DESCRIPTION:Clark County Public Art is thrilled to announce our upcoming exhibition\, Living in the Dessert juried by Brian “Paco” Alvarez in the Rotunda Gallery\, nestled within the Clark County Government Center. \nA spin on the common misspellings of desert and dessert\, Living in the Dessert is an exhibition that fuses our arid environment with the indulgent treats that most enjoy eating — especially the cold variety during months like these! The artists selected portrayed this fusion in creative and innovative ways using a wide array of mediums. You will see work that either brings the desert into the denseness of desserts or desserts into the dreamscape of the desert! \nThis exhibition is juried by Las Vegas native Brian “Paco” Álvarez\, an entrepreneur\, anthropologist\, and CEO of Psionic Art Works. DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Run: April 16 – Aug. 2\, 2024\nThalia Dondero Gallery\, CEB 2nd floorGlenn & Ande Christenson School of Education Building\nNevada State University1300 Nevada State DriveHenderson\, NV 89002\nM-F 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Closed on July 4\, 2024)Free Parking\n\nNevada State University’s Office for the Arts presents “Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press”\, featuring 34 broadsides produced at the Black Rock Press at the University of Nevada\, Reno using the letterpress process with handset type and relief plates. The printing was done on a Vandercook cylinder proofing press.\nSince it was founded by Kenneth J. Carpenter more than 40 years ago\, the Press has been dedicated to the practice and teaching of the arts and crafts associated with the creation of finely printed books. The Press now has a national reputation for its outstanding work and has become a living museum of traditional printing technology\, housing a variety of cabinets filled with metal type\, and a number of historically significant printing presses. Its centerpiece\, a gilded 1837 super-royal Columbian iron handpress\, is one of the finest examples of a nineteenth century iron handpress to be found anywhere in the country.\nLetterpress broadsides are created for numerous reasons\, frequently to honor a visiting writer at a campus event. The Press has produced broadsides to honor university residencies by U.S. poets laureate Robert Pinsky and Billy Collins. Several broadsides were printed in conjunction with a national poetry broadside competition held in the 1990s; winning poets received cash awards and had their poems printed as broadsides. In recent years\, broadsides have been produced for the Robert Laxalt Distinguished Writers Award\, presented annually by the university’s Reynolds School of Journalism. Each broadside features a quotation from the writings of Robert Laxalt\, one of Nevada’s finest writers. Most of the broadsides in this exhibit were designed and printed by Bob Blesse\, director of the Press. Others have also contributed\, including John Balkwill who was in residence as a book artist and printmaker at the Press during the mid-1990s. Former students assisted with the design\, production\, and illustration of the broadsides.\nBroadside writers include Marjorie Agosin\, Willis Barnstone\, Daniel Boorstin\, Andre Codrescu\, Billy Collins\, Hayden Curruth\, Carol V. Davis\, John Dofflemyer\, Joseph Duemer\, Gretel Ehrlich\, Martha Elizabeth\, A. Bartlett Giamatti\, Shaun T. Griffin\, James W. Hulse\, Linda Hussa\, Donna Johnson\, Robert Laxalt\, Wally McRae\, Joel Nelson\, Steven Nightingale\, Naomi Shahib Nye\, Gailmarie Pahmeier\, Robert Pinsky\, Kirk Robertson\, Gary Short\, Kevin Stevens\, Bill Stobb\, Michael White\, Terry Tempest Williams and Paul Zarzyski.\nABOUT Curated by Bob Blesse with Gallery Notes essay by Harry Reese and organized by the Nevada Arts Council\, “Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press”\, is part of the Nevada Touring Initiative–Traveling Exhibition Program. The show runs from May 28 – July 19\, 2024\, showcasing a wide range of quilt genres.   \nAppreciate quilted art as you encounter techniques such as hand quilting\, vintage-fabrics and patterns\, traditional designs\, modern creations\, classic Hawaiian techniques\, appliques\, and more. The expanse of styles on display reflects the diversity of the Truckee Meadows Quilters members. Diverse though they may be\, they have much in common; their generosity and their joy at sharing their love of quilting with others.  \nTruckee Meadows Quilters encourages and promotes quilt making and related arts through education opportunities\, lectures\, demonstrations\, workshops\, and classes. Founded in Reno\, Nevada\, in February 2023\, Downtown Modernists is a newly formed group of artists hailing from the Reno-Sparks and Truckee-Tahoe region working primarily in the abstract style who are seeking to build a coalition of like-minded artists for salons\, group shows\, and the exchange of ideas. DESCRIPTION:Clark County Public Arts is proud to present Queer Monuments juried by Emily Budd. \nQueer Monuments challenges the classical masculine and cultish notions of monuments and provides a platform for ephemeral and anti-monumental alternatives. Monuments are popularly seen as works of art that share the stories of people\, convey societal values\, and remind us of people’s lived histories; they are objects of remembrance. Anti-monuments take these basic premises and reappropriate them to tell the resilient stories of LGBTQIA+ people. The artists in this exhibition present personal monuments to the queerness in their lives. \nSculptor Emily Budd will lead as the exhibition’s juror\, infusing her expertise and passion into the selection process. Budd’s sculptural practice\, driven by the pursuit of queer futurity and place-making\, has garnered acclaim for its transformative narratives. Her project\, Memorial for Queer Rhyolite\, stands as a poignant tribute to an era marked by the AIDS epidemic\, capturing the essence of Nevada’s queer utopian spirit. The show will begin Friday afternoon and go through the whole weekend. We have lots of vendor’s lined up. You will find Turquoise stones\, gems\, handmade jewelry\, antiques\, tokens\, insulators\, glass bottles and much much more. Saturday afternoon at the Tonopah Historic Mining Park we will be offering Silversmithing\, and Wire Wrapping Classes. There will be live demonstrations of lapidary\, rock cutting and polishing.  The fun doesn’t end there. Saturday evening in the downtown plaza there will be live entertainment\, craft vendors and food trucks. Along the way\, she earned a spot on an elite state command team\, a bachelor’s in fire administration\, a law degree\, a master’s in creative writing\, and several leadership awards. Now\, she brings humor and candor to her stories about first responders\, lawyers\, and life. Her first book\, Burnt: A memoir of Fighting Fire is now available at a bookstore or library near you. She lives near Lake Tahoe with her husband and always a dog or two.

DESCRIPTION:SIERRA NEVADA BALLET PRESENTS SLEEPING BEAUTY-A FAIRY’S TALE \nSierra Nevada Ballet shall present a new version of ballet’s famous full-length romantic story in dance\, Sleeping Beauty (A Fairy’s Tale)\, at the Sand Harbor venue on Lake Tahoe on July 29\, and at the Carson City Community Center on Aug. 3. \nChoreographer/directors\, Rosine Bena and Ananda Bena-Weber\, have reimagined this traditional symbolic tale The Sleeping Beauty (La Belle Au Bois Dormant ) for a contemporary audience. Bena and Bena-Weber developed the story through the character of Malefique (the evil fairy). DESCRIPTION:VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System and McKinley Galleries \nExhibition: Aug. 5 – Sept. 13\, 2024 \nReception: Thursday\, Aug. 15\, 5-7 p.m. \nVA Sierra Nevada Health Care System and the City of Reno’s Arts and Culture Department have teamed up to offer veterans a chance to demonstrate their artistic talents in the visual arts at the McKinley Arts & Culture Center Galleries. The local event is part of the 2024 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. The exhibition will run from Aug. 5 – Sept. 13\, 2024\, at McKinley Arts and Culture Center. \n\nVA medical facilities incorporate creative arts into their therapy programs to further the rehabilitation goals for both inpatients and outpatients. This annual competition recognizes the progress and recovery made through that therapy and raises the visibility of the creative achievements of veterans. DESCRIPTION:Clark County Public Arts is proud to present Clark County Zine Club juried by Jeffrey B. Grindley at Winchester-Dondero Cultural Center. \nWelcome to our first ever zine exhibition! Zines\, pronounced “zeen”\, are self-published and oftentimes printed physical media that share ideas\, stories\, art\, tips\, or anything else you can think of by the people who make them. Zines are considered a part of DIY culture\, where artists and makers create works of art with supplies that are readily available to them. The artists in this exhibition invite you into their worlds by giving you stories\, advice\, guides\, personal narratives\, satire\, visual art\, poetry\, and news. This exhibition shows the wide variety of talent that we have in our communities in all forms of artistic disciplines. So\, feel free to visit our gallery\, settle into our little library experience\, and join the Clark County Zine Club. \nOur juror\, Jeffrey B. Grindley\, is the co-founder of the Las Vegas Zine Library and a Las Vegas born artist.
