SUMMARY:Harmony in the Park
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of Barbershop Music. Featuring High Desert Harmony and Silver Dollar Chorus \nPlease join us on Sunday evening\, July 9th in Downtown Reno to celebrate this uniquely American music style! There’s something for everyone in this fun evening\, including an introductory workshop on barbershop music for children (of all ages!)\, who will learn the joys of singing in four-part harmony and will join the performers on stage to sing the “tag” they learn. The workshop begins at 5:30pm\, and at 6:00pm (immediately following the workshop)\, get ready for a blowout performance that brings together several ensembles to present variations in the barbershop art form. In addition to the choruses\, several outstanding quartets will showcase their unique take on barbershop music. SUMMARY:Watch Award-winning movie "Sight" at Summit Church on July 9 Monday at 5:30pm
DESCRIPTION:We have been organizing a movie pre screening at Summit Church in Sparks on 7/10 (5:30pm – 9:30pm) for an upcoming Hollywood movie called “Sight”. “Sight” is based on the true story of a Christian brother (Dr. Ming Wang) who is a world-class eye surgeon. Dr. Wang will be present to share and answer questions in person. Please feel free to forward the invitation to your friends so that they have the opportunity to attend. \nThe event is free. RSVP to reserve seat: https://shorturl.at/iDHLM \nHere is the essence of Movie Sight: A little blind orphan girl from India\, named Kajal\, whose eyes were destroyed intentionally by her stepmother beyond restoration for any physical sight\, became Dr. Wang’s teacher and restored his spiritual sight instead. There is more to life than what we can see with our physical sight. This is why Dr. Wang can move on and continue to trust in God and allow himself to be a blessing to many others. \nFacts about movie Sight:\nSight won four awards in the 50th ICVM this year (the so-called “Christian films’ Oscar”) including best picture and best theatrical release.\nTrailer: https://drmingwang.com/in-the-media/videos/video/sight-official-trailer-only-in-theatres-october-27.html\nFeaturette: https://drmingwang.com/in-the-media/videos/video/trailer-of-movie-sight.html \nFacts about Dr. Wang:\nGrew up in Hangzhou in China\, and went to the University of Science and Technology of China right after the Cultural Revolution. \nPh.D in laser physics from Univ of Maryland\, MD from Harvard/MIT \nInventor of Amniotic membrane contact lens. This technology has been used by tens of thousands of eye doctors in nearly every nation throughout the world\, and millions of patients have had their eyesight restored. \nOne of the first eye surgeons in the United States to perform bladeless\, all-laser LASIK\, and SMILE (small incision lenticular extraction). To this day\, his LASIK and SMILE procedures have exceptionally high rates of success. His world-renowned reputation led to him being selected as a LASIK surgeon for ABC’s national hit-show\, Extreme Makeover. \nDr. Wang’s patients include music stars such as Dolly Parton\, Charlie Daniels\, Kenny Chesney\, Naomi Judd\, Nicole Kidman\, Amy Grant\, and a “Dancing with the Stars” winner\, Julianne Hough. \nIn the U.S. only 5% cataract surgeries are performed with lasers (1% for China.) Dr. Wang uses lasers for 100% of his surgeries. Why? Many doctors don’t know physics well enough to use lasers for surgery which requires adjusting laser parameters. \nThe Wang Foundation for Sight Restoration\, a 501c(3) non-profit charity founded by Dr. Wang has helped patients (esp. Blind orphans) from over 40 states in the U.S. and 55 countries worldwide\, with all sight restoration surgeries performed free-of-charge. \nThe event is free. SUMMARY:What the Desert Already Has\, Exhibit by Jen Urso
DESCRIPTION:What the Desert Already Has\, 2023\nJen Urso\nPerformance\, soil from Mormon Mesa (Michael Heizer’s “Double Negative”)\, recycled Plexiglas\, lights\, digitally printed poster \n“What the Desert Already Has” focuses on the small\, time-consuming effort of life in the desert\, from seed to plant. This piece uses soil harvested from Mormon Mesa\, where Michael Heizer created “Double Negative.” The soil was placed in two 1/120 scale trenches\, which is irrigated and lit with grow lights to encourage dormant seeds to grow. Intended as a long-term\, slow performance\, this piece focuses on the small\, persistent efforts of abundant desert life\, contrasted with the large\, destructive bulldozing and mark-making of 1960s/70s land artists like Heizer. The accompanying Mormon Mesa botanical poster situated between the two Plexiglas trenches features plants found by the artist and citizen scientists on iNaturalist with information on known ethnobotanical uses. \nThis temporary exhibit will run from July 12 through Oct 20\, 2023\, in the 1981 gallery.

This exhibition connects artists and their work to the nostalgia behind the phrase “hija/o de tu madre.” Through that phrase\, the artists examine their practice and reflect on childhood and the cultural expectations of living in a latina/e/o/x household. 𝐻𝒾𝒿𝒶/𝑒/𝑜/𝓍(𝓈) 𝒹𝑒 𝒮𝓊– explores joy\, rebellion\, tragedy\, mischief\, and the feeling of “IYKYK” (if you know\, you know). And if you don’t\, come anyway. \nWe’re also excited that this exhibition bridges together artists from both Reno and Las Vegas\, and we will be able to exhibit this show in both cities thanks to the amazing collaborations we have created with the Holland Project and Nuwu Art Gallery + Community Center. SUMMARY:Solo Exhibition "Learning to be Lost" by Reno City Artist Rossitza Todorova
DESCRIPTION:Reno\, NV – The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Learning to be Lost\,” a solo exhibition by 2022-23 Reno City Artist Rossitza Todorova. The show will run from June 19 to August 4\, 2023\, and will showcase new paintings by Todorova that embrace the metaphorical concept of being lost within the desert landscape. \nThe artist reception will take place on Thursday\, July 13\, 2023\, from 5 – 7 p.m.\, and visitors will have a chance to engage with Todorova and learn more about her work. Admission to the exhibition is free\, making it accessible to all community members. \nRossitza Todorova\, a professional artist and Professor of Art at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno\, Nevada\, has an interesting artistic journey that began when she emigrated from Sofia\, Bulgaria\, to Reno\, Nevada\, during her childhood. It was amidst the desert landscape that Todorova’s passion for this awe-inspiring environment was ignited\, guiding the core of her artistic expression. \nIn her art\, Todorova delves into the intricate interplay between the passage of time\, space\, and the intricate tapestry of memory. Her paintings are influenced by the Great Basin and the dynamic boom-and-bust built environment of the West\, blending elements of landscape and geometry. In her work\, Todorova blurs the boundaries between representation and abstraction. \n“In this exhibition\, I use the desert landscape as a metaphor for navigating life’s uncertainties. I invite viewers to contemplate their own paths\, acknowledging the moments when goals and reality may diverge. Drawing inspiration from the desert survival strategies like navigating by the stars and discerning mirages\, I seek to evoke a visceral experience of being lost\, ultimately finding solace in the shared human pursuit of traversing uncertainty.” For more information about the artist\, visit rossitza.art. \n

SUMMARY:Holland Emerge
DESCRIPTION:Emerge 2023 spotlights the works of four up-and-coming young artists from Northern Nevada who are all active participants in the arts community at the Holland Project. Abbay Anderson\, Nic Blauth\, Ruby Burge\, and Olivia Mier have all taken part in our Work In Progress art program and have contributed artwork to multiple Young Blood exhibitions at the Holland Project. We have had the great privilege of seeing their work grow and evolve over the past few years and it is exciting to witness them define their aesthetic and voice as artists. We are thrilled to be able to share their work in the McKinley Gallery and we can’t wait to see what is next on the horizon for each of these talented young artists. \nThe Holland Project is an all-ages arts and music initiative by young people\, for young people\, in the Truckee Meadows. Holland is non-profit\, volunteer-driven organization that produces more than 250 all-ages events annually in the Reno area. Governed by its members\, volunteer boards and our committees\, Holland seeks to propel Reno’s all-ages movement\, and wholeheartedly support and champion opportunities for young people in our community. \nHolland Project hopes to further identify Reno as a cultural center with a vibrant urban scene where art and music thrive. Holland fundamentally believes that music and art are vital forces\, and that young people have the ability and right to shape and share their culture. All-ages events and opportunities are an important part of any healthy and happening community\, and we’re proud to work to present all-ages offerings. \nGallery East\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno.

SUMMARY:Reception: Holland Emerge
SUMMARY:In Print reception juried by Erik Beehn
DESCRIPTION:In Print celebrates the revolutionary role of printmaking in communicating information\, and its ongoing evolution as a significant art practice. Showcasing technical proficiency and innovative approaches\, the selected works demonstrate the diversity and vibrancy of this dynamic medium\, paying tribute to its roots while pushing the boundaries of the medium in contemporary times. We hope to inspire appreciation of the rich history and ongoing innovation of printmaking and engage viewers with the artists’ unique expressions. Whether you are a long-time admirer of the medium or a newcomer to its wonders\, we hope that you to explore the past\, present\, and future of printmaking through this exciting exhibition. \nThis exhibition is juried by Erik Beehn\, an artist and educator working out of Las Vegas. Beehn received his MFA from the School of The Art Institute of Chicago (’15) and is currently adjunct faculty at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Beehn’s work employs painting\, photography\, printmaking and installation to investigate an arc of mark making techniques throughout the 20th century\, with an interest in the evolution of observational painting into abstraction. Beehn is the founder and director of Test Site Projects\, a fine art publishing house and project space located in Las Vegas. Beehn’s work is included in permanent collections at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art\, The Nevada Museum of Art\, and The Cleveland Clinic.

SUMMARY:NTI Traveling Exhibition Meaning Is Always Here Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:City of Reno City Hall \nMetro Gallery\nAugust 14 – October 6\, 2023 \nReception\, Thursday\, September 28\, from 5 – 7 p.m. \nReno\, NV– The City of Reno presents the NTI-Traveling Exhibition\, Meaning is always here. I started the curation of Meaning is Always Here by trying to imagine a persona the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art might present to Nevadans that live far away and cannot reach us. We at the Museum think we have a good sense of who we are\, but how do others perceive us? We shift. Our exhibitions change. Therefore\, this exhibition should show that change with artists from different backgrounds and media. The works should reference the real world and represent a transformation through the artists’ decisions\, so that we can see where they’re coming from. \nMeaning is always here…I think about the artworks that couldn’t be included in this traveling show for reasons of size or fragility. That artwork awaits you here\, at the Barrick Museum of Art. Visit us and see. \nExhibition artists include: Alexander Calder\, Candice Lin\, Chase R. McCurdy\, Kim Rugg\, Krystal Ramirez\, Lucio Pozzi\, Marshall Scheuttle\, Mary Cady Johnson\, Mikayla Whitmore\, Stephen Antonakos\, Tomoko Daido. \nThe Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art is pleased to loan this artwork from our permanent collection to the Nevada Arts Council. Our goal is to help broaden the Museum’s message that everyone deserves access to art that challenges our understanding of the present and inspires us to create a future that holds space for us all. \nABOUT: Curated by Deanna Sole\, Meaning is always here is part of the Nevada Touring Initiative– Traveling Exhibition Program. It was funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the State of Nevada. The Nevada Arts Council is a division of the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno and open to the public\, free of charge\, Monday-Friday\, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The Metro Gallery is accessible through City Hall’s main entrance on the 2nd floor of the City Hall parking garage located on the NW corner of First St. & Center St. To learn more about the exhibition\, visit art & culture at reno.gov. \nFor More information about the exhibition\, please contact or visit: \nhttps://www.nvartscouncil.org/programs/artist-services/nti/nti-exhibitions/meaning-is-always-here/ \n\nDeanna Sole\, Curator of NTI-Transformers Reshaping Form and Meaning\, deanne.sole@unlv.edu\nStephen Reid\, Artist Services Program Specialist\, Nevada Arts Council\, sreid@nevadaculture.org or 775.687.7108

SUMMARY:Reflections Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Reflections are concepts of perception and introspection. Many Mesoamerican cultures used obsidian to create reflective portals\, black mirrors\, into other worlds. Diving further into the esoteric\, the mirror has also brought a lot of anxiety and superstition through beliefs such as demons trapped behind its surface and the childhood game\, Bloody Mary. Vanity is another word that comes to mind when thinking of our reflections. You can see that in the tragedy of Narcissus falling in love with his own image and the clash of European industries in a race to perfect the looking glass due to popular demand. All in all\, our mirror images both allure and terrify us. We invite you to explore these dichotomies through the exhibiting artists’ work\, depicting and exploring the fantastical world of reflections! \nReception: September 30\, 2023 5:30pm-7:30pm. \nJuror \nMikayla Whitmore is an artist and photojournalist working within the vast realms of photography\, sculpture\, and activism. In conversation with landscape\, they utilize concepts of space & existentialism to convey their observations with the romanticization of the West\, queer experience\, and the appreciation of the sublime in the often mundane. Growing up in Las Vegas\, and after obtaining their Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas\, in 2010\, they have exhibited work nationally and internationally. A recent project includes the upcoming Live in America Performing Arts Festival at the Momentary Museum in Bentonville\, Arkansas. Their work can be found in various media\, including The New Yorker\, Vanity Fair\, The Wall Street Journal\, ESPN\, and High Country News. Mikayla is a member of Women Photograph\, a non-profit to elevate the voices of women and nonbinary visual journalists\, and a collaborator of the Mystery Ranch\, an art and ecology research station located near Searchlight\, Nevada.

SUMMARY:"We're Here" Exhibition by Sara Jean Odam at Available Space Art Projects
DESCRIPTION:Available Space Art Projects is please to announce Sara Jean Odam’s exhibition “We’re Here”\, on display August 20th -30th\, 2023. \nOpening reception: Sunday\, August 20th\, 2023 1PM-4PM. \nSara Jean Odam is a painter inspired by performance. Her bright\, playful and direct paintings are portraits mostly of clowns in costumes and environments that are born out of a unique collaboration between painter and performer. She works from  life\, with modeling sessions full of joy\, comparing notes on artistic concerns\, laughs\, deep talks. and sharing music\, time and space. Armed with a pallet of vivid colors\, she relishes in painting textures like fur\, skin\, eye lashes\, satin\, sequins\, stripes\, tulle\, and glitter to play with the visual language of performance and question the gaze of the viewer\, sitter and painter through the old school world of figurative painting. \nAvailable Space Art Projects is an exhibition space that welcomes a diverse group of artists from any career level to showcase new experimental works and installations. It provides the Las Vegas community with opportunities for an engagement with contemporary visual arts\, while also nurturing creative and intellectual growth among artists and visitors. ASAP encourages several ranges of concepts\, mediums\, and styles that challenge and inspire the local community while fostering meaningful interactions between artists and audiences. \nContact us at availablespaceartprojects@gmail.com \nAddress: 900 Liberace Way C-214\, Las Vegas\, NV 89109 \n
