SUMMARY:Sagebrush to Sandstone: Wild Life\, Wild Skies - Nature Walk and Creative Writing
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a day of poetry and outdoor exploration at the Desert National Wildlife Refuge! Local poet JM Huck and Dale Etheridge Planetarium staff will guide participants in experiencing and appreciating our Nevada landscape\, as well as the wildlife within.In the first half hour\, participants will take a slow-paced nature walk on these Corn Creek trails:\n\nBig Horn Loop (partially paved) .35 miles\nCoyote Loop (dirt) .35 miles\n\nBetween 10:00 and 10:30 am\, we will move to the picnic area for readings from Sagebrush to Sandstone: A Humanities Guide to Outdoor Nevada\, as well as a few of Huck’s original poems inspired by Sagebrush to Sandstone. \nFrom about 10:30 to 11:30 am\, participants will then be invited to make their own poems or journal entries\, in response to the landscape and wildlife. Feel free to bring food\, water\, and snacks to enjoy. You may also explore other nearby trails during this time. \nAt 11:30 am\, the Sagebrush to Sandstone event concludes. Those wishing to continue exploring indoor areas can head over to the Visitor Center. \nThis event is free. You do not have to be a nature poet to participate\, all who appreciate nature and the spoken/written word are welcome. Space is limited and registration is required. \nPlease use Visitor Center Parking. Restrooms are located inside the Desert National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center. Note—tree cover in the picnic area is partial and not fully covered. Be sure to bring sunscreen\, a hat\, and stay hydrated!

DESCRIPTION:Relax and spend the morning at Boulder City Library making washi paper collage artwork\, in tribute to the Hoover Dam\, to which the Southwest owes much of its development. In this 2 hour workshop\, participants can choose from a color palette of blues and browns to make their own scene of the Hoover Dam. Images of scenic viewpoints will be provided for inspiration. DESCRIPTION:The city of Las Vegas invites the community to a free outdoor Caribbean Heritage Festival Saturday\, May 18\, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza in Lorenzi Park\, 720 Twin Lakes Drive. Bring your family to enjoy the traditions\, music and flavors of the Caribbean. Performances will include steel drums\, reggae\, traditional Cuban music\, Bahamian processionals and more. There will be free activities for children\, face painting\, community exhibitors\, visual artists and artisan booths\, as well. Jamaican/Latin Caribbean food trucks and an alcohol vendor will offer refreshments for sale. Bring low-back chairs and blankets to be more comfortable on the lawn seating. Pets will not be permitted inside the festival plaza. \nLongtime KUNV 91.5 broadcaster and reggae artist Stan Rankin T will be master of ceremonies. Registration encouraged for this free workshop. \n11:30am-1pm \nPaper Bird Workshop with Bobbie Ann Howell \nThe hands-on art workshop will cover several folded paper bird patterns\, cutting\, folding\, and coloring and detail design options. Nevada is part of the Pacific Flyway that many species of birds use to rest and feed during their annual migration as well as the many native species that call Nevada home.  This is a Nevada Humanities program.
