SUMMARY:Three Generations of Polarized Light Art
DESCRIPTION:In the 1960s\, a time of cross-pollination in art and science\, Austine’s engagement with light and optics was shaped by her discovery of the phenomena of polarized light from her first husband\, astronomer and physicist H. John Wood. In 1967\, Austine developed a new light-based medium that she called Polage. By collaging clear cellophane between cross-polarizing filters\, she began producing full color artworks without using any pigments or dyes. \nSelecting for specific wavelengths from the prismatic spectrum of color in natural light produces her color palette. Colors plucked from light are vibrantly alive and will shift and change as the filters rotate or as the viewer moves about\, making the perception of the art an active component of the work. \nIn 1976\, Austine and her husband\, David Comarow moved to the Las Vegas area. They worked together to establish a long-lasting studio practice and refined her Polage medium and methods of display\, leading to many innovations and commissions over the following decades. Their first studio gallery opened in Boulder City\, Nevada\, in 1985. \nThat same year\, Austine’s eldest daughter\, Cara Wood Ginder\, began working for Austine Studios as an art assistant\, fabricator\, and studio manager. This began a longtime artistic partnership with her mother\, which grew into full design collaboration in later years. \nIn 1998\, Austine’s younger daughter\, Erika Wood\, became part of the studio\, later focusing on designing hybrid production methods that enabled Polage artworks to be created in carefully controlled multiples\, comparable to traditional printmaking. \nAt that time\, Austine Studios entered a long-term relationship with Maui Jim sunglasses\, bringing the medium into dialogue with applied optics and polarized-lens technology as they secured an exclusive on Austine Studios artwork in optical boutiques worldwide. \nIn 2018\, Cara accepted the position of full-time lead artist and studio director of Austine Studios. Her daughter\, Charlotte Ginder\, joined the studio in 2019; the third generation to work in the family business of Polage. \nAfter Austine’s sudden passing in 2020\, Cara\, Erika\, and Charlotte kept up the family legacy as the artists of Austine Studios until it closed in 2025. \nAustine’s art is on view in the permanent collections of the Museum of Science\, Boston; the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science; and Swarthmore College\, among others\, appearing in museums\, hospitals\, public spaces\, and private collections around the world. \nThe nearby Spring Mountains Visitor’s Center\, just outside Las Vegas on Mt. Charleston\, features a 75-foot-long Polage art mural celebrating the flora and fauna of the desert that inspired so much of her work. \nToday Cara and Erika have launched a new collaboration\, Lightread Studios\, where they continue their work together creating polarized light artworks and commissions. \nOn exhibit at Sahara West Library\, 9600 W Sahara Ave. Las Vegas\, Nevada\, through May 2\, 2026.

SUMMARY:West Las Vegas Arts Center presents Toe Tags Monologues Live
DESCRIPTION:Toe Tag Monologues Live\, written by retired Las Vegas Metropolitan police officer and founder\, R. Byron Stringer\, are based on real life and death situations our youth face daily. Stringer took stories of events from the streets and put pen to paper to create Toe Tag Monologues that address the multi-faceted challenges of drug abuse\, bullying\, drinking and driving\, teen suicide\, human trafficking\, gang violence\, school violence and shootings\, domestic violence\, self-harm and low self-esteem. These powerful monologues present realistic scenarios often resulting in a toe tag and body bag\, and youth are encouraged to engage in open discussions. These discussions require the program participants to use their critical thinking skills to identify and remove any challenges preventing them from making positive life choices. The team is teaching our youth that every choice has a consequence\, and some consequences have to be dealt with for an entire lifetime.

SUMMARY:To The Left
DESCRIPTION:The College of Southern Nevada\, School of Arts & Letters\, and Department of Fine Arts in collaboration with the City of Henderson\, will host a multi media group exhibition by Nevada-based artists\, Aimee Coello\, Camile Lovaz\, Rose Miller\, Niko Navalta\, Jessica Samaniego\, Bella Sanabria\, Montaysia Yuneek\, and Arianna Zaremehrjardi titled To The Left in the Art Gallery at the City of Henderson’s Debra March Center of Excellence. To The Left will open on Friday\, Feb. 13\, 2026\, and run through Saturday\, June 20\, 2026. A special panel discussion and artist reception will take place on Thursday\, June 11\, 2026\, starting at 6 p.m. \nTo The Left explores the fertile ground between the tangible world and the limitless potential of “the possible.” By presenting a collection of alternative realities\, the exhibition serves as a portal into spaces where the rules of the everyday are rewritten. This multi-media group show bridges the gap between our current existence and the speculative futures or parallel dimensions envisioned by the artists. Each work functions as a unique snapshot of another universe\, woven together into an open narrative that challenges viewers to look beyond the horizon of their own reality and consider the radical potential of the imagined. \nThe exhibition features a diverse array of perspectives\, ranging from the surreal to the deeply personal. Navalta uses graphic narratives to replace human figures with rabbits\, exploring the darker facets of the human condition\, while Zaremehrjardi’s paintings navigate social conditioning through figures of ambiguous gender. Miller and Coello offer contrasting approaches to construction and escapism—Miller through the tactile layering of found imagery and Coello via an alter ego navigating deceptive\, child-like environments. Rounding out the collection\, Lovaz investigates the friction between the divine and the human\, using fictional muses to critique the cultural idolization of young Latinas. Together\, these artists transform the gallery into a fragmented map of worlds that might have been\, or may yet be. \nThe Debra March Center of Excellence is a partnership between the City of Henderson and the College of Southern Nevada. Located in West Henderson\, this facility is a critical feature for diversifying our industry by fulfilling a need for high-skilled\, advanced manufacturing training. This specialized training facility is a valuable resource for both businesses that want to relocate to the area\, as well as existing locally based companies looking to expand. The Center of Excellence is located in the burgeoning West Henderson area\, which boasts the popular Henderson Executive Airport and is home to a wide range of distribution centers\, corporate headquarters\, and industrial parks. \nThe CSN Arts Galleries are free\, family friendly\, and open to the public. Gallery hours of the Debra March Center of Excellence Art Gallery are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Debra March Center of Excellence Art Gallery is closed on Saturday and Sunday\, Nevada state holidays\, and between CSN academic terms. The Debra March Center of Excellence is located at 2200 Via Inspirada\, Henderson\, Nevada 89044. \n“This program/project was supported\, in part\, by the Nevada Arts Council\, a state agency\, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts\, a federal agency\, and the state of Nevada.” \nFor more information\, please call 702-651-4146 or visit http://www.csn.edu/artgallery

SUMMARY:Artist In Action: Eileen Fuller
DESCRIPTION:Stop by Darkshot Coffee\, grab a hot or cold beverage\, check out local art\, and meet the Artist In Action: \nEileen Fuller \nTuesday\, Feb. 17\, 2026\, from 9 a.m.-noon. \nLocated at:\nDarkshot Coffee\nIn the lobby\, 300 E. 2nd St.\, #101\nReno\, NV 89501 \nAbout The Artist: \nEileen Fuller is principally a watercolor artist\, with recent forays into pastels and other multiple-media art. She began drawing and painting as a preschooler. Although the materials were put on the back shelf\, Eileen continued to return to her art throughout her life. \nAfter Eileen’s family grew\, she reawakened the artist within by taking numerous workshops and immersion in the artist community in Northern Nevada. She retired from the banking industry in 2003 and never looked back! She is a longtime member of the Sierra Watercolor Society and the Latimer Art Club (established in 1921.) In 2021 she organized four art shows celebrating the club’s 100th anniversary. Eileen is also a member of the Artists Co-operative of Reno since 2010. She is continuing a three-year term as its president. \nLandscapes are her favorite subject. And with the variety of scenery in the surrounding area\, there is no shortage of places she likes to paint on site or photograph for incorporation into works to be finished in her studio. Eileen also loves to paint while traveling. \nAs a teacher of basic to intermediate watercolor\, she believes that each of us was born with creative abilities. These abilities may be dormant but can be brought out if we are willing to make the effort. If you are interested in awakening the “artist within” or in a commissioned piece\, contact her at 775-233-4796 or at eileen.fuller@sbcglobal.net. \n

SUMMARY:“Postcards From the Edge (of Nevada)” Our Center Reno
DESCRIPTION:McKinley Arts & Culture Center\nGallery West\nFeb. 23 – April 2\, 2026\nReception\, Thursday\, Feb. 26\, 2026\, 5-7 p.m. \nReno\, NV- A community art gallery featuring queer artists and their words of hope. \nPostcards From the Edge (of Nevada) is a community-driven exhibition that invites queer artists and allies to reflect on place\, identity\, and survival at the margins. Using the humble postcard as both artwork and message\, this exhibition transforms personal expression into a shared act of connection—one that crosses distance\, isolation\, and silence. \nAt the edge of geography\, culture\, and visibility\, queer communities in Nevada have long cultivated resilience through creativity\, humor\, tenderness\, and mutual support. This exhibition honors those lived experiences by creating space for artists of all backgrounds to speak directly to the queer community—past\, present\, and future—through words and images meant to be held\, sent\, and remembered. \nPostcards From the Edge (of Nevada) is not just a collection of artworks\, but a living archive of care. Each postcard becomes a gesture of solidarity\, a reminder that even at the edge\, we are not alone. \n“At Our Center\, we are dedicated to creating and supporting inclusive programs for the entire LGBTQ+ community. This includes offering support groups for youth and adult trans members\, community groups for seniors\, and prevention-focused initiatives.” \nTo learn more about what Our Center offers\, please visit: https://ourcenterreno.org/ \nGallery West\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:“Reno Mug Shots: vessels\, possibly made for drinking\, inspired by Reno” The Wedge Ceramic Studios
DESCRIPTION:McKinley Arts & Culture Center\nGallery East\nFeb. 23 – April 2\, 2026\nReception\, Thursday\, Feb. 26\, 2026\, 5pm to 7pm \nThe artists at the Wedge Ceramics Studio are thrilled to present Reno Mug Shots: vessels\, possibly made for drinking\, inspired by Reno. Making mugs is something all ceramic artists take comfort\, joy\, and pride in\, each for their own reasons. This is not unlike living in Reno and Northern Nevada\, where we delight in Reno each in our own way\, making it our own\, stamping it with our signature. But our individual marks\, left on mugs\, left on our town\, can really only be understood when seen as a whole\, as if we’re all working towards the same unknown goal. \nOur mugs represent what Reno means to us\, the storied past\, shared present\, and an always uncertain but collaborative and communal future. Fill your cup up with whatever you want\, for what you get out of Reno is a magnification and reflection of what you put in. \n“The Wedge Ceramics Studio was started in September 2011 by Sutter and Samantha Stremmel. Moving back to Reno after graduating from Montana State University\, they bemoaned the fact there was no place to play with clay unless you were currently institutionalized in school or classes.” \n“Over a decade later\, we have become an institution ourselves. We are an ever growing\, always dynamic\, entropic studio in a 5000 sq. ft. industrial warehouse turned ceramics studio. Sam and Sutter now work together to operate their respective\, neighboring businesses\, the Wedge and Sierra Water\, an indoor plant shop next door in the warehouse at 2055 Dickerson Rd. We are excited to be a part of Dickerson Road’s family of artists.” \nTo learn more about what The Wedge offers\, please visit: https://www.thewedgeceramics.com/ \nGallery East\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:"At the Heart of Nevada: Basin and Range”
DESCRIPTION:Curated By: Julian Kilker\, Checko Salgado\, and Paula Garrett   \nFeb. 23- April 17\, 2026  \nReception: Wednesday\, March 4\, 2026\, 5-7 p.m.   \nOn the 10-year anniversary of the Basin and Range National Monument\, three friends curated a documentary photography and video exhibit documenting this remote region of Nevada—one located several hours by car north of Las Vegas and Southeast of Reno. The monument features 1\,100 square miles of spectacular undeveloped mountains and valleys in southeastern Nevada\, and its protected status preserves geological and historical features for future generations while continuing to provide access for recreation\, grazing\, and military training.   \nThe collaboration behind this exhibit echoes the cooperation among Nevadan volunteers\, artists\, researchers\, locals\, and visitors who enjoy and help protect our state’s wealth. Basin and Range National Monument is the result of an innovative collaboration among multiple stakeholders. At the Heart of Nevada parallels this creation\, focusing on multiple uses of the land and collaborations among these stakeholders. Among the photographs and videos by multiple contributors are representations of geology and history\, ranching\, volunteering\, recreation\, and artistic and military engagement. Its curators\, board members of the non-profit organization Friends of Basin and Range\, help ensure protection of the ecological\, cultural\, historic\, and recreational resources of the Monument area through community engagement\, advocacy\, interpretive and educational programming\, support of academic research\, site stewardship\, and restoration efforts.  \nFor more information about the Basin & Range National Monument visit https://www.friendsofbasinandrange.com.   \nThe Metro Gallery\, located on the first floor of City of Reno City Hall\, is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno.
