SUMMARY:A.V.A. Ballet Theatre and the Reno Phil's The Nutcracker
DESCRIPTION:The stage at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in Reno will be alive with a sugar plum fairy and dancing mice as A.V.A. Ballet Theatre presents the annual Nutcracker Ballet on Dec. 20\, 21\, and 22\, 2024. Artistic director Alexander Van Alstyne has choreographed an exciting rendition of the popular holiday ballet\, and the Reno Philharmonic Orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s moving score. Laura Jackson will be conducting the orchestra. Due to popular demand\, we will continue to have a fifth performance. \nPrincipal dancers who have performed with professional ballet companies such as Ballet West\, Kansas City Ballet and the Diablo Ballet will perform the leading roles along side a large cast of local talent. \nNutcracker performances will be held Friday\, Dec. 20 at 8 p.m.\, Dec. 21st at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.\, and Sunday\, Dec. 22 at noon and 5 p.m. at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Reno. Ticket prices are $30 to $65 with discounts for seniors and children. \nA special Sugar Plum party will be held after the Saturday and Sunday afternoon performances\, where children can meet the Nutcracker characters. \nA.V.A. DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Third Day of Kwanzaa in the spirit of UJIMA: to build and maintain our community together\, making our brothers’ and sisters’ problems our problems and solving them together. Kwanzaa is an African American and Pan-African holiday that celebrates family\, community and culture. Celebrated from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1\, its origins are in the first harvest celebrations of Africa from which it takes its name. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili\, a Pan-African language. UJIMA will be featuring the Girls & Boys Rites of Passage 11-week program graduation. \nThis program is presented in partnership with the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District.

SUMMARY:Photo Finished 2025
DESCRIPTION:Fourteen of Carson High School’s accomplished photography students have their work in Photo Finished 2025 at the Brick. \nPhoto Finished 2025\, a Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) student exhibition\, is in the Community Development Building (the Brick)\, 108 E. Proctor St.\, Carson City. It runs until March 20\, 2025. The Brick is open to the public\, Monday through Friday\, 8 a.m. – noon\, 1-4 p.m. The exhibition video tour will be online soon. \nThe participating students include: Hannah  Anaya\, Noah Bouza\, Kylie Carrigan\, Addison Connet\, Colin DeBord\, Lleremy Hernandez\, Elijah Locatelli\, Joshua Lopez\, Alejandra Lopez-Huazano\, Izzabelle Marriott\, Alexander Martinez\, Genesis Medina Santos\, Alexandera Ramirez\, and Angel Vega. \nWhen he photographed people for his “E. Washington Street” series\, Angel Vega also gave them cardboard and a marker\, interviewed them\, and shared their stories with viewers. Vega said\, he worked “getting to know the homeless individuals\, building trust\, and helping however I can. I always explain the project to them and take the picture when the time feels right.” A card with interview notes accompanies each photo in the exhibition. \nHannah Anaya did a street photography series based on the differences between Mexican and American cultures. Joshua Lopez’s Highway 50 landscapes focus on the forest-service cabins. Alexander Martinez series focuses on the relationship of young boys and how they interact. Alejandra Lopez-Huazano focused on often heavy emotional themes with her portraits and dark landscapes. Izzabelle Marriott took photos of urban sites inspired by classic horror films. Kylie Carrigan presents a series of self-portraits based on vices we have as human beings. Various modes of transportation were Elijah Locatelli’s subject. Alexandera Ramirez titled her series\, “The Art of Nature\,” where she focused on her connection to the natural world. Noah Bouza creatively photographed cars and car rims. Colin DeBord focused on the supernatural with his mysterious black and white photographs. Lleremy Hernandez’s  project focuses on the need for feeling emotions whether bad or good.  Genesis Medina Santos focuses on her journey through spirituality by using biblical verses to inspire portraiture\, and Addison Connet photographed the wonder and often times challenge of being an young female in this culture. \nPhotography teacher\, Matt Theilen\, explained the students’ assignment: “The Carson High School photography students are asked to create a 15-piece conceptual body of work in which all pieces must relate back to their central topic throughout the first semester. They are given few parameters\, other than that work must be acceptable for a high school aged audience\, must be cohesive\, and must be printed to 11×14 format. Students are asked to choose three to four of their 15 total pieces to enter the Photo Finished 2025 art show. The works are a collection from Advanced Photo II and Photo III students.” \nSharon Rosse\, CCAI Executive Director\, said “CCAI looks forward to this annual collaboration with Carson High and is delighted to again present work by these talented students. DESCRIPTION:The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art is proud to present Yoko Kondo Konopik: On Canvas. Spanning decades\, On Canvas is the first major museum exhibition to explore the practice of this Las Vegas-based abstract artist. Viewers will have an opportunity to see the full range of Konopik’s mature oeuvre\, encompassing paintings from the early 1980s to the present.\n\nTrained as a painter at ateliers in Tokyo and Paris\, Konopik has spent almost half a century refining her personal lexicon of minimalist curves and lines. Her abstractions respond swiftly to opportunities for mark-making\, finding humor in unexpected shape-shifts and rich moments of color. She draws inspiration from the concentrated finesse of hard-edge visionaries such as Ellsworth Kelly\, the strong palette of the abstract expressionist Sam Francis\, and the poise of Scandinavian design\, but asserts her independence from them all when she talks about her quest for a personal expression of compositional harmony —“a little world of poem and melody on canvas.”\n\nAbstraction\, for her\, is the most direct route to that harmony\, the one that allows the artist to have the maximum amount of freedom and control. She hopes viewers will take the opportunity to create a direct emotional connection to the fundamental elements of painting as she sees it: color\, shape\, and line.\n\n“I love colors because of its colors.\nI love lines because of its line.\nI love shapes because of its shapes.”\n—Yoko Kondo Konopik\n\nYoko Kondo Konopik: On Canvas will be on view in the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art’s East Gallery from Jan. 17-May 17\, 2025\, with an opening reception from 5–8 p.m. on the evening of Jan. 24. Curated by Elizabeth Resnick (professor emerita\, graphic design\, Massachusetts College of Art and Design)\, this exhibition draws on decades of design practice from around the globe to demand equity and dignity for all.\n\nTaking her title from both the women’s rights movement and an important 1995 speech by Hillary Rodham Clinton\, Resnick explains\, “This exhibition features posters that celebrate the vital role everyone should play in protecting and promoting human rights while actively challenging gender inequality and stereotypes\, advancing sexual and reproductive rights\, and protecting women and girls against brutality.\n\n‘In their collective visual voice\, they promote women’s empowerment and participation in society while challenging religious and cultural norms and patriarchal attitudes that restrict women from achieving their fullest potential.”\n\nSelected for the Marjorie Barrick Museum’s WorkShop Gallery space by curatorial organizers Sydney Galindo and Laura Solsona Plazaola\, these posters incorporate intersectional human rights issues such as climate change\, labor solidarity\, and Indigenous sovereignty\, while drawing attention to specific instances of rights violations such as femicides in Ciudad Juárez\, Mexico\, the Zan\, Zendegi\, Azadi (Women\, Life\, Freedom) movement in Iran\, and the post-Roe struggle for abortion access in the U.S. They span a wide range of design styles\, from humorous maximalist illustrations to streamlined icons and inventive typography.\n\nWomen’s Rights are Human Rights: International Posters on Gender-Based Inequality\, Violence\, and Discrimination will be on view in the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art’s WorkShop Gallery from Jan. 17 – May 17\, 2025\, with an opening reception from 5–8 p.m. on the evening of Jan. 24. The Marjorie Barrick Museum is open from Tuesday–Saturday\, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Entry is always free.\n\n\nAbout Sydney Galindo\nSydney Galindo\, a first-generation Filipina American of Visayan and Indigenous descent\, is dedicated to decolonizing the art world through her curatorial work. Her practice emphasizes indigenization and curatorial activism\, highlighting the voices and experiences of minority artists. Galindo holds a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree in museum studies\, intending to reshape the dialogue around art\, culture\, and representation.\n\nAbout Laura Solsona Plazaola\nLaura Solsona Plazaola is an emerging curator with a research-based practice. DESCRIPTION:The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art is proud to present Color Made\, an exhibition of work by artists who use color to define and reshape the world. Manipulating bright shades of blue\, red\, pink\, yellow\, and green across different mediums such as painting\, fabric sculpture\, and cast glass\, these artists establish spaces where they can create narratives and build community connections. By choosing to cover a surface with color—or by making the color and the surface indivisible—they experiment with the idea of painting\, turning the traditional painters’ canvas into an independent\, manipulable form and asking if other materials can play the same role.\n\nThis exhibition includes a special screening of Beck+Col’s Red Night\, an independent feature film set in a colorful world where five monsters come together to defend their queer chosen family against a violent intruder.\n\nColor Made includes art from the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art’s permanent collection (Jason Adkins\, Michael Batty\, Tim Bavington\, Chris Duncan\, Jacqueline Ehlis\, Ash Ferlito and Matt Taber\, Harold Paris\, Lyssa Park\, Heidi Schwegler\, Bettina Werner\, and Thomas Ray Willis)\, as well as guest artworks by Yoko Kondo Konopik\, Naes Pierrot\, and Beck+Col with Ching Ching Cheng\, Sapira Cheuk\, and Ofelia Marquez. The film Red Night features art by Tanya Brodsky\, Ching Ching Cheng\, Sapira Cheuk\, Jenny Eom\, Vanessa Holyoak\, Hea-Mi Kim\, Ofelia Marquez\, Minga Opazo\, Alicia Piller\, and Amia Yokoyama.\n\nColor Made will be on view in the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art’s West Gallery from Jan. 17–May 17\, 2025\, with an opening reception from 5–8 p.m. on the evening of Jan. 24. SUMMARY:TRANSMITTING FIGURES: EXPLORING HOW EMBODIMENT TRANSMITS KNOWLEDGE\, HISTORY\, AND MEANING
DESCRIPTION:Sapira Cheuk is an ink painter and installation artist. Born in Hong Kong and based in Las Vegas\, Nevada. Cheuk’s work often utilizes a blend of sumi and india ink\, symbolizing the mixture of her identities. Cheuk has exhibited in numerous exhibitions\, including those at the Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles\, Orange County Contemporary Art Center\, Center for Contemporary Art Texas\, Masur Museum\, The Netura Museum\, and Yellowstone Art Museum. Cheuk works for the Nevada Arts Council\, serves as the Art Editor for the museum of americana\, and teaches at the College of Southern Nevada. She received her Bachelor of Art at University of California\, Riverside and Master of Fine Arts from California State University\, San Bernardino. \nCheuk writes\, “I am interested in proprioception\, ways of knowing through the body\, and how these modes of knowledge reflect or internalize external experiences. My works seek out instances where the process of experiencing ultimately results in understanding and knowledge\, that stems from physical and bodily events. My interest originates from the dynamics of interpersonal memories\, and has since evolved into themes such as aesthetic labor\, and ownership; physical isolation\, and virtual connections; and cellular alterations through trauma\, and psychological recoveries. While these ideas tend to be wide-ranging\, my aesthetic choices are firmly based on ink and paper. As I was born in Hong Kong\, Chinese Sumi painting aesthetics and materials heavily influenced my practice. The ink used is a specific blend of soluble and insoluble inks to create the effects characteristic to my work. The smooth gradation and abrupt fractures that exist simultaneously in each figure represents my experiences as an immigrant\, negotiating two different cultures\, values\, and operating systems.” \nTransmitting Figures will culminate in a combined event involving presentations by Sapira Cheuk’s collaborators on the series. This event will include a Pangalay dance performance by Chloe Bernardo and a talk by Chinese historian Dr. Stephanie Montgomery. Afterward\, a short discussion will follow\, on themes of embodiment that connect these different disciplines. \nDr. Stephanie Montgomery’s areas of research include modern China\, the history of gender\, sexuality\, and the body; women’s history; the history of criminality and penology; and the history of science\, medicine\, technology\, and drugs. \nChloe Bernardo is a first-generation immigrant from the Philippines\, holding a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Graphic Design and Media from University of Nevada\, Las Vegas. Presently\, she serves as a museum designer at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art\, where her multifaceted role extends to marketing initiatives and the creation of essential museum materials\, reflecting her commitment to enhancing the visitor experience and fostering artistic appreciation.
