerful coming-of-age story that follows a girl and her dad\, from innocence to one heartbreaking turning point. Coming from a multi-disciplinary and non-traditional art background\, Megan is interested in innovative ways to activate public space and create opportunities for citizens and artists to engage with the community and connect people to their environment. Her personal practice is centered around place and the psychological experience of the environment. Megan holds an MFA from the University of Iowa in Intermedia. She is currently the Arts & Culture Manager for the City of Reno. \n  \n  \n \nMickey Sprott\, Cultural Supervisor\, Clark County\, Nevada \nMickey Sprott is the cultural program supervisor for public art at Clark County\, Nevada in the Department of Parks and Recreation. Ms. Sprott manages the Public Art Office focused on creating large scale public art in both rural and urban settings\, education for the professional artist\, youth education\, operates two galleries and oversees the conservation of the collection.  Ms. Sprott holds a master’s degree in public administration and a bachelor’s degree in art with a minor in art history. She is a member of the Americans for the Arts\, served on the City of Las Vegas Arts Commission as Chair in 2021-2022 and was the project manager for the 1 October Memorial Committee and winning concept design from JCJ Architecture\, the Forever One Memorial. The County Arts Plan was established in 2013 using the percent for the arts model.

SUMMARY:Visiting Artist Lecture: Abigail Lucien
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibit “Toward a Tangled Turn: Knots\, Nets\, Threads\, & Loops” at currently open in Sheppard Contemporary at UNR\, the Department of Art\, Art History\, & Design is pleased to welcome Visiting Artist Abigail Lucien to give a free and public lecture on her work. \nAbigail Lucien is a Haitian-American interdisciplinary artist whose work addresses themes of (be)longing\, futurity\, myth\, and place by considering our relationship to inherited colonial structures and systems of belief/care. Working across sculpture\, literature\, and time-based media\, Lucien’s practice is auto-ethnographic: referencing found objects and familiar surroundings as a way to implicate the body’s relationship to material and place—interpreting concepts such as loss\, love\, and grief as a fluid procession rather than a state to reach or become. \nLucien received the 2023 Sondheim Award\, was named to the 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 list\, is a recipient of a 2023 Ruby’s Award\, 2021 VMFA Fellowship and the 2020 Harpo Emerging Artist Fellowship. Past exhibitions include SculptureCenter (NY)\, MoMA PS1 (NY)\, MAC Panamá (Panamá)\, Tiwani Contemporary (London)\, Atlanta Contemporary (Atlanta\, GA)\, Frost Art Museum (Miami\, FL)\, and The Fabric Workshop and Museum (Philadelphia\, PA). Residencies include Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture (Madison\, ME)\, Amant Studio & Research Residency (NY)\, the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts (Wrocław\, Poland)\, The Luminary (St. Louis\, MO)\, Santa Fe Art Institute (Santa Fe\, NM)\, ACRE (Steuben\, WI)\, and Ox-Bow School of Art & Artist Residency (Saugatuck\, MI). \nLucien is currently based between Baltimore\, MD and Brooklyn\, NY and teaches as an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at Hunter College in NYC.

SUMMARY:"Toward a Tangled Turn: Knots\, Nets\, Threads\, & Loops" Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Closing Reception and Gallery Viewing of Exhibition. \nSpecial Event Parking available in Whalen Parking Garage. \nLoosely and carefully woven together\, this group art exhibition curated by Austin Pratt features a wide-ranging collection of artworks that point or speak to the ideas of ‘knots\, nets\, threads\, & loops’. This open and poetic meditation on form (physical or otherwise)\, invites reflection on paradox\, ambiguity\, mystery\, and metaphor. From avant-garde electronic noise music through to traditional indigenous woven and beaded baskets; from archival collection of global folk games and narrative devices to contemporary painting and sculpture\, this exhibition examines these guiding and tangled forms in many possible ways: as intellectual curiosities\, mental models or frames\, mathematic diagram\, functional and material tools\, or totemic magical and spiritual objects\, each discrete but non-trivial. Many of these themes and threads here approach analytic concepts and questions from the field of topology\, a branch of pure mathematics. In topology\, geometric forms such as knots and loops are studied and questioned by how they react to various changes. Despite warping\, bending\, twisting\, and stretching\, some properties of geometric objects do not depend on their exact shape\, but how they are put together\, and what is preserved. An object such as the Mobius Strip – a simple\, twisted band\, becomes an infinite single-sided loop\, and serves as an indicative example of a topological curiosity. Knots\, in their numerous spatial complexities\, are another. Walking a more poetic path\, the forms of ‘knots\, nets\, threads & loops’ can be understood through a metaphoric or archetypal perspective. The Buddhist metaphor of life’s Endless Knot\, unifying wisdom and compassion\, or the ancient concept of Eternal Return\, both question the possible recurring and cyclical looping concept of life and time. The psychological and cultural character of the trickster\, throughout world traditions\, resonates metaphorically in roads\, paths\, journeys\, crossroads\, and other in-between sites\, serving as an emblem of sacred messenger\, writer\, boundary-crosser\, rule-breaker\, genius and fool. Mythic characters such as Hermes\, Mercury\, Eshu\, Coyote\, and Bugs Bunny inhabit this tricky place\, finding salience in the twisting journey of a road or labyrinth\, or in the intersecting points in a net or network; crossing boundaries\, breaking rules\, or delivering important messages\, for worse or for better. Toward a Tangled Turn is equal parts mathematic precision and fuzzy dream\, ruminating on questions of mind\, matter\, space\, and time. As part of University Galleries’ mission to serve as an educational and community hub\, this semester-long exhibition invites students and faculty to engage with the themes or artworks in the show in their own coursework as a way to form dialogue among various disciplines. Faculty are invited to visit the exhibit with their classes\, or use the gallery to create prompts for writing projects\, studio work\, or discussions. As an example\, this Fall\, UNR Professor of Mathematics Stanislav Jabuka will be teaching the first-ever course on Knot Theory at UNR. Throughout the semester\, University Galleries’ will be hosting the Visiting Artists & Scholars Lecture Series\, several of which are directly related to the exhibition. In the spirit of this interdisciplinary engagement\, on October 12\, there will be a panel discussion between UNR Professor of Mathematics Christopher Herald and exhibiting visiting artist Julian Hoeber.

SUMMARY:Elaine Parks: Fossils and Bones
DESCRIPTION:Fossils and Bones is a series of ceramic sculptures intended as a reflection on the desert walk where one encounters remains—bones of long dead animals and relics of the past. Desert finds are special and rare and highlight the desire to establish origin and story. The artworks are invented forms created to resemble familiar found bones that defy actual recognition. The exhibition offers a contrasting view of the idea that the desert is an empty\, desolate place\, that instead it is a rich and varied environment if we take the time to look. \nFossils and Bones\, runs from Novemeber 4 through January 14\, 2024. \n \n

SUMMARY:Nuwu Art Collective: Bridges
DESCRIPTION:The Bridges exhibition consists of Nuwu Art Collective artists Juan Cuevas (Quetzal Visions)\, Xochil Xitlalli (Xochil Art)\, Sol Martinez\, Brent Holmes\, Ashanti McGee\, Fawn Douglas\, Avis Charley\, and Danger Villao. Each of these exhibiting artists responds to the theme of building bridges in the community through art and materiality. \nThe Nuwu Art + Activism Center is a POC-owned and operated space in Las Vegas\, Nevada\, that works to uplift all communities through strengthening cultural knowledge and identity through the arts\, activism\, and education. They advocate for the equity of our respective and collective communities through an ongoing process of decolonization and celebration of our rich cultural heritages. \n\n\nOn exhibit at West Las Vegas Library from November 2\, 2023 through January 16\, 2024
