SUMMARY:Free Family Concert - Tchaikovsky Discovers America
DESCRIPTION:Free Family Concert\nWiggles welcome\, MEMORIES MADE \n“There’s an electric energy in this country… all these people\, so generous and open-hearted… their ideas\, their dreams\, their music… all flowing together like a mighty river – everything tumbling toward the future!” – Tchaikovsky describes what he’s discovered in America. \nThe Reno Phil presents Tchaikovsky Discovers America by Classical Kids LIVE! \nBased on the actual historical event\, this story tells of the great composer’s arrival in New York for the grand opening of Carnegie Hall in 1891 and his famous trip to Niagara Falls. A surprise encounter with a young American girl\, Jennie\, reveals much about Tchaikovsky – his life in Russia\, his love of music and his fears of conducting. This is a poignant story of the meeting of old world influences and new world experiences; a tale of contrast\, courage and classical music.\nAudiences will enjoy more than twenty-five excerpts of the composer’s music including passages from his three famous ballets – The Nutcracker\, Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake -The 1812 Overture\, First Piano Concerto and String Serenade. The music is magically woven into the drama as two actors recreate historical incidents from the composer’s life and dance story passages from his famous ballets. This delightful concert\, dance and story performance is approximately 50 minutes in length and is an ideal introduction to the orchestra for young listeners. \nPlaza Activities: Enjoy special activities for children on the plaza and in the concert hall lobbies related to the theme of the concert\, including a coloring station\, craft station\, and more. Activities take place from 3:00 p.m.- 3:55 p.m. for 4:00 p.m. concertgoers.

SUMMARY:The Classix Series: Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto
DESCRIPTION:Towering masterpieces dominate the opening concerts of the Reno Phil’s 58th season. Driven by rhythm and bold expression\, the vibrant pulse of Mariachitlán by Juan Pablo Contreras moves with confidence and purpose—direct\, energized\, and alive. Audience favorite Jon Nakamatsu returns to the stage to tackle the ultimate challenge\, Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3\, one of the hardest-to-master works in the repertoire. After its premiere in New York City\, a critic wrote that “it’s great length and extreme difficulties bar it from performances by any but pianists of exceptional technical powers.” Nakamatsu brings command and intensity to this iconic work\, creating a gripping exchange between soloist and orchestra. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 stands at the fault line between Classical restraint and emerging Romantic force—bright\, propulsive\, and charged with forward motion. Beneath its radiant surface lies a restless\, assertive energy that crackles with propulsion and tension\, revealing Beethoven on the brink of redefining what a symphony could be. \nON THE PROGRAM\nJuan Pablo Contreras Mariachitlán\nLudwig van Beethoven Symphony No. 2\nSergei Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No. 3

SUMMARY:The Classix Series: Petrushka
DESCRIPTION:Grounded by brilliance and razor-sharp contrast\, this program thrives on the tension between elegance and disruption. The Reno Phil will open the concert with a world premiere performance of a new work by University of Nevada\, Reno graduate\, Max Deger.  Featuring Reno Phil Principal Oboe\, Timothy Gocklin\, Strauss’ Oboe Concerto is a lyrical jewel of the orchestral repertoire\, shimmering with warmth\, elegance\, and singing lines that allow the oboe to speak with extraordinary expressive depth. Written in the final months of World War II\, its serene\, pastoral character and soaring melodies offer both intimacy and grace\, creating a timeless dialogue between soloist and orchestra that feels effortless yet deeply heartfelt. The concert culminates with Stravinsky’s Petrushka\, a masterwork of orchestral storytelling\, where puppets come alive in a whirlwind of driving rhythms\, vivid textures\, and sudden bursts of humor and drama. It is music that leaps off the stage\, with surprises at every turn\, and immerses the listener in a world both mischievous and thrilling. \nON THE PROGRAM\nMax Deger boom/BUST (World Premiere Performance)\nRichard Strauss Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra\nIgor Stravinsky Petrushka
