SUMMARY:Fall 2024 Poetry Workshops at the Left of Center Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Calling all beginning and advanced poets! \nJoin Left of Center and the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas for three free poetry workshops designed to engage both beginning and experienced writers in “ekphrastic poetry.” Ekphrastic poems are written in response to works of visual art\, and these three workshops will utilize Left of Center’s collections to help writers generate original poetry. \nPlease note: you will receive an email confirming that you have a spot in one\, two\, or all three workshops\, depending on available space. Please also note that the African Art Museum inside the Left of Center Art Gallery is only accessible by stairs. \nRead the descriptions below for each of the workshops\, then let us know which you’d like to attend. Please only sign up for those you can commit to\, as space is limited\, and we want to be sure everyone gets a chance! \n\nWorkshop 1 – Saturday\, Sept. 14\, 2024\, 1-3 p.m. – Join writer JM Huck for a multi-genre workshop experience utilizing visual art\, music\, and group discussion towards generating poetry. Writers will engage in guided conversation ahead of dedicated writing time towards creating their own original works.\nWorkshop 2 – Saturday\, Oct. 12\, 2024\,  1-3 p.m. – Join writer Sada Malumfashi to view Left of Center’s African Museum as a means of inspiration for your writing. Participants will practice ways to extend the visual language of a work of art into poetry. What does it mean to really look at art? What are the politics of looking? How can words help us to see?\nWorkshop 3 – Saturday\, Nov. 16\, 2024\, 1-3 p.m. – Join writer Lauren Gleave in the African Art Museum inside Left of Center Art Gallery. There\, writers will explore the work on display and generate ideas for poetic language inspired by their interactions with the art\, their movement through the space\, and the emotions that surround that experience of communing with visual art pieces. The workshop will then provide dedicated writing time and feedback for each writer from their peers.

SUMMARY:Full Scope Workshop - Matthew Mazzotta
DESCRIPTION:Full Scope Workshop for November will be a presentation by Public Artist Matthew Mazzotta\, The Architecture of Social Space: Creating Spaces of Critique Within the Places We Live. Matthew will talk about how he connects with communities to create the perfect public art piece. \nMatthew Mazzotta’s community-specific public projects integrate new forms of civic participation and social engagement into the built environment and reveal how the spaces we travel through and spend our time living within have the potential to become distinct sites for intimate\, radical\, and meaningful exchanges. Through his process\, each project starts by creating temporary public spaces for listening – ‘Outdoor Living Room’ – as a way to capture voices from local people that might not attend more formal meetings. Stemming from this approach are experiences that involve people from a range of backgrounds working together to create new models of living that contribute to local culture beyond the economic realm. \nThe discussion will be followed by a question-and-answer segment where attendees can ask Matthew about the topics covered. Announcements of current and future opportunities\, events\, and services will close out the workshop. Attendees will receive a copy of the presentation and announcements through email. This workshop will be recorded.

SUMMARY:Unexpected: A Black / White Portfolio
DESCRIPTION:Sierra Arts Riverside Gallery Presents E2 Photography \nA show of traditional black / white photographic work \nArtists Reception  Dec. 7\, 1-3:30 p.m. \nThe stark beauty of the high desert\, the imposing crest of the Sierra Nevada\, and the variety provided by a true four season environment. For all photographers these attributes offer an abundance of color photographic opportunities. \nOur vision offers a different way to be looking at color and the subjects within. We have narrowed our view in order to see beyond what is an expected photograph. When we are drawn into a scene that initially interests us\, we take time to look deeper and uncover the feelings that will make it a compelling photograph. \nHow do the light and shadow play with each other? How does an interesting foreground transition visually into the background? At this point we begin to see areas of color being simplified into grayscale. No color to cloud or change our minds about what the photograph represents.  Only light\, shadow and varying shades of gray bounded by the two dimensional box that it lives in. Now it becomes the “Unexpected: A Black / White Portfolio”. \nArtists website for event preview  www.e2-photography.com
