SUMMARY:Queer Monuments
DESCRIPTION:Clark County Public Arts is proud to present Queer Monuments juried by Emily Budd. \nQueer Monuments challenges the classical masculine and cultish notions of monuments and provides a platform for ephemeral and anti-monumental alternatives. Monuments are popularly seen as works of art that share the stories of people\, convey societal values\, and remind us of people’s lived histories; they are objects of remembrance. Anti-monuments take these basic premises and reappropriate them to tell the resilient stories of LGBTQIA+ people. The artists in this exhibition present personal monuments to the queerness in their lives. \nSculptor Emily Budd will lead as the exhibition’s juror\, infusing her expertise and passion into the selection process. Budd’s sculptural practice\, driven by the pursuit of queer futurity and place-making\, has garnered acclaim for its transformative narratives. Her project\, Memorial for Queer Rhyolite\, stands as a poignant tribute to an era marked by the AIDS epidemic\, capturing the essence of Nevada’s queer utopian spirit. Budd’s groundbreaking work has been featured in respected publications such as The Washington Post and showcased on Discovery Channel’s Mysteries of the Abandoned: Hidden America. \nExhibition Dates: Tuesday\, June 11\, 2024\, through Thursday\, July 25\, 2024 \nReception Event: Thursday\, July 25\, 2024\, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. \nLocation: Winchester-Dondero Community Center is located at 3130 McLeod Drive\, Las Vegas NV 89121. The center is open Tuesday–Saturday\, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and closed Sunday and Monday. \nFor more information\, please visit: https://tinyurl.com/ccpublicarts or contact the Clark County Public Art Office at CCPublicArt@ClarkCountyNV.gov.

SUMMARY:Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Run: April 16 – Aug. 2\, 2024\nThalia Dondero Gallery\, CEB 2nd floorGlenn & Ande Christenson School of Education Building\nNevada State University1300 Nevada State DriveHenderson\, NV 89002\nM-F 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Closed on July 4\, 2024)Free Parking\n\nNevada State University’s Office for the Arts presents “Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press”\, featuring 34 broadsides produced at the Black Rock Press at the University of Nevada\, Reno using the letterpress process with handset type and relief plates. The printing was done on a Vandercook cylinder proofing press.\nSince it was founded by Kenneth J. Carpenter more than 40 years ago\, the Press has been dedicated to the practice and teaching of the arts and crafts associated with the creation of finely printed books. The Press now has a national reputation for its outstanding work and has become a living museum of traditional printing technology\, housing a variety of cabinets filled with metal type\, and a number of historically significant printing presses. Its centerpiece\, a gilded 1837 super-royal Columbian iron handpress\, is one of the finest examples of a nineteenth century iron handpress to be found anywhere in the country.\nLetterpress broadsides are created for numerous reasons\, frequently to honor a visiting writer at a campus event. The Press has produced broadsides to honor university residencies by U.S. poets laureate Robert Pinsky and Billy Collins. Several broadsides were printed in conjunction with a national poetry broadside competition held in the 1990s; winning poets received cash awards and had their poems printed as broadsides. In recent years\, broadsides have been produced for the Robert Laxalt Distinguished Writers Award\, presented annually by the university’s Reynolds School of Journalism. Each broadside features a quotation from the writings of Robert Laxalt\, one of Nevada’s finest writers. Most of the broadsides in this exhibit were designed and printed by Bob Blesse\, director of the Press. Others have also contributed\, including John Balkwill who was in residence as a book artist and printmaker at the Press during the mid-1990s. Former students assisted with the design\, production\, and illustration of the broadsides.\nBroadside writers include Marjorie Agosin\, Willis Barnstone\, Daniel Boorstin\, Andre Codrescu\, Billy Collins\, Hayden Curruth\, Carol V. SUMMARY:Reassembly Required
DESCRIPTION:The Clark County Public Art Office is pleased to announce our latest exhibition that delves into the themes of destruction and reconstruction\, where artists reassemble objects to tell poignant stories about loved ones and cherished memories. By reuniting treasured objects with the emotions they evoke\, these artists forge deeper connections with their subjects. Others explore the societal landscape\, crafting new futures and narratives from discarded elements. As we rebuild and reimagine\, we can forge new memories and communities but always remember there will be Reassembly Required. \nJeannie Hua serves as this exhibition’s juror. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an MFA in 2022 and has taught collage making at Ox-Bow School of Art for their Art in the Meadows Workshops. Her mixed medias and collages have been shown in New York City\, Chicago\, and Las Vegas. She has also participated in group exhibitions in galleries and museums in Nevada\, New York\, Illinois\, California\, Michigan\, Virginia\, Wisconsin\, Pennsylvania\, Utah\, Tennessee\, Oregon\, and Orquevaux in France. SUMMARY:Canceled: Sagebrush to Sandstone: Cyanotype Workshop with Megan Berner

SUMMARY:A Glimpse Back
DESCRIPTION:Carson City\, Nevada — Capital City Arts Initiative is delighted to present work by the late artist\, Robert Morrison\, in the “A Glimpse Back” exhibition. His work reflected an active and ongoing dialogue between both geometric and organic forces. \nCCAI’s exhibit will be in Western Nevada College’s Bristlecone Gallery\, 2201 W College Parkway\, Carson City from Sept. 18 – Dec. 11\, 2024. The gallery is open to the public\, Monday through Friday\, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. The artist’s reception will take place on Tuesday\, October 22\, 5 – 6:30 p.m. \nMorrison (1941 – 2018)\, created countless sculptures\, paintings\, and drawings during his lifetime. Late in his career\, his metal sculptures evolved to include sound. A major installation work was Tongues: The Half Life of Morphine (1986) presented by the Nevada Museum of Art as part of Robert Morrison: A Retrospective in 2004. Quoted from the museum’s catalog by the same title\, critic Jeff Kelley wrote: “As a sculptor\, he works with manufactured steel plate. As a performer\, he works with electronic and ambient sound. That he is and uses both suggests the degree to which neither\, alone\, defines his identity as an artist. Like an endless string of reflections\, that identity teeters on the edge of powerful dualities: abstraction and figuration\, masculine and feminine\, denial and expression\, mass communication and isolation\, silence and speech — maybe even father and son\, which\, if you are a man and an artist represents both the power and powerlessness of your own personality.” \nMorrison created and showed his art for over five decades in many group and one-person exhibitions locally and nationally\, including Los Angeles\, San Francisco\, Las Vegas\, Florida\, Texas\, and New York. He earned a bachelor’s degree from California State University\, Fresno\, a master’s degree from Stanford University\, and did post-graduate studies at the University of California\, Davis. Sculpture Magazine did a feature article on Morrison written by William L. Fox in its March 2005 edition. The National Endowment for the Arts awarded Morrison a Visual Arts Fellowship in 1990\, and the Nevada Arts Council awarded him Visual Arts Fellowships in 1990 and 1984.
