SUMMARY:"And Then They Came For Us" - Documentary Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month\, join Nevada Humanities and The Library District for a special screening of the award-winning documentary And Then They Came For Us (2017\, NR\, 40 minutes) about the unjust incarceration of over 120\,000 Japanese Americans during World War II\, followed by an open forum discussion with the audience. \nThrough the use of newly released photos taken by Dorothea Lange\, Ansel Adams and others\, plus the eyewitness testimony from incarcerated survivors such as George Takei and Fred Korematsu\, the film exposes the damage Executive Order 9066 did to 120\,000 people of Japanese descent who were forcibly removed from their homes along the U.S. Pacific Coast\, two-thirds of whom were American-born citizens. In addition to demonstrating the civil rights violations against persons of Japanese ancestry during WWII in America\, And Then They Came For Us follows contemporary Japanese American activists as they speak out against the Muslim registry and travel ban post 9/11. \nKnowing our civil history is the first step in making sure we do not repeat such mistakes. After the documentary screening\, stay for a discussion about the Japanese American evacuation and forced internment during WWII\, Executive Order 9066\, and parallel civil rights violations against Asians today. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come\, first served basis and may be limited. For more information\, please call 702-507-3458.

SUMMARY:Kings & Queens Call for Art
DESCRIPTION:CALL FOR ENTRIES – The King & Queen of Las Vegas – GROUP ART SHOW  \nLas Vegas\, NV – Tuesday\, March 12\, 2024 – Arty’s Steakhouse\, in collaboration with ReBAR + Davy’s\, is pleased to announce a call for entries for its inaugural group art show\, The King & Queen of Las Vegas. This multi-venue event aims to pay tribute to the 25-year mayoral run of Oscar and Carolyn Goodman as the city prepares for a new mayor to be elected in the upcoming general election. \nLocal artists from across Southern Nevada\, regardless of experience level\, are invited to submit original artwork that explores the theme of the King & Queen of Las Vegas. From paintings and sculptures to drawings and collages\, all forms of wall art are welcome for consideration. \nThe inspiration behind the show comes from the rich and extravagant spirit of Las Vegas\, a city known for its unique brand of American dream-making. SUMMARY:The Wesley Bell Ringers Summer Tour 2024 in Mesquite
DESCRIPTION:The Wesley Bell Ringers will perform at First Baptist Church in Mesquite\, Nevada\, on Saturday\, June 8 at 6 p.m. This will be the first concert on the choir’s 58th annual summer tour and will feature 16 teenage ringers playing more than 150 handbells and handchimes.\n\nIn 1963\, The Wesley Bell Ringers\, a music ministry of Christ United Methodist Church in Salt Lake City\, UT\, began with nine youth ringers and 25 bells. From the very beginning membership in the choir has been open to any youth dedicated to learning the art of handbell ringing and caring for their fellow ringers.\n\nFast forward 60 years! The 16 current ringers are the most recent of more than 500 youth who have participated in the choir. The experience and dedication has never changed. The choir developed a reputation for musical excellence that continues to open doors to exciting opportunities. The previous 57 summer tours have taken the choir to all 50 states and all but one of the Canadian provinces. They have performed at the US Capitol\, Cathedral of the Pines National Monument\, Mt. Rushmore\, George Washington Masonic Memorial\, Disneyland and Disneyworld. The choir has participated as the featured choir at numerous handbell festivals around the United States\, and performed for The National Music Educators convention. Performances with The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and The Utah Symphony Orchestra have been repeated honors over the choir’s history. In 2017\, the choir was invited to record with The Piano Guys on their album Christmas Together.\n\nThis year\, the choir is thrilled to be invited to perform a solo concert as the featured youth choir at the Ringing Up! Festival on June 15\, hosted by Area 11 of the Handbell Musicians of America in Salt Lake City\, Utah.\n\nHighlights from the 2024 summer concert include Disney’s “Go The Distance\,” Léon Boëllmann’s “Toccata from Suite Gothique\,” Sondra “Tucker’s “Christmas Kaleidoscope\,” and commissioned selections from noted handbell composers Kevin McChesney and Joel Raney.\n\nFirst Baptist Church is located at 830 E. Hafen Lane\, Mesquite\, Nevada. Admission to the concert is free and a freewill offering will be collected if attendees would like to support the choir.

SUMMARY:Living in the Dessert
DESCRIPTION:Clark County Public Art is thrilled to announce our upcoming exhibition\, Living in the Dessert juried by Brian “Paco” Alvarez in the Rotunda Gallery\, nestled within the Clark County Government Center. \nA spin on the common misspellings of desert and dessert\, Living in the Dessert is an exhibition that fuses our arid environment with the indulgent treats that most enjoy eating — especially the cold variety during months like these! The artists selected portrayed this fusion in creative and innovative ways using a wide array of mediums. You will see work that either brings the desert into the denseness of desserts or desserts into the dreamscape of the desert! \nThis exhibition is juried by Las Vegas native Brian “Paco” Álvarez\, an entrepreneur\, anthropologist\, and CEO of Psionic Art Works. He holds a master’s degree in urban leadership from University of Nevada\, Las Vegas and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology\, and has worked at various institutions\, including the Liberace Museum\, Neon Museum\, and Zappos.com. \nExhibition Dates: Monday\, June 10\, 2024\, through Thursday\, July 18\, 2024 \nReception Event: Thursday\, July 18\, 2024\, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. \nLocation: Clark County Government Center is located at 500 S. SUMMARY:Queer Monuments
DESCRIPTION:Clark County Public Arts is proud to present Queer Monuments juried by Emily Budd. \nQueer Monuments challenges the classical masculine and cultish notions of monuments and provides a platform for ephemeral and anti-monumental alternatives. Monuments are popularly seen as works of art that share the stories of people\, convey societal values\, and remind us of people’s lived histories; they are objects of remembrance. Anti-monuments take these basic premises and reappropriate them to tell the resilient stories of LGBTQIA+ people. The artists in this exhibition present personal monuments to the queerness in their lives. \nSculptor Emily Budd will lead as the exhibition’s juror\, infusing her expertise and passion into the selection process. Budd’s sculptural practice\, driven by the pursuit of queer futurity and place-making\, has garnered acclaim for its transformative narratives. Her project\, Memorial for Queer Rhyolite\, stands as a poignant tribute to an era marked by the AIDS epidemic\, capturing the essence of Nevada’s queer utopian spirit. Budd’s groundbreaking work has been featured in respected publications such as The Washington Post and showcased on Discovery Channel’s Mysteries of the Abandoned: Hidden America. \nExhibition Dates: Tuesday\, June 11\, 2024\, through Thursday\, July 25\, 2024 \nReception Event: Thursday\, July 25\, 2024\, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. \nLocation: Winchester-Dondero Community Center is located at 3130 McLeod Drive\, Las Vegas NV 89121. SUMMARY:Downtown Modernists "The New and The Now"
DESCRIPTION:Downtown is a concept\, not a location. Downtown is anywhere\, in any town. It’s where ideas flourish when artists mingled. The Downtown Group. The Downtown School. New ideas were born.
