The artists in this show are showing Blackness without any conditions or stipulations. We will also be featuring poetry\, live music\, food\, refreshments\, and a photobooth! This is one event you don’t want to miss! \nThis exhibition was juried by Claytee White\, the inaugural director of the Oral History Research Center at UNLV Libraries. With her extensive experience in collecting the history of Las Vegas through the memories of long-time residents\, she brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the selection process. Her oral history projects\, which include Early Las Vegans\, Latinx\, Asian American Pacific Islanders\, Jews\, and African Americans\, have contributed immensely to preserving the diverse narratives that shape our community. \nBlack Life Ordinary features the following artists and performers: \nSamuel Akem\, Biya the Painter\, Dyron Boyd\, Karen Buford\, Tamara Carter\, Sherell Chillik\, X. Darvi\, Karla Ely\, LaRon Emcee\, Nancy Erskine\, Stasia Fisher\, Pablo Gonzalez Flores\, Julia Gonzalez Hall\, Charles Hobert Jr.\, Cindy Jackson\, Anthony Johnson\, Ken Kammal\, K. Marie\, Tony C. DESCRIPTION:18 year old Angelina studied primarily the Jazz greats\, but she has covered more than 80 singers from nearly every genre\, and she writes her own original songs\, which are various forms of Retro-Pop. SUMMARY:Pitching Your Work to Publications: A Workshop with Tajja Isen
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nThis hybrid seminar/workshop on pitching to publications will operate in two parts: In the first hour\, we will discuss what makes a strong pitch; how that varies depending on the type of story or outlet where you’re sending your work (newspaper\, magazine\, literary journal\, etc.); and analyze a few (anonymized) examples of successful and unsuccessful pitches to different publications to get a clearer sense of what works vs. what doesn’t. \nAfter a short break\, the second hour will be workshop-based: A number of participants will submit a 2-3 paragraph pitch in advance of the meeting and indicate whether they are open to circulating their pitch to the group for discussion (with the caveat that we may not have time to get through everyone’s pitches during the session). Regardless of whether writers want their work discussed in the workshop\, all participants will receive written feedback on their pitches.  \n**There are also a limited number of spots available to attend the session without submitting work beforehand—there’s an option to indicate that preference in the form below. \nTajja Isen is the author of Some of My Best Friends: Essays on Lip Service\, named a Best Book of the Year by Electric Literature\, The Globe and Mail\, CBC Books\, and Daily Hive. As an editor\, she has worked at Catapult and The Walrus\, and she is co-editor of the essay anthology The World as We Knew It: Dispatches from a Changing Climate. She has written for The Atlantic\, Vulture\, Time\, and Longreads\, among other outlets. Her next book is a memoir on mentorship and ambition. She is a Spring 2024 Shearing Fellow at Black Mountain Institute at UNLV. \n\n

SUMMARY:Apex Concerts: SPA Trio
DESCRIPTION:  \nHistoric recordings of some of the great singers of yesteryear include numerous performances of salon type songs that included an obbligato instrument. Some of these pairings included Enrico Caruso with Mischa Elman\, John McCormack with Fritz Kreisler\, Marian Anderson with William Primrose\, Alma Gluck with her husband Efrem Zimbalist\, as well as Bing Crosby and Jascha Heifetz! Susanna Phillips\, Paul Neubauer and Anne-Marie McDermott continue this tradition with SPA. Zachary Lewis at The Plain Dealer (Cleveland) sums it up: “But it wasn’t just the lineup\, which included the remarkable pianist Anne-Marie McDermott\, that made the evening so special. Also unique was the repertoire itself\, a fetching blend of art and parlor songs from all over 19th- and 20th-century Europe. Phillips herself required zero assistance. A singer known for starring roles at New York’s Metropolitan Opera\, she proved a singular authority\, brandishing a golden\, powerful instrument and treating each song to generous servings of eloquence and feeling. But how much better to hear Phillips in tandem with Neubauer\, a former principal violist of the New York Philharmonic\, and witness the gorgeous dovetailing of the viola’s warm\, expressive tone with that of the human voice\, its closest musical relation. At times\, the two were almost indistinguishable.” For more information visit www.unr.edu/apex
