SUMMARY:“Backyard Radiance: Photos and Videos of the Marvelous/Mundane" by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier
DESCRIPTION:Reno\, NV – The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Backyard Radiance\,” a solo exhibition by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier. The show runs from March 25 – May 17\, 2024\, showcasing photographs by Lanier that embrace both the marvelous and the mundane. \nThe artist reception will take place on Tuesday\, April 2\, from 5 – 7 p.m. City of Reno Poet Laureate\, Jesse James Ziegler\, will join Lanier in a collaborative and poetic performance. Admission to the exhibition and reception is free and open to the public. \nOver the past twelve years\, Lanier has been posting almost daily photos from his life on Instagram\, converting it to a mobile gallery (of sorts). For this exhibition\, he draws from this archive\, bringing the digital photographs back into the physical realm. Lanier’s images often feel like echoes\, something that seems both familiar and new. Each one is well composed\, providing an enjoyable artistic image. Rather than alienating us through aesthetic formality\, the familiarity of the ordinary creeps in\, inviting us to reflect on our own marvelous/mundane moments. \nAs a window into this process\, Lanier shares\, “I intend “Backyard Radiance” to be a very local\, very idiosyncratic homage to the ordinary\, the day-to-day – which\, when attended to with a certain intention or reverence\, becomes something perhaps a little marvelous.” \nChris Lanier is a Teaching Professor of Digital Art at the University of Nevada\, Reno\, teaching both at UNR Lake Tahoe and the Reno campus. He has worked in a variety of media\, including multimedia performance\, digital animation\, web production\, and comics. His work has been displayed\, performed and projected in New York\, San Francisco\, Japan\, Canada\, Britain\, Mexico and Serbia; his animation has screened at Sundance\, and won the Grand Prize for Internet Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. \nhttps://www.instagram.com/chrislanier

SUMMARY:The Quality of Life
DESCRIPTION:From award-winning writer Jane Anderson comes this “magnetic work of theater” (The San Francisco Chronicle) filled with compassion and humor. Dinah and Bill\, a devout\, church-going couple from the Midwest are struggling to keep their lives intact after the loss of their daughter. Dinah is compelled to reconnect with her left-leaning cousins in Northern California who’re going through their own trials. Jeannette and Neil have lost their home to a wildfire and Neil has cancer. However they seem to have accepted their situation with astounding good humor\, living in a yurt on their burn site and celebrating life with hits of pot and glasses of good red wine. The couples clash over their beliefs about life\, death\, and religion\, but do so with a healthy dose of humor and heart leading to some hilarious and poignant moments \nDirected by: Alexandra Frankel & Scott Hernandez  \nCAST \nMoira Bengochea as Dinah \nRod Hearn as Bill \nLa Ronda Etheridge as Jeanette \nCorbett Harrison as Neil \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nApril 12\, 13*\, 18\, 19\, 20\, 25\, 26\, & 27 @ 7:30pm \nApril 14\, 21**\, & 28† @ 2pm \n*denotes PAY-WHAT-YOU-WISH performance \n**denotes talk back performance  \n† denotes captioned performance

SUMMARY:The Dysfunction of Food: On Food That Isn’t Beautiful or Comforting or Delicious with Kim Foster
DESCRIPTION:Kim Foster\, James Beard Award-winning Author of the forthcoming The Meth Lunches: The Care and Feeding of a Drug Addict\, St. Martin’s Press. \nIn this lecture\, Kim Foster will examine the ways food can signify and complicate dysfunction in Las Vegas\, for both individuals and communities – those with empty tables\, and those with full plates. \nWhat does food mean to people in addiction? Or psychosis? Or in jail? Or for people who don’t have kitchens? What should it mean to the rest of us? \nMost of us think about food as a conduit for connection it’s a cliché now: “Food brings us together” and “Food connects us.” The messages are everywhere. A sea of perfectly constructed social media food images floods our feeds daily. It’s all beautiful\, heavily curated\, intentional\, and privileged. The people eating are happy\, smiling\, and having a ball. It’s a monoculture of food happiness. Foster is a contributor to this culture as a food writer. \nBut food is also a conduit for disconnection\, stress\, family trauma\, and workplace abuse. In families\, the table\, the eating together\, the passing of plates may hold discomfort\, anxiety\, and anger. It brings up things that can\, in other environments\, be let go. For others\, the table holds scarcity\, an annihilating reminder of their poverty. Others still have food on their table\, but no one sitting next to them to share it. \nFood can be a way to control. And punish. And abuse. And a means to force people to conform. And\, there is having no food at all. \nFood is often a litmus test. What we are eating and how we are eating tells us something integral about how we are doing\, and what our lives are like. \nCo-sponsored by the Black Mountain Institute.
