SUMMARY:The Dysfunction of Food: On Food That Isn’t Beautiful or Comforting or Delicious with Kim Foster
DESCRIPTION:Kim Foster\, James Beard Award-winning Author of the forthcoming The Meth Lunches: The Care and Feeding of a Drug Addict\, St. Martin’s Press. \nIn this lecture\, Kim Foster will examine the ways food can signify and complicate dysfunction in Las Vegas\, for both individuals and communities – those with empty tables\, and those with full plates. \nWhat does food mean to people in addiction? Or psychosis? Or in jail? Or for people who don’t have kitchens? What should it mean to the rest of us? \nMost of us think about food as a conduit for connection it’s a cliché now: “Food brings us together” and “Food connects us.” The messages are everywhere. A sea of perfectly constructed social media food images floods our feeds daily. It’s all beautiful\, heavily curated\, intentional\, and privileged. The people eating are happy\, smiling\, and having a ball. It’s a monoculture of food happiness. Foster is a contributor to this culture as a food writer. \nBut food is also a conduit for disconnection\, stress\, family trauma\, and workplace abuse. In families\, the table\, the eating together\, the passing of plates may hold discomfort\, anxiety\, and anger. It brings up things that can\, in other environments\, be let go. For others\, the table holds scarcity\, an annihilating reminder of their poverty. Others still have food on their table\, but no one sitting next to them to share it. \nFood can be a way to control. And punish. And abuse. And a means to force people to conform. And\, there is having no food at all. \nFood is often a litmus test. What we are eating and how we are eating tells us something integral about how we are doing\, and what our lives are like. \nCo-sponsored by the Black Mountain Institute.

SUMMARY:Marty O'Reilly Live at The Virgil
DESCRIPTION:Explaining Marty O’Reilly’s music is like describing a dream. It feels familiar\, but at the same time unchartered. His songs sound bluesy but not blues\, folk but not folk\, soulful but not soul. Marty’s voice is beautiful and unique\, his lyrics stark yet lush over gritty electrified guitar\, melding beautifully into genre-defying music within the vast definitions of Americana. One can hear an urgency and complexity in the songs\, expressing something elemental and perhaps contradictory: love and anger\, joy and pain\, real and imagined.

SUMMARY:Apex Concerts: Spark of Genius
DESCRIPTION:Apex Concerts presents its Grand Season Finale with “Spark of Genius\,” a program with an all-star cast featuring violinists Stella Chen and Sean Lee\, violists Matthew Lipman and Milena Pájaro-van de Stadt\, as well as Apex co-Directors Dmitri Atapine and Hyeyeon Park. Works explored are all centered on the idea of what exactly is the spark of true inspiration and genius. Perhaps it is it the arrival of precocious maturity in the twenty-something year old Franz Schubert and his String Trio in B-flat Major. Or it may be the fervor and passion of the first love\, as exemplified by Joseph Suk and his Piano Quartet Op. 1. Or pure brilliance of the mind of Felix Mendelssohn\, one of classical music’s most celebrated prodigies\, who also achieved some of the most refined and ingenious craftsmanship as evidenced in his majestic String Quintet in D Major Op. 87. SUMMARY:Their Divine Fires Book Launch with Wendy Chen
DESCRIPTION:Join BMI and the UNLV Department of English as we celebrate Creative Writing faculty member Wendy Chen for her debut novel\, Their Divine Fires. A captivating and intimate story interwoven with folktale and myth\, the book is shaped by love affairs of three generations of Chinese women across one hundred years of revolutions\, both political and personal. Drawing on the lives of her great-grandmother and her great-uncles—both of whom fought on the side of the Communists—as well as her mother’s experiences during the Cultural Revolution\, Dr. Chen infuses Their Divine Fires with a passion that will transport the reader back to powerful moments in history while bringing us close to the women who persisted despite the forces all around them. \nWendy Chen is also the author of the poetry collection UNEARTHINGS (Tavern Books). Her translations of Song-dynasty woman writer Li Qingzhao are forthcoming from Farrar\, Straus & Giroux in 2025 in a collection titled THE MAGPIE AT NIGHT. She is the recipient of prizes and fellowships from the Academy of American Poets\, MacDowell\, & elsewhere. Her writing has appeared widely in prestigious venues such as Freeman’s\, A Public Space\, & Mid-American Review. Her work has been translated into multiple languages and adapted into musical compositions. She has taught and spoken at colleges\, universities\, and arts organizations such as the Academy of American Poets\, Poets & Writers\, Poetry Foundation\, & Yale University.\nShe is the editor of Figure 1 and associate editor-in-chief of Tupelo Quarterly. Previously\, she was the poetry and translation editor of Denver Quarterly. She earned her MFA in poetry from Syracuse University and her PhD in English from the University of Denver. Currently\, she is an Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Nevada\, Las Vegas.
