SUMMARY:“Notions of Erasure: United By Territory” Nevada Arts Council
DESCRIPTION:City of Reno City Hall\nMetro Gallery\nApril 27 – June 18\, 2026\nReception: Thursday\, May 12\, 2026 5–7 p.m. \nReno\, Nevada – Metro Gallery presents Notions of Erasure: United By Territory\, an exhibit that provides an opportunity for the residents and visitors of Reno to view selected works\nfrom the 2023 Nevada Arts Council Visual Arts Fellows. \nThis traveling exhibition\, curated by the Nevada Arts Council’s Artist Services Program\, features 2023 fellows: Jeffrey Burden of Las Vegas\, Glynn Cartledge of Reno\, Gig Depio\nof Las Vegas\, Miya Hannan of Reno\, Brent Holmes of Las Vegas\, and Bobbie Ann Howell of Las Vegas. Each artist created work independently of one another and with no\nintention of ever appearing together; yet\, when shown alongside one another\, the exhibit reveals how an artist’s place\, time and environment can create unexpected\nand unintended connections that share human experiences. This exhibit brings together an extraordinary collection of unique artworks that span multiple media—from intimate\ndrawings and bold paintings to intricate textiles\, delicate cut paper compositions\, and innovative digital creations. \nThe prestigious Nevada Arts Council Fellowship Award provides meaningful financial support and enhanced public recognition to exceptional Nevada artists\, fostering their\ncontinued pursuit of artistic excellence and creativity. \nThe exhibit is part of the Nevada Touring Initiative (NTI) Traveling Exhibition Program\, which delivers high-quality visual arts exhibits to communities throughout the state. It is\nfunded by the State of Nevada and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Nevada Arts Council is a division of the Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. The Nevada Arts Council\, a division of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs\, was created as a state agency in 1967. With offices in Reno and Las Vegas\, Nevada Arts Council programs serve as a catalyst to stimulate artistic\, creative\, cultural\, and economic activity across the state\, enliven its breadth of communities\, ensure lifelong learning in the arts for all Nevadans\, and to encourage public and private support for the arts. \nTo learn more about the exhibition\, visit: https://www.reno.gov/community/arts-culture/city-art-galleries/metro-gallery or www.nevadaartscouncil.com.

The 2026 series works represent a range of artist and movement approaches locally\, nationally\, and internationally: a work blending Colombian folkloric dance with queer and experimental movement to explore identity\, resilience\, and collective transformation (Alexis Restrepo; Medellín\, Colombia; Otredanza compañía artística LGBTI de Medellín)\, a performance exploring the struggles of India’s LGBTQ community and family abandondment (Sudeshna Dey; West Bengal\, India)\, and a duet examining the challenges of communication and connection in modern life (Yan Longdan; Chongqing\, China). \nAbout MDD’s Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change \nFounded in 2010\, MDD’s Virtual Salon Performance Series for Social Change is a conversation facilitated by curator\, choreographer\, and scholar Mark DeGarmo\, Ph.D.\, with audiences and diverse global dance makers presenting works-in-process. It is a unique opportunity to demystify the creation of choreography and to enjoy a wide range of performance approaches\, genres\, and styles. VSPS presents under-represented and under-recognized dance makers across New York City and state\, the USA\, and internationally. Since February 2019\, MDD has presented in 42 salons\, including 2 Virtual International Arts Festivals\, featuring 566 total artists from 23 states and 31 countries. Past audiences and dance makers have remarked: \n“The salon was a warm\, welcoming\, positive environment!” \n“I loved the convenience of watching the performance on Zoom!” \nAbout Mark DeGarmo Dance \nMark DeGarmo Dance began operations in 1982\, incorporated in 1987\, and celebrates its 39th anniversary in 2026 as a leading New York City nonprofit dance organization located in Manhattan’s Lower East Side at NYC-owned The Clemente Soto Vélez Cultural & Educational Center (The Clemente). President Barack Obama commended DeGarmo and MDD for your service to your community and the nation. The National Endowment for the Arts deemed MDD’s NYC dance education program for under- resourced public elementary students living under the federal poverty rate “a national model.” National Dance Education Organization research shows that a mere 1-7% of USA elementary schools have such a dance education program as our Partnerships in Literacy through Dance & Creativity. \nhttps://markdegarmodance.org \nFollow Mark DeGarmo Dance on Facebook\, Instagram\, LinkedIn\, YouTube\, and Vimeo.  \nOur programs are supported\, in part\, by private and public funds from American Online Giving Foundation; Jody and John Arnhold; Benevity; Frances and Benjamin Benenson Foundation; Bernheim Foundation; Blackbaud Giving Fund; Lisa and Dick Cashin; PJ and Dawn Dearden; Rev. SUMMARY:Reno Jazz Orchestra Hosts Mother's Day Concert Tribute to Al Jarreau
DESCRIPTION:The Reno Jazz Orchestra presents “An Afternoon of Romance – The Al Jarreau Project” on Mother’s Day\, May 10\, 2026\, at the University of Nevada\, Reno\, Nightingale Concert Hall.  Renowned vocalist Nicolas Bearde joins the 17-piece orchestra to honor Jarreau’s legendary sound and style. \n“Perfect for a Mother’s Day outing\, An Afternoon of Romance blends live jazz\, nostalgia\, and heartfelt celebration in an intimate concert experience\,” said Greg Johnson\, Ph.D.\, music director for the Reno Jazz Orchestra. “Whether you’re searching for a unique Mother’s Day event\, a live jazz performance\, or a tribute to one of music’s great innovators\, this performance promises an afternoon of elegance\, rhythm\, and unforgettable music that everyone will enjoy.” \nKnown for his smooth vocals and dynamic stage presence\, Bearde will bring fresh energy to beloved classics while staying true to the spirit of the original recordings. Audiences will enjoy iconic songs including “We Got By\,” “We’re in This Love Together\,” and “Spain\,” along with other fan favorites that showcase Jarreau’s genre-defying artistry. \nBearde is a singer-songwriter\, actor\, and educator whose 35-year career has taken him from humble beginnings to stages worldwide. With a style compared to Lou Rawls\, Nat King Cole\, and Bill Withers\, he is celebrated for his velvet voice\, wit\, and engaging live performances. \nBearde has several special projects that accentuate his passion and appreciation for Jazz; among them are Jarreau and Beyond\, A Salute to Lou-The Music of Lou Rawls\, I Remember You-The Music of Nat King Cole and The Timeless Tunes of Burt Bacharach. \nHe has headlined venues across the U.S. and internationally. Last year\, Bearde performed with the Orchestra in “The Legends of Jazz\,” a journey through jazz’s New Orleans roots. \nSince 1997\, the Reno Jazz Orchestra has carried forward a legacy established by world-class musicians who performed with legends like Frank Sinatra\, Elvis Presley\, and Luciano Pavarotti. Today\, that tradition continues through top performers connected to the University of Nevada\, Reno\, and throughout the West. \nFor almost 30 years\, the orchestra has and continues to create Big Band experiences\, from jazz classics to famous tunes from the Great American Songbook and innovative contemporary compositions. Each season\, popular guest artists join their performances that inspire\, celebrate and fuel the future of the magic of jazz. \nThe concert starts at 4 p.m. Tickets (with pre-reserved seats) are $40 or $50 and are available by visiting RenoJazzOrchestra.org or calling 775-372-6160.

SUMMARY:StorySLAM: Paper Trail
DESCRIPTION:Every story leaves a trace. This theme uncovers the records\, documents\, and breadcrumbs that hold the power to reveal secrets\, spark memories\, or change lives forever. From love letters to eviction notices\, faded receipts to legal contracts\, the paper trail marks our triumphs\, mistakes\, and everything in between. Prepare for a night of storytelling that follows the paths we’ve left behind—and the stories that refuse to be erased.
