SUMMARY:Nevada Roadsides: Northern Routes
DESCRIPTION:Carson City\, Nevada — Through her photographs\, Emily Najera presents familiar landmarks in brilliant new light. \nThe Capital City Arts Initiative’s exhibition\, “Nevada Roadsides: Northern Routes”\, presents work by Najera at the Courthouse Gallery from Oct. 2\, 2024 – Jan. 30\, 2025. CCAI will host a reception for the artist on Wednesday\, Oct. 9\, 5-6:30p.m. with the artist’s introduction at 5:30 p.m. The courthouse is located at 885 E Musser St.\, Carson City; the gallery is open Monday–Friday\, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. \nEmily Najera is a photographer and visual artist dedicated to capturing the essence of America’s evolving landscapes. With years of experience in photography\, Najera has developed a singular perspective on documenting the shifting scenes of cities\, roadways\, and buildings. Her key themes include recording revitalization and change\, such as the redevelopment of historical sites\, and blending artistic vision with journalistic storytelling to address diverse topics. Najera took all of the images for this exhibition on highways U.S. 40 and U.S. 50\, which historically brought travelers across the state. \nNajera’s work often focuses on the dramatic interplay of light and shadow\, frequently photographing buildings and places after dark. She said\, “Exhibitions are crucial for my artistic growth\, providing opportunities for community engagement\, experimentation with new techniques\, and collaboration with other artists.” She aims for each exhibition to showcase her work\, allow her to reflect on her artistic journey\, and connect with audiences. \nNajera’s photography has appeared in leading publications such as the New York Times\, Bloomberg\, NPR\, ProPublica\, and more. Notable projects include covering the revitalization of Historic Brush Park in Detroit\, documenting train stations in the Midwest\, and most recently exploring housing affordability issues in Washoe County. These projects highlight her skill in blending artistic vision with journalistic storytelling. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Grand Valley State University in Michigan in 2007 and a M.F.A. degree from the University of Nevada\, Reno in 2013. She lives in Reno with her family. \nAlicia Barber\, Ph.D.\, wrote the exhibition essay for Najera’s show. She is a historian\, educator\, and author working at the intersections of public memory\, historic landscapes\, and community identity. She focuses her work on the history\, culture\, and built environments of the city of Reno\, the state of Nevada\, and the American West. Barber is the founder/owner of Stories in Place LLC. Her independent and collaborative exhibits and historical markers\, oral histories\, and digital projects include Reno Historical\, Illuminating Reno’s Divorce Industry\, and the 4th Street-Prater Way History Project. She wrote Reno’s Big Gamble: Image and Reputation in the Biggest Little City (University of Kansas Press\, 2008)\, and articles and columns for a variety of academic and trade publications. Barber produced and hosted the history feature “Time & Place” for KUNR Public Radio from 2017 – 2019. From 2003 to 2013\, she taught in the Core Humanities Program and Department of History at the University of Nevada\, Reno\, where she also directed the University of Nevada Oral History Program. Dr. Barber holds a B.A. in English from Stanford University\, a M.A. in English from the University of Utah\, and a PhD in American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. The Nevada Writers Hall of Fame awarded Barber its Silver Pen Award in 2014. \nCarlos Ramirez\, formerly a student with Western Nevada College’s Latino Leadership Academy\, provided a Spanish translation of the show’s wall text. \nCCAI is an artist-centered not-for-profit organization committed to community engagement in contemporary visual arts through exhibitions\, illustrated talks\, arts education programs\, artist residencies\, and online activities. \nThe Initiative is funded by the John and Grace Nauman Foundation\, Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities\, Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts\, Kaplan Family Charitable Fund\, Southwest Gas Corporation Foundation\, Steele & Associates LLC\, and CCAI sponsors and members. \nFor additional information\, please visit CCAI’s website at www.ccainv.org.

SUMMARY:Narrative Cartography: A Graduate Workshop with Jessica Oreck
DESCRIPTION:Join Jessica Oreck\, filmmaker and curator (of the Office of Collecting and Design)\, for a non-credit\, graduate-level exploration of how to think about narrative. This workshop is for anyone interested in storytelling structure — geologists\, historians\, physicists\, architects\, creative writers\, filmmakers\, and any other discipline you can imagine. Please complete this brief application no later than Sept. 16\, 2024. \n“When we think of mapmaking\, we tend to think of geography.  But the cartography of a story isn’t about locations.  It is a map through time\, through emotions\, characters\, dialogue\, events. \nHow can we take a story and lay it out on a single page?  Not as a way of telling the story\, but as a way of making a story visible.  A way of fixing the fluidity of time\, drawing linear time as a line of sight.  A way of organizing experience.  A way of breaking the rules.  And then taking what we’ve learned and using them as tools of enlightenment\, change\, chance\, and empathy. \nNarrative Cartography is a short workshop about storytelling\, mapmaking\, time\, distance\, history\, etymology\, and invisibility.” – Jessica Oreck. \nThe workshop will take place over three sessions — applicants must commit to attend all three sessions to be considered for a spot in the workshop: \n\nSaturday\, Oct. 5 from 10 a.m–noon at  the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas (FDH 105)\nSunday\, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. – noon at UNLV (FDH 105)\nSunday\, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. – noon at UNLV\, in the BMI Library (RLL 126)\n\nIf you are interested and available for all three sessions\, please fill out this form. Depending on interest\, there may be a waiting list. We will advise you of your admission status no later than Friday\, Sept. 20\, 2024. \nQuestions? Email Black Mountain Institute’s Associate Director of Programs\, Charlotte Wyatt\, at charlotte.wyatt@unlv.edu.

SUMMARY:“Slow Draw” Jessica Hayworth Kelly Chorpening Otis Poisson Curated By: Chris Lanier (City Artist)
DESCRIPTION:City of Reno City Hall \nMetro Gallery\, 1st floor \nSept. 30 – Nov. 22\, 2024 \nReception: Tuesday\, Oct. 10\, 2024\, 5 – 7 p.m. \nReno\, NV – The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Slow Draw” a group exhibition with work by Jessica Hayworth\, Kelly Chorpening\, and Otis Poisson. Curated by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier\, the show runs from Sept. 30 – Nov. 22\, 2024\, with the reception on Tuesday\, Oct. 10\, 2024\, 5 – 7 p.m. \n“Slow Draw” is a play on the Western-flavored phrase “quick draw\,” and nods to the various cultural movements grouped under the adjective “slow” – slow food\, slow fashion\, and so on. In that context\, “slowness” indicates a sense of care and attention to quality\, as an antidote to the rapidity and frantic busyness of modern life. Each of these artists labors over their drawings – fastidious\, careful\, and intensely observant. Particularly in the current visual environment\, where Artificial Intelligence can produce detailed images in a matter of seconds. there is a particular value to images made – deliberately\, thoughtfully\, and slowly – by a human hand. \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. Metro Gallery is open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is accessible through City Hall’s ground floor entrance on Virginia Street. Parking is available in the City Hall parking garage (northwest corner of First and Center streets). Parking validation can be found inside City Hall. \nTo learn more please visit: https://www.reno.gov/community/arts-culture/city-art-galleries or contact City of Reno Arts & Culture at 775-334-6264.

SUMMARY:Fall 2024 Poetry Workshops at the Left of Center Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Calling all beginning and advanced poets! \nJoin Left of Center and the Black Mountain Institute at the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas for three free poetry workshops designed to engage both beginning and experienced writers in “ekphrastic poetry.” Ekphrastic poems are written in response to works of visual art\, and these three workshops will utilize Left of Center’s collections to help writers generate original poetry. \nPlease note: you will receive an email confirming that you have a spot in one\, two\, or all three workshops\, depending on available space. Please also note that the African Art Museum inside the Left of Center Art Gallery is only accessible by stairs. \nRead the descriptions below for each of the workshops\, then let us know which you’d like to attend. Please only sign up for those you can commit to\, as space is limited\, and we want to be sure everyone gets a chance! \n\nWorkshop 1 – Saturday\, Sept. 14\, 2024\, 1-3 p.m. – Join writer JM Huck for a multi-genre workshop experience utilizing visual art\, music\, and group discussion towards generating poetry. Writers will engage in guided conversation ahead of dedicated writing time towards creating their own original works.\nWorkshop 2 – Saturday\, Oct. 12\, 2024\,  1-3 p.m. – Join writer Sada Malumfashi to view Left of Center’s African Museum as a means of inspiration for your writing. Participants will practice ways to extend the visual language of a work of art into poetry. What does it mean to really look at art? What are the politics of looking? How can words help us to see?\nWorkshop 3 – Saturday\, Nov. 16\, 2024\, 1-3 p.m. – Join writer Lauren Gleave in the African Art Museum inside Left of Center Art Gallery. There\, writers will explore the work on display and generate ideas for poetic language inspired by their interactions with the art\, their movement through the space\, and the emotions that surround that experience of communing with visual art pieces. The workshop will then provide dedicated writing time and feedback for each writer from their peers.

SUMMARY:SIERRA NEVADA BALLET PRESENTS DRACULA
DESCRIPTION:In keeping with the Halloween spirit\, Sierra Nevada Ballet presents a new original full length dramatic story in dance\, DRACULA-The Ballet on Oct. 18\, 2024\, at 7:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center and on Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Pioneer Center for Performing Arts in Reno. In celebration of the season\, the audience is invited to meet the cast and have a party at the fabulous DRACULA BALL which follows immediately after the Pioneer performance at the Renaissance Hotel with refreshments and dancing. Get ballet tickets early and RSVP for the Ball. \nDracula – The Ballet which premiered in 2023 is brought back by audience demand and is the original story ballet created from one of the most famous pieces of English literature about the frightening vampire Count from Transylvania. This original production choreographed by award winning artist Ananda Bena-Weber to the hauntingly beautiful music of Astor Piazolla\, draws upon Transylvanian folklore and history and includes drama\, intrigue\, suspense\, sensuality\, romance\, deception\, mystery\, horror\, death and murder with a touch of Victorian era eroticism. \nThe story is based on the novel by Bram Stoker\, published in 1897 which begins when solicitor Jonathan Harker who is in love with his fiancée\, Mina Murray\, takes a business trip to stay at the castle of a Transylvanian nobleman\, Count Dracula. Harker escapes the castle after discovering that Dracula is a vampire\, and the Count moves to England and plagues the seaside town of Whitby encountering several interesting characters including Mina and her best friend\, the beautiful Lucy Westenra and her three suitors. After Lucy dies mysteriously\,  a small group\, led by Abraham Van Helsing\, hunt Dracula and\, in the end\, kill him. \nMany of the story’s characters have entered popular culture as archetypal versions of themselves. Count Dracula is the quintessential vampire\, and Abraham Van Helsing is the iconic vampire hunter. The story has been adapted numerous times in films\, theater productions and ballets. \nTwo International ballet premier dancers\, Malachi Squires and Domingo Rubio lead a full cast of professional dancers with wonderful costumes and innovative sets. Bena-Weber’s new adaptation with Tango inspired choreography captures the imagination of fantasy lovers with just enough intrigue and mystery to satisfy horror fans. \nDress in your favorite costume and be prepared to be frightened! Then\, join us for refreshments and dancing at the DRACULA BALL on Oct. 26 at the Renaissance Hotel immediately following the Pioneer performance. \nFor ticket information about this event\, and to RSVP for the DRACULA BALL contact the Sierra Nevada Ballet\, visit sierranevadaballet.org or call (775) 360-8663 \nThis production follows Jack Neal’s prediction of success for SNB when he wrote: “ at last a truly professional dance company emerging in the Reno metropolitan area”.    \nVersatile and innovative\, Sierra Nevada Ballet is northern Nevada’s professional ballet company and incorporates the popular with the experimental.  Always a crowd pleaser\, the Ballet offers music and different types of dance from well known classical to new age contemporary original pieces.
