The show runs from May 19 – July 11\, 2025\, showcasing fine art photography and collage by Owens that offers a deeply personal and transformative reflection of her experience as a mixed race Black and Filipino woman born and raised in Reno. Her art practice is a contemplative process in which she utilizes photographic mediums to explore the past\, present\, and future self. By exploring her inner world\, her artwork demonstrates the powerful effects of self-reflection and the impact it has on the evolution of identity. \nFormer Reno City Artist Rossitza Todorova describes that Owens’ art “reflect her journey of introspection and identity\, exploring the intersections of race\, place\, and personal history. Jordyn’s ability to convey such narratives through visual mediums makes her a standout artist and a strong representative of the dynamic and diverse culture we are working to build in Reno.” \nOwens won the Award for Excellence in Fine Art Photography at the Reno Tahoe International Art Show in 2022 and 2023 and was a finalist in 2024. Each student was allowed to choose whatever materials they needed to create masks that either encapsulate their identity or tell a story. What they created were unique\, eye-catching pieces of art that showcase the imagination and intricacies of the mind of a child. \nEach mask evokes a diversity of human emotions and experiences. A total of 15 students came together to capture their individual essence through renditions of personal expression and self-discovery. There were no guidelines placed upon the creation of these masks\, which allowed there to be a true representation of authenticity in how students wanted to present themselves through their art. \nOur curated logo is meant to represent Peavine Mountain which is the most prominent mountain in our surrounding area here in Reno. On it\, you will see a variety of masks that are meant to represent the impact each person can have on their hometown with the ability to create with no limitations. They manage to look both cheap or expensive\, depending on the situation. Little kids sport them on their backpacks and sneakers\, and they add glitter to couture gowns where they’re sewn on\, one by one. These little plastic discs come in wild colors and muted tones\, and the colors are hard to pin down because they change with the light. Sequins are flexible and rigid\, cloth and armor\, cuttable and bendable. I see no end to their possibilities\, and that is what keeps me interested in their potential. Plus\, sequins just look cool” – Beck Baumann \nBeck Baumann (b.1975) is a mixed media artist with a special focus on sequins who makes her home in Reno\, Nevada. Beck’s whimsical sequin sculptures draw from childhood memories and a joyful nostalgia. The word that most often comes to mind is FUN. She likes to combine unexpected elements from everyday objects to create things never seen before. Her inspiration comes from that childhood place when the world felt strange\, scary\, and full of wonder. \nBaumann’s work is a blending of sculpture and wall art that is primarily covered in sequins. She incorporates trashed Styrofoam and thrifted and recycled materials into her pieces whenever possible. Her husband\, Robert Baumann\, is her fabricator and collaborator\, and he also creates custom wood frames for her art. \nBeck’s creative journey began when she started taking graphic design classes at the age of 35. The show runs from March 25 – May 17\, 2024\, showcasing photographs by Lanier that embrace both the marvelous and the mundane. \nThe artist reception will take place on Tuesday\, April 2\, from 5 – 7 p.m. City of Reno Poet Laureate\, Jesse James Ziegler\, will join Lanier in a collaborative and poetic performance. Admission to the exhibition and reception is free and open to the public. \nOver the past twelve years\, Lanier has been posting almost daily photos from his life on Instagram\, converting it to a mobile gallery (of sorts). For this exhibition\, he draws from this archive\, bringing the digital photographs back into the physical realm. Lanier’s images often feel like echoes\, something that seems both familiar and new. Each one is well composed\, providing an enjoyable artistic image. Rather than alienating us through aesthetic formality\, the familiarity of the ordinary creeps in\, inviting us to reflect on our own marvelous/mundane moments. \nAs a window into this process\, Lanier shares\, “I intend “Backyard Radiance” to be a very local\, very idiosyncratic homage to the ordinary\, the day-to-day – which\, when attended to with a certain intention or reverence\, becomes something perhaps a little marvelous.” \nChris Lanier is a Teaching Professor of Digital Art at the University of Nevada\, Reno\, teaching both at UNR Lake Tahoe and the Reno campus. He has worked in a variety of media\, including multimedia performance\, digital animation\, web production\, and comics. Abbay Anderson\, Nic Blauth\, Ruby Burge\, and Olivia Mier have all taken part in our Work In Progress art program and have contributed artwork to multiple Young Blood exhibitions at the Holland Project. We have had the great privilege of seeing their work grow and evolve over the past few years and it is exciting to witness them define their aesthetic and voice as artists. We are thrilled to be able to share their work in the McKinley Gallery and we can’t wait to see what is next on the horizon for each of these talented young artists. \nThe Holland Project is an all-ages arts and music initiative by young people\, for young people\, in the Truckee Meadows. Holland is non-profit\, volunteer-driven organization that produces more than 250 all-ages events annually in the Reno area. Governed by its members\, volunteer boards and our committees\, Holland seeks to propel Reno’s all-ages movement\, and wholeheartedly support and champion opportunities for young people in our community. \nHolland Project hopes to further identify Reno as a cultural center with a vibrant urban scene where art and music thrive.
