SUMMARY:Downtown Modernists "The New and The Now"
DESCRIPTION:Downtown is a concept\, not a location. Downtown is anywhere\, in any town. It’s where ideas flourish when artists mingled. The Downtown Group. The Downtown School. New ideas were born. The style was edgy and new and not widely accepted as art. \nJoin the Downtown Modernists in its introduction to the community. Founded in Reno\, Nevada\, in February 2023\, Downtown Modernists is a newly formed group of artists hailing from the Reno-Sparks and Truckee-Tahoe region working primarily in the abstract style who are seeking to build a coalition of like-minded artists for salons\, group shows\, and the exchange of ideas. Their goal is to bring their art to local audiences yearning for original\, modern\, and contemporary paintings. \nThis group show by Downtown Modernists features the work of Susan Christopher\, Joanna Drakos\, Jutta Gietl\, Ashley Gottlieb\, April Gratrix\, Andrea Laue\, and Jessamyn Parker. \nJoin the artists for their reception\, Tuesday\, July 9 from 5-7 p.m. The show runs from June 17 through July 26\, 2024\, at McKinley Arts Center\, Gallery West\, 925 Riverside Drive\, Reno\, NV 89503. Hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Free of charge to the public.

SUMMARY:Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press
DESCRIPTION:Exhibition Run: April 16 – Aug. 2\, 2024\nThalia Dondero Gallery\, CEB 2nd floorGlenn & Ande Christenson School of Education Building\nNevada State University1300 Nevada State DriveHenderson\, NV 89002\nM-F 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Closed on July 4\, 2024)Free Parking\n\nNevada State University’s Office for the Arts presents “Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press”\, featuring 34 broadsides produced at the Black Rock Press at the University of Nevada\, Reno using the letterpress process with handset type and relief plates. The printing was done on a Vandercook cylinder proofing press.\nSince it was founded by Kenneth J. Carpenter more than 40 years ago\, the Press has been dedicated to the practice and teaching of the arts and crafts associated with the creation of finely printed books. The Press now has a national reputation for its outstanding work and has become a living museum of traditional printing technology\, housing a variety of cabinets filled with metal type\, and a number of historically significant printing presses. Its centerpiece\, a gilded 1837 super-royal Columbian iron handpress\, is one of the finest examples of a nineteenth century iron handpress to be found anywhere in the country.\nLetterpress broadsides are created for numerous reasons\, frequently to honor a visiting writer at a campus event. The Press has produced broadsides to honor university residencies by U.S. poets laureate Robert Pinsky and Billy Collins. Several broadsides were printed in conjunction with a national poetry broadside competition held in the 1990s; winning poets received cash awards and had their poems printed as broadsides. In recent years\, broadsides have been produced for the Robert Laxalt Distinguished Writers Award\, presented annually by the university’s Reynolds School of Journalism. Each broadside features a quotation from the writings of Robert Laxalt\, one of Nevada’s finest writers. Most of the broadsides in this exhibit were designed and printed by Bob Blesse\, director of the Press. Others have also contributed\, including John Balkwill who was in residence as a book artist and printmaker at the Press during the mid-1990s. Former students assisted with the design\, production\, and illustration of the broadsides.\nBroadside writers include Marjorie Agosin\, Willis Barnstone\, Daniel Boorstin\, Andre Codrescu\, Billy Collins\, Hayden Curruth\, Carol V. Davis\, John Dofflemyer\, Joseph Duemer\, Gretel Ehrlich\, Martha Elizabeth\, A. Bartlett Giamatti\, Shaun T. Griffin\, James W. Hulse\, Linda Hussa\, Donna Johnson\, Robert Laxalt\, Wally McRae\, Joel Nelson\, Steven Nightingale\, Naomi Shahib Nye\, Gailmarie Pahmeier\, Robert Pinsky\, Kirk Robertson\, Gary Short\, Kevin Stevens\, Bill Stobb\, Michael White\, Terry Tempest Williams and Paul Zarzyski.\nABOUT Curated by Bob Blesse with Gallery Notes essay by Harry Reese and organized by the Nevada Arts Council\, “Words + Images: Broadsides from the Black Rock Press”\, is part of the Nevada Touring Initiative–Traveling Exhibition Program. It was funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Nevada Humanities\, and the Nevada State Legislature and an anonymous donor. The Nevada Arts Council is a division of the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.###\nFor more information please contact:Stephen Reid – Artist Services Specialist\, Art Installer Nevada Arts Council I 775.687.7108 sreid@nevadaculture.org.

SUMMARY:Yonder: A Saunter Through Skyways and Rumble Strips
DESCRIPTION:On View- June 15\, 2024 – August 1\, 2024\nArt Bar | Reception: June 21\, 2024 5-7:30pm\n\nShow title:\nYonder: A Saunter Through Skyways and Rumble Strips\n\nArtist: Chelsea Houston\nArtist website: chelseahouston.com\n\nArtist Statement:\n\nLooking skyward\, what is reflected back? What has each sky seen? Skies are a holding pattern of reverie\, meant for all . Each skyward spectacle is as unique as the day it cradles\, never to be experienced again\, but all the while familiar: the sky of my ancestors\, the sky of yours; gratitude and comfort of smallness beneath such heavenly bodies\, open space\, the wild blue yonder. These are the themes I held close in creating this oeuvre.\n\nBefore you is a personal map of Reno\, Fort Churchill\, Fallon\, Virginia City\, and onward – our region’s electric sunrises\, operatic sunsets\, and cloud symphonies in between. I incorporated land coordinates to honor the exact space I happened to find myself looking up. I captured each expanse through varied sizes – intimate and vast – to explore my own spatial relationship with the sky (open space vs. window views) and to push my comfort with scale. I rendered each scene as I experienced it – the feelings translated to offbeat hues. \nUtilizing oil as a means of patience and meditation keeps tempo with these phenomena\, a method of classical rendering\, and challenge to my process (which often borders feverish). Delicate wire and twinkling rhinestones tip their hats to Nevada in all its industrialized and glittering glory. Layering these materials in conjunction with light induces dimension– the play of shadow and sparkle having an impact on our environment. \nThis project has fostered intention and beckoned memories of moves by car and road trips. (Hope gliding on highways\, clouds and rays by my side.) I have lived in Nevada off and on for 25 years now; countless land coordinates marking past and present. While I see what I saw years ago\, each sky (though the same) acts as a nest of memories and imagination. Skies were and continue to be a safe space for me. Influences from the masters: Georgia O’Keeffe and Maynard Dixon\, as well as contemporary artist\, Tyana Arviso\, all feed my curiosity and wonder with our High Desert land and its ever-dazzling skyscapes. \nWhile land can be bought\, sold\, and stolen\, clouds and skies belong to all who remember to look up. \nI close my eyes to see and I open them to: understand. \nI close my eyes to see and I open them to: remember. \nI close my eyes to see and I open them to: forgive. \nI close my eyes to see and I open them to: hope.

SUMMARY:Antigona
DESCRIPTION:The sun rises on Thebes in the aftermath of a war between heirs as a Narradora breathes in the “transparent air” of peace\, and the people briefly “start to forget” the violence. Ignoring pleas to “Listen to the People. Listen to the Heavens\,” the new king denies burial rights to the losing brother\, an act of tyranny with devastating consequences. Originally presented in 2000 by the Yuyachkani theatre\, this radical remaking of Sophocles’ ancient Greek parable\, brought to life by one woman\, reflects the struggle for humanity to transcend oppression which leads to deafening silence\, but does not bring peace.

SUMMARY:Artown Opening Night: Scythian
DESCRIPTION:Washington D.C.-based Scythian (sith-ee-yin) began over 12 years ago as a bunch of college buddies playing Celtic music in the streets and has grown to be a headliner on the U.S. celtic festival circuit\, as well as a name in the Bluegrass/Americana festival circuit. They found that their brand of high-energy folk music found a resonance that led the Washington Post to state: “Scythian’s enthusiasm is contagious\, and shows seem to end with everyone dancing\, jumping around or hoisting glasses.” For over 12 years\, they have found success as an independent band and have played over 1\,300 shows all over the United States\, Europe\, Canada and as far aways as Australia. Founded by brothers Alexander and Danylo Fedoryka who are first-generation sons of Ukrainian immigrants\, Scythian from the start has been a search and love for the old time\, good time music of many cultures.
