SUMMARY:Preview\, Artist Talk & Opening Reception: Homesickness: On Longing and Loss
DESCRIPTION:The College of Southern Nevada\, School of Arts and Letters\, Department of Fine Arts and Art Gallery Program would like to invite you to engage with artist and North Central College Assistant Professor of Art\, Whitney Sage this Thursday\, September 28 at 6pm as she participates in a special Preview\, Artist Talk\, and Opening Reception with refreshments in conjunction with her Artspace Gallery Exhibition\, Homesickness: On Longing and Loss. Homesickness: On Longing and Loss is on display now and will run through Saturday\, December 2\, 2023\, in the Artspace Gallery on the North Las Vegas Campus of the College of Southern Nevada. \nWhitney Sage earned her Bachelor’s degrees in Art Education and Painting from Miami University in Oxford\, Ohio and her M.F.A. in Studio Art from the Sam Fox School of Visual Art at Washington University in St. Louis. Her work\, which includes practices of painting\, drawing\, sculpture\, fibers and installation\, has previously been featured in solo exhibitions at Buckham Gallery\, Indiana University East\, Pump House Arts Center\, Workhouse Arts Center\, Art Reach Mid-Michigan\, ROY G BIV and Ripon College. A selection of Sage’s recent work has been featured in notable group exhibitions at UICA\, the Painting Center\, Superfront LA Gallery\, the Lexington Art League\, the Muskegon Museum of Art\, the Kennedy Art Museum and the Dennos Museum Center. Sage has been an artist-in-residence at the Vermont Studio Center\, Studios Midwest\, AIR Studio Paducah\, Wave Pool\, Millimetre Press and Popp’s Packing. Her creative work has been featured in a number of publications including Manifest Gallery’s INDA 14\, Refract Journal\, Hour Detroit Magazine\, WomanArts Quarterly Journal\, Newfound Journal\, Maake Magazine\, and the Post-Industrial Complex catalog\, published by the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit as a survey of makers in the Detroit area. \nWhen discussing her work\, Sage asserts\, “Homesickness: On Longing and Loss\, focuses its lens on the sprawling neighborhoods of Detroit and Highland Park\, Michigan. Stylistically modeled after tintype photography\, the work co-opts the visual iconography and traditions of landscape for its ability to reflect the larger cultural ideals and shifts of its time. Having grown up in suburban Detroit\, I’ve witnessed first-hand the region’s bellwether relevance to the ways our nation’s post-industrial economy\, geographic sprawl and affinity for consumption continues to leave behind communities in its wake. Through the depiction of failing or absent architecture\, the works address the many challenges facing urban and rural communities nationwide: the availability of safe\, affordable housing\, the maintenance of stable and dense neighborhoods\, and the disappearance of recognizable homeland and along with it\, the erasure of communal and familial histories.” \nThe CSN Artspace Gallery is free\, family friendly\, and open to the public. Gallery hours are from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The Artspace Gallery is upstairs above the main entrance lobby on the North Las Vegas campus located at 3200 E. Cheyenne Avenue\, one-mile East of I-15 North.    \nMore about Sage can be found on her website\, https://whitneysage.com/

SUMMARY:GEOGRAPHICAL DIVIDES: FINDING COMMON GROUND - Workshop\, Artist Talk & Reception for Artists
DESCRIPTION:Workshop\, Artist Talk & Reception for Artists\nSeptember 30! \n1 – 3pm · Workshop: Off the Cuff Screenprinting \n5 - 7pm · Talk Begins at 5:30pm \nKirk Robertson Gallery · Oats Park Art Center\n151 East Park Street · Fallon\, Nev. 89406\nGet Directions \nFor More Information\nCall 775-423-1440\ninfo@churchillarts.org \nGEOGRAPHICAL DIVIDES: FINDING COMMON GROUND\nGeographical Divides: Finding Common Ground examines Nevada’s unique visual culture. It is a state labeled with cultural myths like “Area 51\,” “The Biggest Little City in the World” and “Sin City” and one that commands the imagination of Postmodernism from the architecture of Las Vegas to the proliferation of Burning Man Festival held once a year. It is comprised of two major metropolitan communities— in the north and south— divided by 300 miles of vast desert. Nevada’s art communities are not separated by distance of travel alone. There are notable differences among artists throughout the state in what is important in their work\, most of which connects with where they live. This traversal of Nevada has also led to the realization of how little dialogue there is between artists of the two dominant communities—Reno and Las Vegas—not to mention the artists living in remote territories of the Nevada outback that are some- times overlooked. \nNevada artists live on different sides of a geographical divide\, however those lines are drawn. Calling upon the printmaker’s sense of community\, the sixteen artists featured in Geographical Divides: Finding Common Ground were invited to join in a series of collaborations that would explore these geographical and cultural differences in Nevada\, if such differences truly exist. The assembly of printmakers—eight from the north\, eight from the south—produced two prints from each collaboration. Each artist produced an initial plate that was sent to their collaborating partner for further surface and conceptual additions\, and then returned for completion. Visually exploring connections and disconnections between southern Nevada and northern Nevada cultural attitudes\, aesthetics and geographical distinctions—these sixteen artists communicated and visually responded to each other’s unique economic\, environmental\, political and social settings—further dissecting this notion of a splitting geography and/or communion of Nevada’s polarities. \nCollaborating artists include: Maria Arango\, Las Vegas/Lynn Schmidt\, Reno; Erik Beehn\, Las Vegas/Nolan Preece\, Reno; Bobbie Ann Howell\, Las Vegas/Galen Brown\, Carson City; Daryl DePry\, Las Vegas/Sharon Tetly\, Carson City; Keith Conley\, LasVegas/Sidne Teske\, Tuscarora; Anne M. Hoff\, Las Vegas/Vicki LoSasso\, Reno; Jeanne Voltura\, Las Vegas/Candace Nicol\, Reno; and Juan D. Varela\, Las Vegas/Ashlea Clark\, Reno.

SUMMARY:Art Reception: Find Your Folklife
DESCRIPTION:Nevada State University’s Office for the Arts is pleased to announce the NTI-Traveling Exhibition: Find Your Folklife  \n  \nExhibition Run:  \nAugust 28\, 2023 – October 20\, 2023  \nNevada State University \nGlenn & Ande Christenson School of Education Building (CEB)\, 2nd Floor \nHenderson\, NV 89002 \nMonday – Friday 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM \n  \nReception:  \nWednesday\, October 11\, 2023  \n6:00 -8:00 PM \nGlenn & Ande Christenson School of Education Building (CEB)\, 2nd floor  \n  \nHenderson\, NV 89002\, October 2\, 2023 – Nevada State University’s Office for the Arts presents\, Find Your Folklife\, an innovative photo exhibit exploring cultural identity. Curated by the Nevada Arts Council Folklife Program to illustrate the vitality of folklife\, folk arts\, and folk communities that are resident in Nevada. \n  \nThe exhibit features 22 photographs of Nevadans dressed to represent different cultural identities\, each paired with a photograph of the same person in “everyday” dress as they might appear at home\, work\, or enjoying recreational activities. These photo pairs have been combined on “lenticular two-flip” panels so that as the viewer approaches\, they see just one of the photos. As they begin to pass by the panel\, it “flips” to the other image as though by magic. The effect is created by interleaving the images on narrow strips that are refracted through an overlying lens to create the startling “two-flip” effect. Each image pair is accompanied by a statement in the model’s own words that speaks to some aspect of cultural community or identity. \n  \n“This exhibit is a fun way to think about who we are as Nevadans in the 21st century\,” exhibit curator Rebecca Snetselaar\, who also photographed the models for the exhibit\, said. “Cultural identity is complicated. Most of us identify with more than one cultural community and we may express different aspects of that depending on where we are or who we are with at any given time.” \n  \nFolklife\, folk arts\, and folklore all spring from cultural identity\, which comes from belonging to a social group. Family heritage — national or ethnic — often informs a person’s sense of self. Cultural identity also may derive from language\, gender\, religion\, age\, occupation\, and sense of place. Culture is something we share with others in a social group. It’s our folklife: our common values and beliefs\, the creative ways we express identity in a group\, the knowledge we share\, the objects that hold significance and meaning\, the activities we engage in as a community. \n  \nOn Wednesday\, October 11th reception attendees will also have the opportunity to meet Nevada Arts Council’s new Folklife Specialist\, Brad McMullen. In addition\, Nevada State University’s Foundation will provide a limited number of complimentary tickets for attendees to also attend the university’s interactive event that evening\, Scorpion Stroll\, which includes food and drinks.  \n  \n### \nThe Nevada Arts Council is part of the Nevada Division of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. Its mission is to enrich the cultural life of the state through leadership that preserves\, supports\, strengthens and makes excellence in the arts accessible to all Nevadans
