SUMMARY:Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change: March 2026
DESCRIPTION:Mark DeGarmo Dance (MDD) broadcasts the 2nd salon of its 16th annual Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change (VSPS) 2026\, exploring the theme “Dance & Social Change” Thursday\, March 5th\, 2026\, at 4 p.m. PST via a Live Online Interactive Zoom Broadcast. * \nMDD’s salon Thursday\, March 5th is a unique evening of original movement and dance performance works-in-process with facilitated audience reflection. Curator and facilitator Mark DeGarmo shares: “VSPS is an opportunity to view and contribute to works-in-process of under-recognized dance and movement artists that break\, cross\, or don’t recognize boundaries; stir up the mix; and face global issues across cultures\, countries\, and continents.” The March 5th salon features Audrey Baran (NC)\, Nick Daniels (PA)\, Marianna Koytsan (NYC)\, and (Otredanza compañia artística LGBTI de Medellín) Alexis Restrepo (Antioquia\, Colombia). The artists will present a range of works-in-process exploring the VSPS 2026 theme “Dance and Social Change.” Audrey Baran focuses on mass shootings\, school shootings\, and the call to action against preventable violence. Nick Daniels explores technology’s impact on communication\, civility\, and memory. Marianna Koytsan reflects on community interconnectedness\, solidarity\, and resilience. Alexis Restrepo reimagines Colombian folkloric dance through queer and experimental aesthetics\, and addresses vulnerability\, resilience\, and social transformation. \nAbout MDD’s March VSPS Artists \nAudrey Baran is a Charlotte\, NC-based dance artist and Artistic/Executive Director of Baran Dance. She holds an MFA in Dance from Hollins University and a BA in Dance with a Graduate Certificate in Anti-Racism in Urban Education from UNC Charlotte. Her work has been featured with Joffrey Ballet’s Winning Works (2022) and Charlotte Ballet’s Innovative: Direct from the LAB. A 500-hour Registered Yoga Teacher and MUNZ FLOOR® coach\, she centers movement and mindfulness across diverse bodies. \nNick M. Daniels is a celebrated Pittsburgh\, PA-based choreographer\, multimedia artist\, and the founding Artistic Director of The D.A.N.A. Movement Ensemble (Dancers Against Normal Actions)\, a company he launched in 1991 to confront and challenge societal norms through movement. A graduate of Slippery Rock University with a BFA in Dance\, Daniels has been celebrated as a Pittsburgh Cultural Treasure and recognized as a pioneer in exploring themes of race\, sexuality\, and identity in performance. \nMarianna Koytsan is a New York City–based street-style and contemporary dancer originally from Russia\, who has been performing locally since 2012. Her work has been featured at iconic venues including City Center\, Barnard College\, LaGuardia Performing Arts Center\, Little Island\, and Dance Parade NYC. She is a founding member of Neta-Kinetics\, a dynamic dance company. The company builds intensely physical\, character-driven worlds that weave together the diverse movement backgrounds of its artists.  \nFounded in Medellín in 2010\, Otredanza Compañía Artística LGBTI (Antioquia\, Colombia) blends Colombian folkloric dance with experimental and queer performance to celebrate diversity and foster social change. With works like ¡Vihva la Vihda!\, Tránsitos\, Marik Folclórik\, and Mi Vida es un Torbellino\, the company has toured Argentina\, Mexico\, Costa Rica\, and Ecuador. As the first LGBTI company to join Medellín’s iconic Flower Parade\, Otredanza marks 15 years of resilience\, innovation\, and cultural activism. \nTickets on Eventbrite: By donation. \nIf this is not possible for your economic situation\, contact us at least 24 hours in advance at info@markdegarmodance.org with the reason for your request so you can join us.  \nSuggested donations: \nSalsa: $10 \nStep: $15 \nBreak: $20 \nImprov: $50 \nAerial: $100 \nEventbrite: https://bit.ly/4azpcXl     \n  \n*Zoom Link will be sent to attendees by 5:00 PM ET the day of the performance from info@markdegarmodance.org. The 2026 series’ works represent a range of artist and movement approaches locally\, nationally and internationally. Featured on February 5 was a piece about the global water crisis and melting ice caps (Carolyn Pampalone Rabbers; Stevensville\, MI). On April 2\, two of the 4 works include a performance exploring the struggles of India’s LGBTQ community and family abandonment (Sudeshna Dey; West Bengal\, India)\, and a duet examining the challenges of communication and connection in modern life (Yan Longdan; Chongqing\, China). \nAbout MDD’s Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change \nFounded in 2010\, MDD’s Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change is a conversation facilitated by curator\, choreographer\, and scholar Dr. Mark DeGarmo with audiences and diverse global dance makers presenting works-in-process. It is a unique opportunity to demystify the creation of choreography and to enjoy a wide range of performance approaches\, genres\, and styles. VSPS presents under-represented and under-recognized dance makers across New York City and State\, the USA\, and internationally. Since February 2019\, MDD has presented in 42 salons\, including 2 Virtual International Arts Festivals\, featuring 566 total artists from 23 states and 31 countries. Past audiences and dance makers have remarked: \n“The salon was a warm\, welcoming\, positive environment!” \n“I loved the convenience of watching the performance on Zoom!” \nAbout Mark DeGarmo Dance \nMark DeGarmo Dance began operations in 1982\, incorporated in 1987\, and celebrates its 39th anniversary in 2026 as a leading New York City nonprofit dance organization located in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and is a nonprofit anchor tenant at the Clemente Soto Velez Center. President Barack Obama commended DeGarmo and MDD for your service to your community and the nation. The National Endowment for the Arts deemed MDD’s NYC dance education program for under-resourced public elementary students living under the federal poverty rate “a national model.” National Dance Education Organization research shows that a mere 1-7% of USA elementary schools have such a dance education program as our Partnerships in Literacy through Dance & Creativity. \n                           \nhttps://markdegarmodance.org \n  \nFollow Mark DeGarmo Dance on Facebook\, Instagram\, LinkedIn\, YouTube\, and Vimeo.  \n  \nOur programs are supported\, in part\, by private and public funds from American Online Giving Foundation; Jody and John Arnhold; Benevity; Frances and Benjamin Benenson Foundation; Bernheim Foundation; Blackbaud Giving Fund; Lisa and Dick Cashin; PJ and Dawn Dearden; Rev. SUMMARY:Honoring the Women Who've Shaped Us: A Writing Workshop with Jillian Makoutz
DESCRIPTION:Join local poet Jillian Makoutz from Grass and Sky Press for a poetry workshop that encourages you to honor a special woman in your life. We’re delighted to welcome Makoutz for this special celebration of International Women’s Day. \nWe’ll begin with a discussion about the process of honoring a woman in your life\, different ways you can approach that concept\, and some writing prompts to get your creativity flowing. Makoutz will also share a few of her own poems on the subject as she teaches. \nThen\, we’ll move into writing time as you create an original poem or written piece that honors a woman in your life that has shaped who you are. You may find it meaningful to bring a photo or some sort of memorabilia of the woman you are honoring to inspire you. This isn’t a requirement! \nAfter writing\, we’ll take time at the end of the class for those who would like to read their pieces aloud. \nAll materials are provided\, including a journal and blackwing pencil for all your writing needs\, so just plan to bring yourself\, a memento (if you’d like!)\, and maybe some Kleenex. You’ll also receive a signed copy of Jillian Makoutz’s book\, Four Seasons in the Sierra. \nYoung guests junior high age and above are welcome to attend!

SUMMARY:Paul West in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Paul West is more than a musician—he’s a modern-day troubadour. With roots in Texas and a childhood raised in the beauty of California’s Central Coast\, West brings a lived-in honesty to every performance. His journey has taken him from the shores of Maui to the heart of Las Vegas\, where he’s now making waves on stages like Jason Aldean’s and Blake Shelton’s Ole Red. His songs reflect the landscapes that have shaped him and his live shows—backed by some of Las Vegas’ best local country players—are a mix of heartfelt storytelling and are a testament to the power of following one’s passion against all odds. Classic country roots. A dash of vintage rock. And a performance you won’t want to miss.

SUMMARY:The Future in Rearview: Stories from the Edge of Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:Nevada Humanities continues its partnership with the Desert Research Institute on Curiosity Lab by DRI—a series of events in Reno and Las Vegas that brings together storytellers from science\, the humanities\, and the arts to illuminate our shared connection to the state of Nevada. \nJoin us for an evening that weaves together water\, memory\, innovation\, and imagination—exploring how the choices we make today ripple into the future. While the 1997 flood offers a powerful point of reflection\, this program looks beyond a single event to examine Nevada’s evolving relationship with water through science\, personal story\, and creative practice. \nFrom the hidden water demands of emerging technologies and energy growth\, to a fifth-generation farmer’s journey into groundwater science\, to the transformative power of creativity in science education\, our storytellers reveal how curiosity and lived experience shape the way we understand and steward our world. \nCome discover how stories—both personal and collective—can deepen insight\, spark connection\, and help illuminate the path forward. \nRefreshments and cocktails from 10 Torr Distillery and Brewery will be provided. \nFor more information about the speakers at this Curiosity Lab event\, please visit the DRI website.

SUMMARY:Classix Series | Mendolssohn Violin Concerto
DESCRIPTION:SHOWTIMES: \nSaturday\, March 21\, 2026: Doors 6 p.m.\, Concert 7:30 p.m.  \nSunday\, March 22\, 2026: Doors 2:30 p.m.\, Concert 4 p.m.  \nLike a great masterpiece shaped by time and intellect\, the Reno Phil embarks on the pursuit of knowledge\, where music unfolds with curiosity\, discovery\, and profound insight. At the heart of the evening is Nathan Amaral\, the first prize winner of the 2024 Sphinx Competition\, whose artistry illuminates Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto—a work of exquisite elegance and fiery virtuosity\, as if the violin itself is searching for truth in every soaring phrase. The journey begins with Autumn Maria Reed’s Robin’s Eye View\, a vivid and imaginative exploration of the world from above. The night reaches its pinnacle with Brahms’ Symphony No. 1\, a work Robert Schumann once prophesied as part of Beethoven’s legacy\, declaring that Brahms\, wielding his “magic wand\,” would reveal “wondrous glimpses into the secret world of the spirits.” From its stormy opening to its triumphant\, hymn-like finale\, the symphony wrestles with struggle and revelation\, culminating in an exultant resolution—a testament to the brilliance that emerges when passion and intellect collide.   \nON THE PROGRAM  \nAutumn Maria Reed Robin’s Eye View\n Felix Mendelssohn Violin Concerto op. 64 in E minor  \n Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 1 op. 68 in C minor     \nTICKET INFORMATION   \nTickets for 2025-26 Classix Series concerts at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts can only be purchased at this time as part of a Classix 6-concert subscription package.
