SUMMARY:TMCC Portfolio Emphasis Class Presents: "Calm Spaces\," "Head Case\," & "Morte"
DESCRIPTION:Gallery West in the McKinley Arts & Culture Center is proud to host an exhibition featuring works from students in the 2022 Portfolio Emphasis Class at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC). The exhibition includes three parts: “Calm Spaces” by Julianna Horvath\, “Head Case” by Ryan Hartman\, and “Morte by Maggie Pollock.” \nThe Portfolio Emphasis class is the capstone class to a fine arts degree at TMCC\, where students learn to create a body of work and host a professional art exhibition from start to finish. The exhibition will run from December 19\, 2022 to February 10\, 2023 in McKinley Arts and Culture Center\, Gallery West. The public is invited to attend the artists’ reception on Thursday\, January 19\, 2023 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \n“Calm Spaces” \nIn “Calm Spaces\,” Horvath looks to evoke feelings of calmness\, rest\, and relaxation. Using collage and painting\, she creates imagery that invites the viewer to feel peace and quiet. The world today is chaotic and overwhelming. Her goal is to create art\, with imagery that allows for detail-oriented introspection\, through images filled with nature\, neutral tones\, floral patterns\, embellishments\, and intricate details. Her hope that when viewed\, these pieces give someone a moment of rest. \n “Head Case” \n“Head Case” is a collection of sculptures that focuses on showing mental disorders through anthropomorphized and abstract characters. Individuals with mental disorders commonly attempt to cope with their problems and mask themselves to fit into “normal” social environments. This collection is meant to teach the audience about these issues through details and mannerisms portrayed in each character that symbolize coping mechanisms and side effects caused by certain disorders. It’s natural to anthropomorphize objects\, animals\, and other arts in order to relate their issues so that others can relate to them. Hartman’s focus in these sculptures is to imagine these characters in physical form but not make them realistic. His art style is semi-realistic with rustic coloring\, proper portions with exaggerated expressions\, and details to emphasize my symbolism. Hartman wants his audience to be drawn in by the exaggerated details. \n\n“Morte” \nMaggie Pollock’s goal with her series\, “Morte\,” is to provoke conversations about loss and grief through her art. Each of her paintings is a reflection of a person close to her who has passed. She is painting to imitate the Italian renaissance style\, using oil paint on canvas. She set up each still life to have small things that are full of symbolism and meaning that point to her grief without it being obvious. For example\, she includes flowers in many of her paintings. Plant symbolism has been used to convey particular meanings going back to the Middle Ages\, through the Renaissance\, and into the Victorian Era. Today\, not as many are familiar with the messages of flowers\, but through her interest and research\, she includes their hidden meanings to portray her emotions about the person she is mourning. She wants to show that even after someone is gone\, she can still hold love for them. Pollock would like the viewer to try and understand each pieces meaning and to reflect on their own experiences with loss. She would like to bring light to some of the more beautiful aspects of grief\, as it can make one see the beauty of life and make us appreciate it more. Overall\, Pollock hopes to create a sense of sadness and wonder in each piece. We all will experience grief in our lives\, it is an unavoidable thing\, but we can also celebrate the beauty of each person for who they were and the life they got to live. \n

SUMMARY:Monday Night Poetry & Poetry Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Monday Night Poetry occurs every Monday at Shim’s Surplus\, organized by Spoken Views Collective. \nJanuary’s Lineup of events: \n1/02: Birthday Bash Open Mic followed by Poetry Book Club \n1/09: Open Mic w/ Poetry Games \n1/16: Open Mic w/ Writing Workshop: Emotional Inheritance \n1/23: Open Mic w/ Winter Ball Attire \n1/30: Open Mic to Benefit Our Center \n  \nThe Poetry Book Club follows every 1st Monday:\n1st Mondays after @mondaynightpoetrynv\n125 W 3rd St.\, Reno\, NV \nAbout Spoken Views Collective: \n\n\n\nThe idea of a spoken word focused event started around 2006 and our vision was to build a spoken word scene in Reno\, NV. Our little city has a reputation for being a little behind the times but  we knew there was a need for a platform to allow poets to share their work in a welcoming environment. After a few trial runs of hosting shows with poets and musicians we were confident that the city was hungry (and ready) for a spoken word scene;  as the interest and participation grew\, we then formed the Spoken Views Collective. With the help of many local businesses around Reno\, we were able to throw events and open mic nights to share the spoken word experience. We are proud to be the premier spoken word hub and collective in The Biggest Little City.

SUMMARY:"Light\, Color\, and Contrast" - Latimer Art Club Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is proud to host the Latimer Art Club in their exhibition “Color\, Light\, and Contrast.” \nThe exhibition will run from January 9 to February 17\, 2023 in Reno City Hall\, Metro Gallery. The public is invited to attend the artists’ reception on Thursday\, January 12\, 2023 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \nThe Latimer Art Club has a long and rich history in Reno. The club was formed in 1921\, by students of a California artist\, Lorenzo P. Latimer. He began teaching in the Sierras\, at or near Fallen Leaf Lake where he would spend some lovely summer months from 1916 forward. His students formed the club with his advice and instruction\, and it carries on today\, over 100 years later. \nToday’s members must present samples of their work to be voted into membership\, similar to what was required in the early years. Their work must be exhibit quality\, to become an “active” member versus “associate” members who may be students or art aficionados. The artists work in various mediums – oils\, acrylics\, pastels\, watercolor\, and mixed media. The styles you will see are also varied. Although Mr. Latimer painted mostly landscapes in either watercolor or oils\, today’s members produce award-winning works in abstract\, impressionist\, semi-realistic or highly realistic styles.

SUMMARY:SHELTER by Killing Trends & Jesse Hudson
DESCRIPTION:RSVP REQUIRED\nI’m very excited to announce my latest project titled Shelter\, an immersive art experience/photo series located in @dtlv at my new studio @killingtrends.\nI have been working on Shelter for the past year\, living in constant construction and mayhem.\nShelter attempts to make the size and complexity of a hyperobject like nuclear destruction tangible and relatable. People can step inside a 1950s bunker and directly experience for themselves what the restrictions of a war-fraught future might be like.\nThe show features artifacts from World War II and civil defense relics. Some of which I have discovered in undisclosed locations across the Las Vegas Valley.\nIt’s always been fascinating to me how much Nuclear testing\, both atmospheric and underground\, occurred here in Nevada after World War II. Nevada was chosen to be the breeding ground of tests that were conducted specifically in order to determine the effects of nuclear fallout on the American public. Many people living close to the test site were encouraged to watch the nuclear tests from their porches. Most of my work has always been focused on a forgotten past or an unknown future. Shelter was made in hopes that I can provide more insight on these topics for a generation that might have otherwise never known it to exist.\nBeyond the immersive installation space\, I will be launching a pop-up analog camera store called @fremontphotoco\, which will not only have film and cameras to be purchased but also will have development services at hand as well as fine art tabletop books. My overall goal with the space is to give underrepresented artists who have a hard time getting seen in the local community a space to create and show art. In the next five years\, the space is projected to support future Las Vegas artists with their own multimedia productions\, with goals to one day turn the whole space into a non-profit artist program where upcoming artists from across the world can apply to be sponsored for a full month.\nShelter opens at 5pm on January 21st\, 2023 at 901 Fremont Street #110 Las Vegas\, Nevada 89101\nDonations are encouraged as the project has been completely self-funded.\n\nRSVP at Killingtrends.com

Folk have traveled from far and wide to bask in its glow. \nThe Paiute\, Pueblo\, and Moapa bands took the journey long before the lights. Coming down from the mountains to set up winter camp in the valley\, they hunted and fished here\, cultivated rice\, and bathed in the natural springs. Each migration that followed—from the Spanish scouts who christened us “The Meadows\,” Las Vegas\, to the missionaries\, prospectors\, settlers\, and gangsters—chased not only a change of season\, but a kind of erasure\, a starting again. \nThe same was true for Black families journeying out of the southern reaches of the U.S. The shimmer of a desert dimly lit by the first lights\, well before the Strip\, promised an escape from racial terror\, limited opportunity\, and the legacy of Jim Crow. Sunday morning preachers encouraged parishioners to seek economic salvation by traveling West. The brilliant reportage of Ida B. Wells\, whose work led to the Anti-Lynching Laws of 1900\, further sparked the Great Migration\, as more than 6 million African-Americans relocated from the rural South to burgeoning cities in the North and West\, between 1910 and 1970. Early Black pioneers\, such as John Howell\, who prospected and ranched as early as 1870\, were the lodestar for those who came in the post-WWII boom as the Hoover Dam began construction.  In the decades since\, Black Las Vegans continue to leave behind established meccas of culture in D.C.\, Richmond\, Charlotte\, Chicago\, Detroit\, L.A.\, Atlanta to find surprising sustenance here in this desert—discovering and building a community\, a connection\, an excellence and identity that flourishes within and beyond the neon. \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS\nJeff Scheid has been photographing Las Vegas for more than three decades. From chasing down the infamous Hole in the Wall Gang and Chicago mobster Tony “The Ant” Spilotro with his defense attorney Oscar Goodman as they walk defiantly out the doors of justice\, to photographing the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels basketball team on the road to the National Championship\, to capturing some of the most famous celebrities on the Las Vegas Strip\, Scheid has been there to tell the story of Las Vegas. \nHe co-authored the book “Quicksilver\, The Ted Binion Murder Case.” The book documented the trial with over 200 photos. \nScheid is a celebrated photographer who chronicled the history and day-to-day lives of the Fallini family\, owners of one of Nevada’s oldest working ranches in Nevada. Titled “Ranching in the High Desert\,” the series exhibited at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City and the Nevada State Museum in Las Vegas. He has also captured the lives of everyday and celebrity workers on the Las Vegas Strip. Jeff’s current projects include documenting old and new Nevada. Jeff balances his time photographing life in rural Nevada and the ethnic diversity of Las Vegas. \nErica Vital-Lazare: Artist\, writer\, and professor of creative writing at the College\, Erica is a recipient of grants and awards from the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation\, the Virginia Commonwealth University’s Hilliard Endowment\, the Virginia Council of the Arts and the Nevada Arts Council. Cofounder of the nonprofit\, The Obodo Collective\, she is editor of a forthcoming series revisiting classic Black works in literature with McSweeney’s Press\, Of the Diaspora. \nAbout the Office for the Arts at Nevada State\nThe Office for the Arts enhances living and learning through arts and culture on campus and in the community. We further this mission by supporting the creative endeavors of our students and our community. Some of these endeavors include: The Artist at Work\, The Campus as Museum\, Nevada State Collections & Galleries\, and the Marydean Martin Writers’ Project. SUMMARY:Sandy Valley Earth Day Water Theme Festival of Art Science Music More
DESCRIPTION:EARTH DAY SANDY VALLEY NV: Decade of Micro°Fests: Water Celebration 2023 \nApril 22 is Earth Day worldwide and will be joyfully celebrated in Clark County Nevada by honoring those who bravely defended Sandy Valley’s local aquifer\, with history\, art\, science and music at their second annual event of a planned decade of micro°fests\, 12:00-4:00\, rain or shine\, free\, all ages\, Sandy Valley Senior Center\, 690 Quartz Avenue. \nSpecifically designed to be cozy\, you are asked to “Bring Your Lunch” as a sweet tradition\, and subtle nod to all mothers\, and to “keep it simple!” \n“Sandy Valley Earth Day: Decade of Micro°Fests” was founded by the trustee of Richard and Drue Bale Family Trust\, M. Donnelly. This year’s theme is local water. Last year’s theme was local mining and geology and next year’s theme is air. \nSandy Valley Nevada\, forty miles south of Las Vegas\, has few modern amenities; however\, they have something more precious: courage\, self-reliance\, persistence and fierce vigilant protection of their local aquifer. \nFor a decade\, dozens of unstoppable resident volunteers\, such as the Bacher\, Knight\, Clark\, Lowe and other families\, worked with geologist Joy Fiore\, lawyer Al Marquis\, Judge Dawn Haviland and others to thwart powerful Vidler Company (now owned by D.R. Horton\, largest homebuilder in the United States) that was hellbent on taking water from their Sandy Mesquite aquifer\, to ship it roughly 20 miles over mountains to Primm\, for high profit casino commercial use. That would have  likely caused permanent drought in this mostly micro agricultural horse raising community. These unconquerable residents became known as the “Water Warriors.” \nIt started when the Bacher and Knight families\, then living on Cherokee Avenue\, saw industrial trucks with giant conduit pipes plowing into the dry lakebed outside their windows on a holiday weekend! Their combined quick action stopped the surreptitious effort of Vidler Company. Immediately word spread about that brazen illegal attempt to “take nearly all our water\, against any legal standing\, or notice.” \nTo honor them\, this water celebration commissioned art by muralist and Sandy Valley resident Shawn Ealy. It will be permanently displayed above a sleek steel water fountain in the Senior Center. Shawn’s painting-collage will feature local gems\, sand\, artifacts and interpretation of the warrior logo amidst a locally inspired water scene. \nThe water warriors hired resident super-lawyer\,\nAl Marquis after the lead attorney died of a heart attack from stress. Al is a Sandy Valley ranch-owner\, cowboy poet and philanthropist\, beloved for generosity and quick wit.\nHe returns this year with his presentation\, “Preserving Our Water” which shares legal battle twists\, turns and adventures\, that resulted in the remarkable victorious decision from the Nevada Supreme Court that protects Sandy Valley\, locally known as\, the “little village that beat the ‘big guys’ against all odds.” \nPrecious Nevada local history should never be forgotten\, hence\, a memory book of articles\, photos\, testimonies and ephemera will stay with Ealy’s permanent art as a growing history archive. \nSandy Valley is part of Goodsprings mining district\, where Joe Good’s abundant springs supplied water to miners\, companies and travelers far and wide. Intricacies of collecting\, distributing and managing water will be shared by Mary Blake of Goodsprings Historical Society\, who returns a second year to Earth Day. Of note\, their annual walking tour is a “must do!” Many dine afterward at historically preserved Pioneer Saloon which donates to GHS and other community events. Goodsprings “names wall” is featured in Pioneer’s dining garden. Walking tour brochures are available in their general store. \nLas Vegas Valley Water District retired engineer\, Sandy resident Kevin McMahan\, will speak about large and small water systems\, pumping\, purifying\, and understanding dynamics of water. \nSouthern Nevada Gem and Mineral Society lifetime member and Kids Club educational ambassador\, Mary Beth Paladino\, returns to talk about Marine Fossils and host an activity table with giveaways. \nRounding out the event is Reiki Master Eileen Meeks\, Pahrump dot-com owner of Stoned Healer\, who will share scientifically proven water “memory.” \nA joyful acoustic jam\, hosted by Pioneer Saloon owner\, guitarist Stephen Staats (aka Old Man Liver) and “Remynders” band member Kevin Magowan will play water-themed tunes\, a few sing-alongs as well as original music.\nBetween presentations will be easy rubber-duckie games\, giveaways and a mermaid photo-op! \nEarth Day was established in 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson to bolster public consciousness about air and water pollution. Employing Dennis Hayes to coordinate grassroot college involvement\, their efforts led to establishing the Environmental Protection Agency\, Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. Working collaboratively with Republican Pete McClosky they chose April 22 because that is between Spring Break and Final Exams\, to maximize student participation. \nMost mamas said to us as we went to school\,\n“Don’t forget your lunch!” Sandy Valley Earth Day keeps that common memory alive. \nevent line: 702-723-0085\nFacebook:\nhttps://m.facebook.com/groups/908218503144462/\nHandicap accessible\, free parking.\nDirections: Exit 12 off I 15\, right on route 161\,\nleft on Sandy Valley Road curvy mountain pass\,\nright on Cherokee\, which bends left\,\nand becomes Quartz\,  690 Quartz. far west end.\nadjoining park has shaded picnic tables\, bathrooms and grass lawn. \n \n++++++END++++++

DESCRIPTION:Afsaneh Javanmard creates unforgettable photographs by combining her bold creative vision with extracting technical skill. One of the first women to pursue a career in commercial photography in Iran\, Javanmard began taking photos professionally in Tehran in her early 20s. As a teenager\, she carried her camera everywhere\, winning praise for her photographs of friends and family. After studying photography at a private university in Tehran\, she started making family portraits and photographing Persian weddings professionally. \nShe likes to create a surreal world and drown herself in it. A peaceful and colorful place to avoid the reality and cruelty of the world. “Water is a symbol of purity\, I feel weightless and free\, shapeless\, unpredictable\, wild\, and at the same time collected. When I put my head under the water\, I feel this energy that’s like a musical symphony\, its cheerful and liberating.”
