SUMMARY:Art Exhibition - Preservation of Life\, Art\, and Culture by Djibril N’Doye
DESCRIPTION:Left of Center Art Gallery \nIs pleased to present:\nPreservation of Life\, Art and Culture\nWork by artist Djibril N’Doye \nDisplay run: January 17 – March 23\, 2024 \nReception: Saturday\, January 20\, 2024\nNoon – 3:00 p.m. \nGallery Hours: Tuesday\, by appointment\nWednesday – Friday\, noon – 4:00 p.m.\nSaturday\, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nAll exhibits are free to the public.\nLeft of Center Art Gallery (LOC) is pleased to present\, Preservation of Life\, Art\, and Culture\, featuring the artwork of Djibril N’Doye. Originally from Senegal\, N’Doye is well known for his wood burning expertise. This body of artwork honors the Dogon people in Mali\, who are known all over the world for their collectable wood carvings\, terra cotta\, and bronze sculptures. The Dogon bring a large-scale contribution to the art world and also to African Symbolism. \nThe Dogon region is now overrun by terrorists who have destroyed and vandalized artwork and historical archives in the name of religion. A society without culture will not thrive. This exhibit is a tribute to the people and the art of Dogon. It will remain up through Black History Month. \nLeft of Center Art Gallery\n2207 W. Gowan Rd.\nN. Las Vegas\, NV 89032\n702-647-7378\nleftofcenterart.org \nLeft of Center Art Gallery is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. This program was supported\, in part\, by the Nevada Arts Council\, a state agency\, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts\, a federal agency\, and the state of Nevada.

SUMMARY:Lee Lanier: You Write the Story
DESCRIPTION:Lee Lanier\, of Lee Lanier Paints Art Gallery located in the Arts Factory\, has created this interactive exhibit inviting viewers to write the narratives for his quirky\, acrylic paintings. Lanier created the exhibit based on his opinion that visitors to LLPAG often had more interesting interpretations of his paintings than he did. The characters in the paintings interact with surrounding objects or each other\, and are often based on mythological\, literary\, or pop-culture archetypes. Although these paintings are narrative in nature\, they present scenes midway through a particular tale so that the viewer can decide what is transpiring. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nI am fascinated with old stories. The inspiration for my works almost always starts with a historical\, literary\, and mythological character. Like Renaissance artists\, I weave complex narratives with multiple posed figures. I am drawn to universal human themes such as life and death\, temptation and faith\, and creativity and industry. My end goal is to create works of art that can be viewed multiple times while inspiring spirited conversations among groups of dissimilar viewers. \nOn exhibit at Windmill Library from February 13\, 2024 through April 28\, 2024

SUMMARY:“Figures & Fantasy” - Illustrations by David Wilson
DESCRIPTION:David Wilson\, in his debut exhibition “Figures & Fantasy\,” unveils a captivating world where gestures transcend into expressive tales. His work\, a fusion of life drawing and fantasy illustrations\, encapsulates movement\, light\, and the vivid personalities of characters. Influenced by the whimsical genius of Bill Watterson and the dynamic artistry of Albert Uderzo\, David seamlessly blends traditional and digital media. Pencil sketches capture raw movement\, gouache paints breathe life into his creations\, and digital touch-ups add a vibrant pop. Motivated by an existential quest and a touch of nihilism\, David defines artistic success by the joy it imparts. SUMMARY:Black Life Ordinary Reception
DESCRIPTION:Come Experience Black Life Ordinary \nThe Clark County Office of Public Arts is thrilled to present our annual Black History Month exhibition with this year’s theme of Black Life Ordinary. The exhibit will be located inside the Clark County Government Center’s Rotunda Gallery and will be exhibiting from Monday\, January 15\, 2024\, through Thursday\, February 29\, 2024. Clark County Government Center is located at 500 S Grand Central Pkwy. Las Vegas\, NV 89155. Existing and being able to express yourself without any pressures happens so rarely and\, with this exhibition\, we aim to illustrate that feeling. This theme is inspired by the profound insights of Black scholars who have explored the significance of the mundane in shaping the Black experience. The artists in this show are showing Blackness without any conditions or stipulations. We will also be featuring poetry\, live music\, food\, refreshments\, and a photobooth! This is one event you don’t want to miss! \nThis exhibition was juried by Claytee White\, the inaugural director of the Oral History Research Center at UNLV Libraries. With her extensive experience in collecting the history of Las Vegas through the memories of long-time residents\, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the selection process. Her oral history projects\, which include Early Las Vegans\, Latinx\, Asian American Pacific Islanders\, Jews\, and African Americans\, have contributed immensely to preserving the diverse narratives that shape our community. \nBlack Life Ordinary features the following artists and performers: \nSamuel Akem\, Biya the Painter\, Dyron Boyd\, Karen Buford\, Tamara Carter\, Sherell Chillik\, X. Darvi\, Karla Ely\, LaRon Emcee\, Nancy Erskine\, Stasia Fisher\, Pablo Gonzalez Flores\, Julia Gonzalez Hall\, Charles Hobert Jr.\, Cindy Jackson\, Anthony Johnson\, Ken Kammal\, K. Marie\, Tony C. SUMMARY:Pitching Your Work to Publications: A Workshop with Tajja Isen
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nThis hybrid seminar/workshop on pitching to publications will operate in two parts: In the first hour\, we will discuss what makes a strong pitch; how that varies depending on the type of story or outlet where you’re sending your work (newspaper\, magazine\, literary journal\, etc.); and analyze a few (anonymized) examples of successful and unsuccessful pitches to different publications to get a clearer sense of what works vs. what doesn’t. \nAfter a short break\, the second hour will be workshop-based: A number of participants will submit a 2-3 paragraph pitch in advance of the meeting and indicate whether they are open to circulating their pitch to the group for discussion (with the caveat that we may not have time to get through everyone’s pitches during the session). Regardless of whether writers want their work discussed in the workshop\, all participants will receive written feedback on their pitches.  \n**There are also a limited number of spots available to attend the session without submitting work beforehand—there’s an option to indicate that preference in the form below. \nTajja Isen is the author of Some of My Best Friends: Essays on Lip Service\, named a Best Book of the Year by Electric Literature\, The Globe and Mail\, CBC Books\, and Daily Hive. As an editor\, she has worked at Catapult and The Walrus\, and she is co-editor of the essay anthology The World as We Knew It: Dispatches from a Changing Climate. She has written for The Atlantic\, Vulture\, Time\, and Longreads\, among other outlets. Her next book is a memoir on mentorship and ambition. She is a Spring 2024 Shearing Fellow at Black Mountain Institute at UNLV. \n\n
