SUMMARY:“Earth Rise\,” by Mark Brandvik Public Art Dedication in Moapa Valley Community Center
DESCRIPTION:Join us and Commissioner Marilyn Kirkpatrick next Wednesday\, November 1st from 5 PM to 7 PM for the dedication of “Earth Rise\,” a public art sculpture by Mark Brandvik. \nLocation:\nMoapa Valley Community Center\n320 N. Moapa Valley Boulevard\nOverton\, Nevada 89040 \n“Earth Rise” by Mark Brandvik serves as a gateway to Michael Heizer’s renowned land art piece\, “Double Negative\,” located 8 miles east of the Moapa Valley Community Center. The sculpture’s captivating composition of steel forms pays homage to Heizer’s groundbreaking work\, reflecting the forces of excavation and erosion. It also draws inspiration from the nearby landscape’s landforms and archaeology\, while celebrating the American spirit of discovery from the Space Age. \nThe Moapa Valley Community played an invaluable role in the creation of “Double Negative”. Now\, over 50 years later “Earth Rise”\, the sculpture is a tribute to their contribution. Situated on the property of the Moapa Valley Community Center\, the artwork features subtle glyphs etched into the weathered steel\, honoring the Valley and its people who have warmly welcomed art enthusiasts from around the world for over half a century. \nMark Brandvik\, a native of Las Vegas\, has a BFA from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, Brandvik has received numerous grants\, commissions\, and residencies for his art. His work has been exhibited extensively across the United States\, Canada\, and Europe. In addition to his art practice\, Brandvik has been teaching studio art since 1997 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, and the College of Southern Nevada. He currently resides and maintains a studio in downtown Las Vegas. \nMarkbrandvik.com

SUMMARY:Writing Across the Rainbow
DESCRIPTION:Writing Across the Rainbow is a virtual class via Zoom that provides the participants a unique opportunity to work with multiple writers in creating their own story.  A different queer writer will be brought in each week to co-facilitate and add trust to the class.\n•Week One will focus on the art of haiku and poetry writing using published examples as templates to write original works. Each participant will write their poems during class to various prompts\, and we will read the poems to each other with great affirmation.\n•Week Two will be on flash fiction and short stories using published examples as a template to their original work. We will begin with the writing prompt: Write about your scariest experience as a queer person or tell us about your happiest experience as a queer person. We will end with readings and affirmations.\n•Week Three will include creating a soul collage using it as a writing prompt.\n\nThis workshop is supported in part by the Nevada Arts Council\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, and in partnership with Sierra Arts Foundation.\n\nInstructor Jacci Turner is the author of thirteen indie books for middle grade children and young adults. She also has a book published by Harper Collins for grownups and has recently published her first non-fiction book. Jacci teaches writing classes through her local community college\, her three writing groups\, and with grants from the Nevada Arts Council\, and Sierra Arts Foundation\, where she is on the artist’s rosters. Jacci’s middle grade fiction\, Bending Willow\, was chosen by librarians to represent Nevada at the National Book Festival. Several of her books have been finalists in the Wishing Shelf Book awards. Jacci is a retired therapist\, enjoying more time to run a non-profit and write.

SUMMARY:On Instinct: New Work by Ashley Gottlieb
DESCRIPTION:“On Instinct” is an exhibition of new work by Reno-based artist Ashley Gottlieb. The exhibition will run from November 4 to December 31\, 2023 at the South Valleys Library Art Gallery in Reno\, NV. \nThe public is invited to an artist reception on Wednesday\, November 15 from 5:30-6:30 pm at the South Valleys Library. \nLearn more at the show at https://www.ashleygottlieb.com/portfolio-1/oninstinct \nContact the artist with inquires at hello@ashleygottlieb.com \nArtist Statement for “On Instinct”: \n“On Instinct” is a collection of artworks developed using an automatic drawing technique that allows my primal urge to create freewheeling\, nonsensical shapes to run wild\, all while continuing to take a thoughtful approach to uncover the composition’s balance through color. What results is a personal journey of instinctual shape-making combined with audacious color palettes\, forming unexpected and energetic arrangements. \nThis series emerged as a response to frustration within the initial stages of my creative process for my next series. I had been grappling with a self-imposed expectation that my work needed more polish or less “strangeness\,” which only led to creative pressure and overthinking every decision. This led to a painful sketching process and rather boring compositions. I decided to stop forcing square pegs into round holes and instead followed my gut to sketch something from a natural state of flow. What transpired was exhilarating – playfulness\, movement\, energy\, and an elusive balance among the diverse shapes\, all while suggesting a hint of instability. These traits\, in conjunction with color\, remain at the heart of my ongoing artistic exploration and ignite my inner creativity. \nIn addition to my exploration of shape\, balance and color\, I aim to transport the viewer to an alternate realm\, one that is uniquely personal to each individual. While I have no specific realm in mind\, I envision it as a joyful and playful space. In many ways\, the artworks in “On Instinct” serve as psychological association tests. I invite you to embark on a personal journey when viewing each piece. Where does it take you? What do you see? Don’t overthink it. Just go with your instinct.

SUMMARY:Performing Arts Series presents Krakauer & Tagg’s Square Peg Throwdown
DESCRIPTION:The Performing Arts Series presents Krakauer & Tagg’s Square Peg Throwdown — a good vibes explosion that is everything we need today. Spearheaded by David Krakauer and producer Kathleen Tagg\, Square Peg Throwdown showcases an international crew of high octane musicians. Square Peg Throwdown’s influences are global\, but the sound they create collectively has produced something uniquely their own. Familiar dance forms such as Polka or Square Dance never sounded this way before\, with hand drumming\, propulsive electronic beats\, lyrics calling for catharsis and positivity\, deep grooves and Krakauer’s wailing clarinet crying out for us to join together\, celebrate and feel the power in our aliveness. “Ebullient clarinet wizard” (Time Out NY) Krakauer is the Godfather to Tagg’s quirky keys & production\, Iranian dynamo Martin Shamoonpour’s hand drumming\, jazz guru Jerome Harris’ driving bass\, rapper Sarah MK’s trenchant rhymes & oud- and guitar-meister Yoshie Fruchter’s sinuous lines. In addition\, Jeremy Flower and Selwa Abd (aka Bergsonist) produced beats to round out the sound for layering with the live performance.

Three completely unique short films\, a top secret immersive experience\, live music\, photo ops\, filmmaker Q&A\, cash bar\, limited (first come\, first serve) goodie bags and opportunities to chat with the cast\, crew and filmmakers. \nReno\, NV raised filmmakers Cody Hamilton (co-founder of Storyled Productions) and Patrick Riglesburger will be screening their powerful projects at the Nevada Museum of Art on November 11\, 2023.  Doors open at 6:30 pm\, screening begins at 7:30 pm.\nTickets on sale at https://teensyleader.ticketspice.com/storyled-screening \nTunnel Rat is an award winning short that gives the audience a glimpse of the terror and torment that post-Vietnam PTSD caused one soldier.  This impactful experience will no doubt leave the audience wondering how he came to be in this situation and why he wasn’t able to get help.  This is why Storyled Productions is working to bring the feature film version of Tunnel Rat into fruition.  You don’t have to go through war to be able to relate to the struggles of mental health. \nSerial Confessions is a Web Series that was started during the height of the pandemic. This is a mockumentary-style series that follows the antics of a serial killer. Audiences may catch up on the first four episodes by visiting https://www.storyled.com/serial-confessions. At the screening we will get to experience the exciting\, hilarious and sometimes gruesome\, 2-part series finale. This is a finale people will definitely be talking about! \nWAIT was a short film finalist in Reno’s very own Cordillera International Film Festival for Best Nevada Film. It was also just screened at the famous Chinese Theatre in Hollywood as an official selection of the Silicon Beach Film Festival. It is a powerful coming-of-age story that follows a girl and her dad\, from innocence to one heartbreaking turning point. Will she learn to navigate her emotions\, with the help of a stranger\, one early morning in a hospital waiting room? \nPlease be in contact for photos\, interviews with the filmmakers and tickets to the screening.
