SUMMARY:Hija/e/o/x(s) de Su— Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Hija/e/o/x(s) de Su—\, a group exhibition curated by Cesar Piedra and Geovany Uranda at Nuwu Art Gallery + Community Center. This exhibition connects artists and their work to the nostalgia behind the phrase “hija/o de tu madre.” Through that phrase\, the artists examine their practice and reflect on childhood and the cultural expectations of living in a latina/e/o/x household. Hija/e/o/x(s) de Su— explores joy\, rebellion\, tragedy\, mischief\, and the feeling of “IYKYK” (if you know\, you know). And if you don’t\, come anyway and say goodbye to Hija/e/o/x(s) de Su— with us! We’ll be having an artist panel featuring Alexys Keller\, Brian Martinez\, Daisy Sanchez\, Ruby Barrientos\, and Kristy Moreno on the topics of nostalgia and growing up. The artist panel will start at 6pm so don’t be late! Pedro Duran will be DJing all night playing the hits. We’ll also have a surprise for those that want to get back in touch with their inner child. You don’t want to miss this event! Bring your family\, bring the kids\, we’re having a fiesta! \nLocation:\nNuwu Art + Community Center (Las Vegas)\n1331 S Maryland Pkwy Las Vegas\, NV 89104 \nReception:\nDecember 7th\, 2023 from 6pm – 9pm \nThe Hija/e/o/x(s) de Su— are: \nAdriana Chavez\nAlexys Keller\nAnny Ayala Ortega\nBrian Martinez\nCesar Piedra\nDaisy Sanchez\nDan45 Hernandez\nEmmanuel Muñoz\nGeovany Uranda\nHäsler Gómez\nJahi\nLauren Cardenas\nRicardo Rubalcaba-Parades\nRobert Ibarra\nRobert Nuñez\nRuby Barrientos\n+ Mujeres Mágicas by\nKristy Moreno

SUMMARY:"Toward a Tangled Turn: Knots\, Nets\, Threads\, & Loops" Closing Reception
DESCRIPTION:Closing Reception and Gallery Viewing of Exhibition. \nSpecial Event Parking available in Whalen Parking Garage. \nLoosely and carefully woven together\, this group art exhibition curated by Austin Pratt features a wide-ranging collection of artworks that point or speak to the ideas of ‘knots\, nets\, threads\, & loops’. This open and poetic meditation on form (physical or otherwise)\, invites reflection on paradox\, ambiguity\, mystery\, and metaphor. From avant-garde electronic noise music through to traditional indigenous woven and beaded baskets; from archival collection of global folk games and narrative devices to contemporary painting and sculpture\, this exhibition examines these guiding and tangled forms in many possible ways: as intellectual curiosities\, mental models or frames\, mathematic diagram\, functional and material tools\, or totemic magical and spiritual objects\, each discrete but non-trivial. Many of these themes and threads here approach analytic concepts and questions from the field of topology\, a branch of pure mathematics. In topology\, geometric forms such as knots and loops are studied and questioned by how they react to various changes. Despite warping\, bending\, twisting\, and stretching\, some properties of geometric objects do not depend on their exact shape\, but how they are put together\, and what is preserved. An object such as the Mobius Strip – a simple\, twisted band\, becomes an infinite single-sided loop\, and serves as an indicative example of a topological curiosity. Knots\, in their numerous spatial complexities\, are another. Walking a more poetic path\, the forms of ‘knots\, nets\, threads & loops’ can be understood through a metaphoric or archetypal perspective. The Buddhist metaphor of life’s Endless Knot\, unifying wisdom and compassion\, or the ancient concept of Eternal Return\, both question the possible recurring and cyclical looping concept of life and time. The psychological and cultural character of the trickster\, throughout world traditions\, resonates metaphorically in roads\, paths\, journeys\, crossroads\, and other in-between sites\, serving as an emblem of sacred messenger\, writer\, boundary-crosser\, rule-breaker\, genius and fool. Mythic characters such as Hermes\, Mercury\, Eshu\, Coyote\, and Bugs Bunny inhabit this tricky place\, finding salience in the twisting journey of a road or labyrinth\, or in the intersecting points in a net or network; crossing boundaries\, breaking rules\, or delivering important messages\, for worse or for better. Toward a Tangled Turn is equal parts mathematic precision and fuzzy dream\, ruminating on questions of mind\, matter\, space\, and time. As part of University Galleries’ mission to serve as an educational and community hub\, this semester-long exhibition invites students and faculty to engage with the themes or artworks in the show in their own coursework as a way to form dialogue among various disciplines. Faculty are invited to visit the exhibit with their classes\, or use the gallery to create prompts for writing projects\, studio work\, or discussions. As an example\, this Fall\, UNR Professor of Mathematics Stanislav Jabuka will be teaching the first-ever course on Knot Theory at UNR. Throughout the semester\, University Galleries’ will be hosting the Visiting Artists & Scholars Lecture Series\, several of which are directly related to the exhibition. In the spirit of this interdisciplinary engagement\, on October 12\, there will be a panel discussion between UNR Professor of Mathematics Christopher Herald and exhibiting visiting artist Julian Hoeber.

SUMMARY:Elaine Parks: Fossils and Bones
DESCRIPTION:Fossils and Bones is a series of ceramic sculptures intended as a reflection on the desert walk where one encounters remains—bones of long dead animals and relics of the past. Desert finds are special and rare and highlight the desire to establish origin and story. The artworks are invented forms created to resemble familiar found bones that defy actual recognition. The exhibition offers a contrasting view of the idea that the desert is an empty\, desolate place\, that instead it is a rich and varied environment if we take the time to look. \nFossils and Bones\, runs from Novemeber 4 through January 14\, 2024. \n \n

SUMMARY:From the Beginning to the End
DESCRIPTION:Biblically inspired paintings of the beginning and the end by Dayo Adelaja\, Bill Bon\, Harold Bradford\, Dyron Boyd\, Jeannie Earhart\, Adolfo Gonzalez\, Cecilia Lary\, and Rita Maroun. \nOver seven years ago some of the artists from Left of Center Art Gallery started meeting on Saturday mornings to have morning prayer and breakfast at my home before heading over to the gallery. One of our greatest blessings is the fact that we were all given the gift of art. We wanted to give thanks to God and glorify Him in some way\, for this awesome talent that we all share. We began to think about ways we could interpret certain events that occurred in scripture and translate them into our paintings. There are floods of subject matter within the scriptures\, and it can be challenging to tell the stories visually. \nThe main reason we chose to title this show From the Beginning to the End is because the paintings are primarily based on the book of Genesis\, which is the first book of the Bible\, and the book of Revelations\, which is the last. With the current events happening all over the world\, we have been asked whether we had premonitions that prompted these paintings. My answer is\, we have all had premonitions\, and we are choosing to tell the stories from our own perspectives\, hoping to leave a lasting impression upon the viewer. \n~ Harold Bradford \nOn exhibit at Sahara West Library from December 8\, 2023 through February 24\, 2024 \nReception on Thursday\, December 14 from 5-7 p.m.

SUMMARY:The Blind Boys of Alabama
DESCRIPTION:The Blind Boys of Alabama are recognized worldwide as living legends of gospel music. Celebrated by The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and The Recording Academy/GRAMMYs with Lifetime Achievement Awards\, inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame\, and winners of five GRAMMY® Awards\, they have attained the highest levels of achievement in a career that spans over 70 years. The Blind Boys are known for crossing multiple musical boundaries with their remarkable interpretations of everything from traditional gospel favorites to contemporary spiritual material by songwriters such as Eric Clapton\, Prince and Tom Waits. They have appeared on recordings with many artists\, including Lou Reed\, Peter Gabriel\, Bonnie Raitt\, Willie Nelson\, Aaron Neville\, Susan Tedeschi\, Ben Harper\, Patty Griffin and Taj Mahal. \n  \nBlind Boys of Alabama released ‘Echoes Of The South’ on Aug 25\, 2023\, which finds the Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductees coming home to honor those they’ve lost\, on a bold declaration of how far they still plan to go. The eleven-song collection is a portrait of perseverance from a group well-versed in overcoming incredible odds – from singing for pocket change in the Jim Crow South\, to performing for three different American presidents\, soundtracking the Civil Rights movement and helping define modern gospel music as we know it. Recently\, the group’s decades-long mission of spreading light and love has taken on even deeper context\, as they’ve reckoned with the loss of two of their own\, Paul Beasley and Benjamin Moore\, both longtime members of the Blind Boys tight-knit family. ‘Echoes Of The South’ is released in their honor – as well as for the group’s recently-retired leader Jimmy Carter – and keeps the Blind Boys’ long-held mission statement at its core: “As long as everybody gives all that they have to give and we sing songs that touch the heart\, we’ll live on forever.” \n  \nIn 2022 they had a collaborative recording with Béla Fleck nominated for a Grammy . The nominated collaboration\, “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free\,” powerfully reimagines the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement originally made famous by Nina Simone. They also have had collaborative recordings and coinciding tours with both Marc Cohn and afro-pop duo Amadou & Mariam. In 2023 they garnered another Grammy nomination for Best Americana Single for ‘The Message’ featuring Black Violin.
