SUMMARY:Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Run: April 16 – Aug. 2\, 2024\nThalia Dondero Gallery\, CEB 2nd floorGlenn & Ande Christenson School of Education Building\nNevada State University1300 Nevada State DriveHenderson\, NV 89002\nM-F 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Closed on July 4\, 2024)Free Parking\n\nNevada State University’s Office for the Arts presents “Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press”\, featuring 34 broadsides produced at the Black Rock Press at the University of Nevada\, Reno using the letterpress process with handset type and relief plates. The printing was done on a Vandercook cylinder proofing press.\nSince it was founded by Kenneth J. Carpenter more than 40 years ago\, the Press has been dedicated to the practice and teaching of the arts and crafts associated with the creation of finely printed books. The Press now has a national reputation for its outstanding work and has become a living museum of traditional printing technology\, housing a variety of cabinets filled with metal type\, and a number of historically significant printing presses. Its centerpiece\, a gilded 1837 super-royal Columbian iron handpress\, is one of the finest examples of a nineteenth century iron handpress to be found anywhere in the country.\nLetterpress broadsides are created for numerous reasons\, frequently to honor a visiting writer at a campus event. The Press has produced broadsides to honor university residencies by U.S. poets laureate Robert Pinsky and Billy Collins. Several broadsides were printed in conjunction with a national poetry broadside competition held in the 1990s; winning poets received cash awards and had their poems printed as broadsides. In recent years\, broadsides have been produced for the Robert Laxalt Distinguished Writers Award\, presented annually by the university’s Reynolds School of Journalism. Each broadside features a quotation from the writings of Robert Laxalt\, one of Nevada’s finest writers. Most of the broadsides in this exhibit were designed and printed by Bob Blesse\, director of the Press. Others have also contributed\, including John Balkwill who was in residence as a book artist and printmaker at the Press during the mid-1990s. Former students assisted with the design\, production\, and illustration of the broadsides.\nBroadside writers include Marjorie Agosin\, Willis Barnstone\, Daniel Boorstin\, Andre Codrescu\, Billy Collins\, Hayden Curruth\, Carol V. Davis\, John Dofflemyer\, Joseph Duemer\, Gretel Ehrlich\, Martha Elizabeth\, A. Bartlett Giamatti\, Shaun T. Griffin\, James W. Hulse\, Linda Hussa\, Donna Johnson\, Robert Laxalt\, Wally McRae\, Joel Nelson\, Steven Nightingale\, Naomi Shahib Nye\, Gailmarie Pahmeier\, Robert Pinsky\, Kirk Robertson\, Gary Short\, Kevin Stevens\, Bill Stobb\, Michael White\, Terry Tempest Williams and Paul Zarzyski.\nABOUT Curated by Bob Blesse with Gallery Notes essay by Harry Reese and organized by the Nevada Arts Council\, “Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press”\, is part of the Nevada Touring Initiative–Traveling Exhibition Program. It was funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Nevada Humanities\, and the Nevada State Legislature and an anonymous donor. The Nevada Arts Council is a division of the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.###\nFor more information please contact:Stephen Reid – Artist Services Specialist\, Art Installer Nevada Arts Council I 775.687.7108 sreid@nevadaculture.org.

SUMMARY:Reassembly Required
DESCRIPTION:The Clark County Public Art Office is pleased to announce our latest exhibition that delves into the themes of destruction and reconstruction\, where artists reassemble objects to tell poignant stories about loved ones and cherished memories. By reuniting treasured objects with the emotions they evoke\, these artists forge deeper connections with their subjects. Others explore the societal landscape\, crafting new futures and narratives from discarded elements. As we rebuild and reimagine\, we can forge new memories and communities but always remember there will be Reassembly Required. \nJeannie Hua serves as this exhibition’s juror. She graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an MFA in 2022 and has taught collage making at Ox-Bow School of Art for their Art in the Meadows Workshops. Her mixed medias and collages have been shown in New York City\, Chicago\, and Las Vegas. She has also participated in group exhibitions in galleries and museums in Nevada\, New York\, Illinois\, California\, Michigan\, Virginia\, Wisconsin\, Pennsylvania\, Utah\, Tennessee\, Oregon\, and Orquevaux in France. She currently has a solo show at Core Contemporary\, one of the 15 exhibits taking place as part of Post Invisibles 2024 Biennial. \nReception: Thursday\, Sept. 12\, 2024\, from 6-8 p.m. \nReassembly Required Exhibiting Artists: \nBailey Anderson\, Carina Arriaga\, Chad Martinez\, Daniela Castañeda\, Dave Heide\, David Lampel\, Deanne Sole\, John McVay\, Karen Barraza\, Laura Meyer\, Louise Ahrendt\, Madison Heynen\, Malachi Schlink\, Mark Kaufman\, Michael Singh\, Michelle Rose Walker\, Monica James\, Rachel Hoyt\, Rebecca Goodman\, Samantha Giddens\, Samara Ramos\, Sandra Swan\, Sogand Tabatabaei\, Stormi Holt\, Zoe Mekelle

SUMMARY:Canceled: Sagebrush to Sandstone: Cyanotype Workshop with Megan Berner
DESCRIPTION:EVENT IS CANCELED. \nThe cyanotype is an early photographic printing process that uses sunlight and water to create images. Cyanotype images are deep\, cyan-blue\, and were used in the original blueprint process. In this workshop led by visual artist Megan Berner\, participants will create original photograms by arranging objects on sensitized paper. Using natural and found objects to make their prints\, participants will learn how to prepare their own cyanotype paper and have an opportunity to experiment with the process. Participants are welcome to bring small objects that can be used to create images. Leaves\, plants\, lace\, ribbon\, anything with an interesting shape will work well. We will also provide supplies and some objects that participants can use. \nThis workshop will be conducted outside. Please plan accordingly and wear weather-appropriate clothing. SUMMARY:A Glimpse Back
DESCRIPTION:Carson City\, Nevada — Capital City Arts Initiative is delighted to present work by the late artist\, Robert Morrison\, in the “A Glimpse Back” exhibition. His work reflected an active and ongoing dialogue between both geometric and organic forces. \nCCAI’s exhibit will be in Western Nevada College’s Bristlecone Gallery\, 2201 W College Parkway\, Carson City from Sept. 18 – Dec. 11\, 2024. The gallery is open to the public\, Monday through Friday\, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. The artist’s reception will take place on Tuesday\, October 22\, 5 – 6:30 p.m. \nMorrison (1941 – 2018)\, created countless sculptures\, paintings\, and drawings during his lifetime. Late in his career\, his metal sculptures evolved to include sound. A major installation work was Tongues: The Half Life of Morphine (1986) presented by the Nevada Museum of Art as part of Robert Morrison: A Retrospective in 2004. Quoted from the museum’s catalog by the same title\, critic Jeff Kelley wrote: “As a sculptor\, he works with manufactured steel plate. As a performer\, he works with electronic and ambient sound. That he is and uses both suggests the degree to which neither\, alone\, defines his identity as an artist. Like an endless string of reflections\, that identity teeters on the edge of powerful dualities: abstraction and figuration\, masculine and feminine\, denial and expression\, mass communication and isolation\, silence and speech — maybe even father and son\, which\, if you are a man and an artist represents both the power and powerlessness of your own personality.” \nMorrison created and showed his art for over five decades in many group and one-person exhibitions locally and nationally\, including Los Angeles\, San Francisco\, Las Vegas\, Florida\, Texas\, and New York. He earned a bachelor’s degree from California State University\, Fresno\, a master’s degree from Stanford University\, and did post-graduate studies at the University of California\, Davis. Sculpture Magazine did a feature article on Morrison written by William L. Fox in its March 2005 edition. The National Endowment for the Arts awarded Morrison a Visual Arts Fellowship in 1990\, and the Nevada Arts Council awarded him Visual Arts Fellowships in 1990 and 1984. He was Professor in the Art Department and chair of the sculpture program at the University of Nevada\, Reno from 1968–2017 and was awarded emeritus status on his retirement. \nProfessor Brett Van Hoesen wrote the exhibition essay for “A Glimpse Back” about her colleague and friend. She specializes in European modern and contemporary art with emphasis on German art\, Dada\, photomontage\, visual culture studies\, German colonial studies\, and sound art. Additional areas of research include African art and museum studies. Van Hoesen travels regularly for national and international conferences. Before joining the University of Nevada\, Reno faculty\, she served as the visiting instructor for modern and contemporary art history at the University of Missouri\, Columbia. Van Hoesen also has held museum internships at the Busch-Reisinger Museum and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University\, the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore\, and the University of Iowa Museum of Art. She regularly presents public lectures and provides docent training at the Nevada Museum of Art. In summer of 2012\, she taught a course in contemporary art in Torino\, Italy\, for the University Studies Abroad Consortium. \nCarlos Ramirez\, a former Western Nevada College Latino Leadership Academy student\, provided a Spanish translation of the show’s wall text. \nWestern Nevada College is a component of the Nevada System of Higher Education\, with campuses in Carson City\, Douglas County\, and Fallon. CCAI is an artist-centered nonprofit organization committed to community engagement in contemporary visual arts through exhibitions\, illustrated talks\, arts education programs\, artist residencies\, and online activities. \nThe Initiative is funded by the John and Grace Nauman Foundation\, Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities\, Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts\, Kaplan Family Charitable Fund\, Southwest Gas Corporation Foundation\, Steele & Associates LLC\, and CCAI sponsors and members. \nFor additional information\, please visit CCAI’s website at www.ccainv.org.

With years of experience in photography\, Najera has developed a singular perspective on documenting the shifting scenes of cities\, roadways\, and buildings. Notable projects include covering the revitalization of Historic Brush Park in Detroit\, documenting train stations in the Midwest\, and most recently exploring housing affordability issues in Washoe County. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University in Michigan in 2007 and a M.F.A. degree from the University of Nevada\, Reno in 2013. She lives in Reno with her family. \nAlicia Barber\, Ph.D.\, wrote the exhibition essay for Najera’s show. She is a historian\, educator\, and author working at the intersections of public memory\, historic landscapes\, and community identity. She focuses her work on the history\, culture\, and built environments of the city of Reno\, the state of Nevada\, and the American West. Barber is the founder/owner of Stories in Place LLC. Her independent and collaborative exhibits and historical markers\, oral histories\, and digital projects include Reno Historical\, Illuminating Reno’s Divorce Industry\, and the 4th Street-Prater Way History Project. The works on display capture the essence of spirituality\, drawing on ancestral wisdom and practices that have shaped the cultural identity of Afro-Latino peoples. \nThe exhibit pulsates with vibrant colors\, each piece a testament to the resilience and creativity of the Afro-Latino spirit. Intricate patterns\, inspired by historical and cultural elements\, weave stories of struggle\, triumph\, and revolution. These artworks are not just visual spectacles; they are powerful commentaries on identity\, belonging\, and the ongoing fight for justice and recognition. PSYCHDELICCHOLA invites you to immerse yourself in a world where the past and present collide\, where spirituality and history converge to create a revolutionary vision of the future. As you explore the exhibit\, may you be inspired by the boldness and beauty of Afro-Latino culture\, and may you leave with a deeper appreciation for the intricate patterns that bind us all.

SUMMARY:“Slow Draw” Jessica Hayworth Kelly Chorpening Otis Poisson Curated By: Chris Lanier (City Artist)
DESCRIPTION:City of Reno City Hall \nMetro Gallery\, 1st floor \nSept. 30 – Nov. 22\, 2024 \nReception: Tuesday\, Oct. 10\, 2024\, 5 – 7 p.m. \nReno\, NV – The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Slow Draw” a group exhibition with work by Jessica Hayworth\, Kelly Chorpening\, and Otis Poisson. Curated by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier\, the show runs from Sept. 30 – Nov. 22\, 2024\, with the reception on Tuesday\, Oct. 10\, 2024\, 5 – 7 p.m. \n“Slow Draw” is a play on the Western-flavored phrase “quick draw\,” and nods to the various cultural movements grouped under the adjective “slow” – slow food\, slow fashion\, and so on. In that context\, “slowness” indicates a sense of care and attention to quality\, as an antidote to the rapidity and frantic busyness of modern life. Each of these artists labors over their drawings – fastidious\, careful\, and intensely observant. Particularly in the current visual environment\, where Artificial Intelligence can produce detailed images in a matter of seconds. there is a particular value to images made – deliberately\, thoughtfully\, and slowly – by a human hand. \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. Metro Gallery is open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is accessible through City Hall’s ground floor entrance on Virginia Street. Parking is available in the City Hall parking garage (northwest corner of First and Center streets). Parking validation can be found inside City Hall. \nTo learn more please visit: https://www.reno.gov/community/arts-culture/city-art-galleries or contact City of Reno Arts & Culture at 775-334-6264.
