SUMMARY:“All That Glitters” Beck Baumann
DESCRIPTION:City of Reno City Hall \nMetro Gallery\, First floor \nJuly 29 – Sept. 20\, 2024 \nReception: Tuesday\, Aug. 27\, 2024\, 5-7 p.m. \n  \nMetro Gallery hosts sequin sculpture artist Beck Baumann “All That Glitters.” The body of work exhibits over 12 sequin sculpture pieces from varying projects spanning over three years. Each piece captures your eyes through the vibrant use of color and sparkle that depicts everyday objects from an ear-shaped handbag\, all the way to delectable food plates. \n“Sequins are everywhere. They manage to look both cheap or expensive\, depending on the situation. Little kids sport them on their backpacks and sneakers\, and they add glitter to couture gowns where they’re sewn on\, one by one. These little plastic discs come in wild colors and muted tones\, and the colors are hard to pin down because they change with the light. Sequins are flexible and rigid\, cloth and armor\, cuttable and bendable. I see no end to their possibilities\, and that is what keeps me interested in their potential. Plus\, sequins just look cool” – Beck Baumann \nBeck Baumann (b.1975) is a mixed media artist with a special focus on sequins who makes her home in Reno\, Nevada. Beck’s whimsical sequin sculptures draw from childhood memories and a joyful nostalgia. The word that most often comes to mind is FUN. She likes to combine unexpected elements from everyday objects to create things never seen before. Her inspiration comes from that childhood place when the world felt strange\, scary\, and full of wonder. \nBaumann’s work is a blending of sculpture and wall art that is primarily covered in sequins. She incorporates trashed Styrofoam and thrifted and recycled materials into her pieces whenever possible. Her husband\, Robert Baumann\, is her fabricator and collaborator\, and he also creates custom wood frames for her art. \nBeck’s creative journey began when she started taking graphic design classes at the age of 35. After completing her degree\, she spent several years writing and illustrating children’s books and a graphic novel. Then\, she moved onto ‘painting’ with seed beads and yarn\, which became the gateway for working with sequins\, her primary medium. \nFor more information\, see her website: beckbaumann.com \n— \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. Metro Gallery is open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.  to 4 p.m. The gallery is accessible through City Hall’s ground floor entrance on Virginia Street. Parking is available in the City Hall parking garage (NW corner of First and Center Streets). Parking validation can be found inside City Hall. SUMMARY:Canceled: Sagebrush to Sandstone: Cyanotype Workshop with Megan Berner
DESCRIPTION:EVENT IS CANCELED. \nThe cyanotype is an early photographic printing process that uses sunlight and water to create images. Cyanotype images are deep\, cyan-blue\, and were used in the original blueprint process. In this workshop led by visual artist Megan Berner\, participants will create original photograms by arranging objects on sensitized paper. Using natural and found objects to make their prints\, participants will learn how to prepare their own cyanotype paper and have an opportunity to experiment with the process. Participants are welcome to bring small objects that can be used to create images. Leaves\, plants\, lace\, ribbon\, anything with an interesting shape will work well. We will also provide supplies and some objects that participants can use. \nThis workshop will be conducted outside. Please plan accordingly and wear weather-appropriate clothing. All participants will receive a copy of Sagebrush to Sandstone: A Humanities Guide to Outdoor Nevada. \nSagebrush to Sandstone is a series of creative gatherings and events that highlight the arts and humanities alongside Nevada nature\, produced by Nevada Humanities\, and supported with funding by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

SUMMARY:No Charity in the Wilderness - Reading by Shaun Griffin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a reading by Shaun Griffin\, Nevada’s Poet Laureate\, from his new book of poems\, No Charity in the Wilderness. \nNo Charity in the Wilderness is a long journey into the new American West. From the southern border to the isolating two-lane highways in the desert\, this collection is a prayer of reconciliation with so much that troubles us … \n“No Charity in the Wilderness should loft Griffin’s literary reputation into company with William Stafford\, Gary Snyder\, and Annie Dillard\, as he is clearly one of the most powerful and spiritual voices of the new American West and beyond. These new poems are a conscience for our world.”\n—Douglas Unger\, author of Leaving the Land and Voices from Silence

SUMMARY:Fall 2024 Poetry Workshops at the Left of Center Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Calling all beginning and advanced poets! \nJoin Left of Center and the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas for three free poetry workshops designed to engage both beginning and experienced writers in “ekphrastic poetry.” Ekphrastic poems are written in response to works of visual art\, and these three workshops will utilize Left of Center’s collections to help writers generate original poetry. \nPlease note: you will receive an email confirming that you have a spot in one\, two\, or all three workshops\, depending on available space. Please also note that the African Art Museum inside the Left of Center Art Gallery is only accessible by stairs. \nRead the descriptions below for each of the workshops\, then let us know which you’d like to attend. Please only sign up for those you can commit to\, as space is limited\, and we want to be sure everyone gets a chance! \n\nWorkshop 1 – Saturday\, Sept. 14\, 2024\, 1-3 p.m. – Join writer JM Huck for a multi-genre workshop experience utilizing visual art\, music\, and group discussion towards generating poetry. Writers will engage in guided conversation ahead of dedicated writing time towards creating their own original works.\nWorkshop 2 – Saturday\, Oct. 12\, 2024\,  1-3 p.m. – Join writer Sada Malumfashi to view Left of Center’s African Museum as a means of inspiration for your writing. Participants will practice ways to extend the visual language of a work of art into poetry. What does it mean to really look at art? What are the politics of looking? How can words help us to see?\nWorkshop 3 – Saturday\, Nov. 16\, 2024\, 1-3 p.m. – Join writer Lauren Gleave in the African Art Museum inside Left of Center Art Gallery. There\, writers will explore the work on display and generate ideas for poetic language inspired by their interactions with the art\, their movement through the space\, and the emotions that surround that experience of communing with visual art pieces. The workshop will then provide dedicated writing time and feedback for each writer from their peers.

SUMMARY:A Glimpse Back
DESCRIPTION:Carson City\, Nevada — Capital City Arts Initiative is delighted to present work by the late artist\, Robert Morrison\, in the “A Glimpse Back” exhibition. His work reflected an active and ongoing dialogue between both geometric and organic forces. \nCCAI’s exhibit will be in Western Nevada College’s Bristlecone Gallery\, 2201 W College Parkway\, Carson City from Sept. 18 – Dec. 11\, 2024. The gallery is open to the public\, Monday through Friday\, 8 a.m. – 7 p.m. The artist’s reception will take place on Tuesday\, October 22\, 5 – 6:30 p.m. \nMorrison (1941 – 2018)\, created countless sculptures\, paintings\, and drawings during his lifetime. Late in his career\, his metal sculptures evolved to include sound. A major installation work was Tongues: The Half Life of Morphine (1986) presented by the Nevada Museum of Art as part of Robert Morrison: A Retrospective in 2004. Quoted from the museum’s catalog by the same title\, critic Jeff Kelley wrote: “As a sculptor\, he works with manufactured steel plate. As a performer\, he works with electronic and ambient sound. That he is and uses both suggests the degree to which neither\, alone\, defines his identity as an artist. Like an endless string of reflections\, that identity teeters on the edge of powerful dualities: abstraction and figuration\, masculine and feminine\, denial and expression\, mass communication and isolation\, silence and speech — maybe even father and son\, which\, if you are a man and an artist represents both the power and powerlessness of your own personality.” \nMorrison created and showed his art for over five decades in many group and one-person exhibitions locally and nationally\, including Los Angeles\, San Francisco\, Las Vegas\, Florida\, Texas\, and New York. He earned a bachelor’s degree from California State University\, Fresno\, a master’s degree from Stanford University\, and did post-graduate studies at the University of California\, Davis. Sculpture Magazine did a feature article on Morrison written by William L. Fox in its March 2005 edition. The National Endowment for the Arts awarded Morrison a Visual Arts Fellowship in 1990\, and the Nevada Arts Council awarded him Visual Arts Fellowships in 1990 and 1984. He was Professor in the Art Department and chair of the sculpture program at the University of Nevada\, Reno from 1968–2017 and was awarded emeritus status on his retirement. \nProfessor Brett Van Hoesen wrote the exhibition essay for “A Glimpse Back” about her colleague and friend. She specializes in European modern and contemporary art with emphasis on German art\, Dada\, photomontage\, visual culture studies\, German colonial studies\, and sound art. Additional areas of research include African art and museum studies. Van Hoesen travels regularly for national and international conferences. Before joining the University of Nevada\, Reno faculty\, she served as the visiting instructor for modern and contemporary art history at the University of Missouri\, Columbia. Van Hoesen also has held museum internships at the Busch-Reisinger Museum and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University\, the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore\, and the University of Iowa Museum of Art. She regularly presents public lectures and provides docent training at the Nevada Museum of Art. In summer of 2012\, she taught a course in contemporary art in Torino\, Italy\, for the University Studies Abroad Consortium. \nCarlos Ramirez\, a former Western Nevada College Latino Leadership Academy student\, provided a Spanish translation of the show’s wall text. \nWestern Nevada College is a component of the Nevada System of Higher Education\, with campuses in Carson City\, Douglas County\, and Fallon. CCAI is an artist-centered nonprofit organization committed to community engagement in contemporary visual arts through exhibitions\, illustrated talks\, arts education programs\, artist residencies\, and online activities. \nThe Initiative is funded by the John and Grace Nauman Foundation\, Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities\, Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts\, Kaplan Family Charitable Fund\, Southwest Gas Corporation Foundation\, Steele & Associates LLC\, and CCAI sponsors and members. \nFor additional information\, please visit CCAI’s website at www.ccainv.org.
