SUMMARY:“Slow Draw” Jessica Hayworth Kelly Chorpening Otis Poisson Curated By: Chris Lanier (City Artist)
DESCRIPTION:City of Reno City Hall \nMetro Gallery\, 1st floor \nSept. 30 – Nov. 22\, 2024 \nReception: Tuesday\, Oct. 10\, 2024\, 5 – 7 p.m. \nReno\, NV – The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Slow Draw” a group exhibition with work by Jessica Hayworth\, Kelly Chorpening\, and Otis Poisson. Curated by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier\, the show runs from Sept. 30 – Nov. 22\, 2024\, with the reception on Tuesday\, Oct. 10\, 2024\, 5 – 7 p.m. \n“Slow Draw” is a play on the Western-flavored phrase “quick draw\,” and nods to the various cultural movements grouped under the adjective “slow” – slow food\, slow fashion\, and so on. In that context\, “slowness” indicates a sense of care and attention to quality\, as an antidote to the rapidity and frantic busyness of modern life. Each of these artists labors over their drawings – fastidious\, careful\, and intensely observant. Particularly in the current visual environment\, where Artificial Intelligence can produce detailed images in a matter of seconds. there is a particular value to images made – deliberately\, thoughtfully\, and slowly – by a human hand. \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. Metro Gallery is open to the public and free of charge. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is accessible through City Hall’s ground floor entrance on Virginia Street. Parking is available in the City Hall parking garage (northwest corner of First and Center streets). Parking validation can be found inside City Hall. \nTo learn more please visit: https://www.reno.gov/community/arts-culture/city-art-galleries or contact City of Reno Arts & Culture at 775-334-6264.

SUMMARY:“All That Glitters” Beck Baumann
DESCRIPTION:City of Reno City Hall \nMetro Gallery\, First floor \nJuly 29 – Sept. 20\, 2024 \nReception: Tuesday\, Aug. 27\, 2024\, 5-7 p.m. \n  \nMetro Gallery hosts sequin sculpture artist Beck Baumann “All That Glitters.” The body of work exhibits over 12 sequin sculpture pieces from varying projects spanning over three years. Each piece captures your eyes through the vibrant use of color and sparkle that depicts everyday objects from an ear-shaped handbag\, all the way to delectable food plates. \n“Sequins are everywhere. They manage to look both cheap or expensive\, depending on the situation. Little kids sport them on their backpacks and sneakers\, and they add glitter to couture gowns where they’re sewn on\, one by one. These little plastic discs come in wild colors and muted tones\, and the colors are hard to pin down because they change with the light. Sequins are flexible and rigid\, cloth and armor\, cuttable and bendable. I see no end to their possibilities\, and that is what keeps me interested in their potential. Plus\, sequins just look cool” – Beck Baumann \nBeck Baumann (b.1975) is a mixed media artist with a special focus on sequins who makes her home in Reno\, Nevada. Beck’s whimsical sequin sculptures draw from childhood memories and a joyful nostalgia. The word that most often comes to mind is FUN. She likes to combine unexpected elements from everyday objects to create things never seen before. Her inspiration comes from that childhood place when the world felt strange\, scary\, and full of wonder. \nBaumann’s work is a blending of sculpture and wall art that is primarily covered in sequins. She incorporates trashed Styrofoam and thrifted and recycled materials into her pieces whenever possible. Her husband\, Robert Baumann\, is her fabricator and collaborator\, and he also creates custom wood frames for her art. \nBeck’s creative journey began when she started taking graphic design classes at the age of 35. After completing her degree\, she spent several years writing and illustrating children’s books and a graphic novel. Then\, she moved onto ‘painting’ with seed beads and yarn\, which became the gateway for working with sequins\, her primary medium. \nFor more information\, see her website: beckbaumann.com \n— \nThe Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. Metro Gallery is open to the public and free of charge. SUMMARY:“Home Defined” Meg Pohlod Black Rock Press Fellowship Reception

The works included are created with varying printmaking and letterpress techniques creating a cohesive yet diverse body of artwork. Through my work\, I navigate the landscapes of memory\, emotion\, and human connection\, seeking to unravel the intricate layers that define the concept of home. Each letter of the word home and composition of shapes\, becomes a pathway towards understanding\, as I invite viewers to join me on this journey. I aim to evoke the universal yearning for a place to call one’s own. My art serves as a motivation for contemplation\, sparking conversations about roots\, displacement\, and the essence of belonging in an ever-changing world. Ultimately\, my pursuit is not just to find home but to illuminate the complexity of the search itself.” \nBlack Rock Press publishes a range of literary\, visual and experimental materials that address the evolving nature of the book. SUMMARY:“Backyard Radiance: Photos and Videos of the Marvelous/Mundane" by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier
DESCRIPTION:Reno\, NV – The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Backyard Radiance\,” a solo exhibition by 2024 Reno City Artist Chris Lanier. The show runs from March 25 – May 17\, 2024\, showcasing photographs by Lanier that embrace both the marvelous and the mundane. \nThe artist reception will take place on Tuesday\, April 2\, from 5 – 7 p.m. City of Reno Poet Laureate\, Jesse James Ziegler\, will join Lanier in a collaborative and poetic performance. Admission to the exhibition and reception is free and open to the public. \nOver the past twelve years\, Lanier has been posting almost daily photos from his life on Instagram\, converting it to a mobile gallery (of sorts). For this exhibition\, he draws from this archive\, bringing the digital photographs back into the physical realm. Lanier’s images often feel like echoes\, something that seems both familiar and new. Each one is well composed\, providing an enjoyable artistic image. Rather than alienating us through aesthetic formality\, the familiarity of the ordinary creeps in\, inviting us to reflect on our own marvelous/mundane moments. \nAs a window into this process\, Lanier shares\, “I intend “Backyard Radiance” to be a very local\, very idiosyncratic homage to the ordinary\, the day-to-day – which\, when attended to with a certain intention or reverence\, becomes something perhaps a little marvelous.” \nChris Lanier is a Teaching Professor of Digital Art at the University of Nevada\, Reno\, teaching both at UNR Lake Tahoe and the Reno campus. He has worked in a variety of media\, including multimedia performance\, digital animation\, web production\, and comics. His work has been displayed\, performed and projected in New York\, San Francisco\, Japan\, Canada\, Britain\, Mexico and Serbia; his animation has screened at Sundance\, and won the Grand Prize for Internet Animation at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. \nhttps://www.instagram.com/chrislanier

I started the curation of Meaning is Always Here by trying to imagine a persona the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art might present to Nevadans that live far away and cannot reach us. We at the Museum think we have a good sense of who we are\, but how do others perceive us? We shift. Our exhibitions change. Therefore\, this exhibition should show that change with artists from different backgrounds and media. The works should reference the real world and represent a transformation through the artists’ decisions\, so that we can see where they’re coming from. \nMeaning is always here…I think about the artworks that couldn’t be included in this traveling show for reasons of size or fragility. That artwork awaits you here\, at the Barrick Museum of Art. Visit us and see. \nExhibition artists include: Alexander Calder\, Candice Lin\, Chase R. McCurdy\, Kim Rugg\, Krystal Ramirez\, Lucio Pozzi\, Marshall Scheuttle\, Mary Cady Johnson\, Mikayla Whitmore\, Stephen Antonakos\, Tomoko Daido. \nThe Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art is pleased to loan this artwork from our permanent collection to the Nevada Arts Council. It was funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts and the State of Nevada. SUMMARY:Reception: Holland Emerge
DESCRIPTION:Emerge 2023 spotlights the works of four up-and-coming young artists from Northern Nevada who are all active participants in the arts community at the Holland Project. Abbay Anderson\, Nic Blauth\, Ruby Burge\, and Olivia Mier have all taken part in our Work In Progress art program and have contributed artwork to multiple Young Blood exhibitions at the Holland Project. We have had the great privilege of seeing their work grow and evolve over the past few years and it is exciting to witness them define their aesthetic and voice as artists. We are thrilled to be able to share their work in the McKinley Gallery and we can’t wait to see what is next on the horizon for each of these talented young artists. \nThe Holland Project is an all-ages arts and music initiative by young people\, for young people\, in the Truckee Meadows. Holland is non-profit\, volunteer-driven organization that produces more than 250 all-ages events annually in the Reno area. Governed by its members\, volunteer boards and our committees\, Holland seeks to propel Reno’s all-ages movement\, and wholeheartedly support and champion opportunities for young people in our community. \nHolland Project hopes to further identify Reno as a cultural center with a vibrant urban scene where art and music thrive. Holland fundamentally believes that music and art are vital forces\, and that young people have the ability and right to shape and share their culture. All-ages events and opportunities are an important part of any healthy and happening community\, and we’re proud to work to present all-ages offerings. \nGallery East\, located in McKinley Arts & Culture Center is one of three galleries operated by the City of Reno. SUMMARY:Solo Exhibition "Learning to be Lost" by Reno City Artist Rossitza Todorova
DESCRIPTION:Reno\, NV – The Metro Gallery at Reno City Hall is hosting “Learning to be Lost\,” a solo exhibition by 2022-23 Reno City Artist Rossitza Todorova. The show will run from June 19 to August 4\, 2023\, and will showcase new paintings by Todorova that embrace the metaphorical concept of being lost within the desert landscape. \nRossitza Todorova\, a professional artist and Professor of Art at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno\, Nevada\, has an interesting artistic journey that began when she emigrated from Sofia\, Bulgaria\, to Reno\, Nevada\, during her childhood. It was amidst the desert landscape that Todorova’s passion for this awe-inspiring environment was ignited\, guiding the core of her artistic expression. \nIn her art\, Todorova delves into the intricate interplay between the passage of time\, space\, and the intricate tapestry of memory. Her paintings are influenced by the Great Basin and the dynamic boom-and-bust built environment of the West\, blending elements of landscape and geometry. In her work\, Todorova blurs the boundaries between representation and abstraction. \n“In this exhibition\, I use the desert landscape as a metaphor for navigating life’s uncertainties. I invite viewers to contemplate their own paths\, acknowledging the moments when goals and reality may diverge. Drawing inspiration from the desert survival strategies like navigating by the stars and discerning mirages\, I seek to evoke a visceral experience of being lost\, ultimately finding solace in the shared human pursuit of traversing uncertainty.” For more information about the artist\, visit rossitza.art.

SUMMARY:TMCC Portfolio Emphasis Class Presents: "Calm Spaces\," "Head Case\," & "Morte"
DESCRIPTION:Gallery West in the McKinley Arts & Culture Center is proud to host an exhibition featuring works from students in the 2022 Portfolio Emphasis Class at Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC). The exhibition includes three parts: “Calm Spaces” by Julianna Horvath\, “Head Case” by Ryan Hartman\, and “Morte by Maggie Pollock.” \nThe Portfolio Emphasis class is the capstone class to a fine arts degree at TMCC\, where students learn to create a body of work and host a professional art exhibition from start to finish. The exhibition will run from December 19\, 2022 to February 10\, 2023 in McKinley Arts and Culture Center\, Gallery West. The public is invited to attend the artists’ reception on Thursday\, January 19\, 2023 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \n“Calm Spaces” \nIn “Calm Spaces\,” Horvath looks to evoke feelings of calmness\, rest\, and relaxation. Using collage and painting\, she creates imagery that invites the viewer to feel peace and quiet. The world today is chaotic and overwhelming. Her goal is to create art\, with imagery that allows for detail-oriented introspection\, through images filled with nature\, neutral tones\, floral patterns\, embellishments\, and intricate details. Her hope that when viewed\, these pieces give someone a moment of rest. \n “Head Case” \n“Head Case” is a collection of sculptures that focuses on showing mental disorders through anthropomorphized and abstract characters. Individuals with mental disorders commonly attempt to cope with their problems and mask themselves to fit into “normal” social environments. This collection is meant to teach the audience about these issues through details and mannerisms portrayed in each character that symbolize coping mechanisms and side effects caused by certain disorders. It’s natural to anthropomorphize objects\, animals\, and other arts in order to relate their issues so that others can relate to them. Hartman’s focus in these sculptures is to imagine these characters in physical form but not make them realistic. His art style is semi-realistic with rustic coloring\, proper portions with exaggerated expressions\, and details to emphasize my symbolism. Hartman wants his audience to be drawn in by the exaggerated details. \n\n“Morte” \nMaggie Pollock’s goal with her series\, “Morte\,” is to provoke conversations about loss and grief through her art. Each of her paintings is a reflection of a person close to her who has passed. She is painting to imitate the Italian renaissance style\, using oil paint on canvas. She set up each still life to have small things that are full of symbolism and meaning that point to her grief without it being obvious. For example\, she includes flowers in many of her paintings. Plant symbolism has been used to convey particular meanings going back to the Middle Ages\, through the Renaissance\, and into the Victorian Era. Today\, not as many are familiar with the messages of flowers\, but through her interest and research\, she includes their hidden meanings to portray her emotions about the person she is mourning. She wants to show that even after someone is gone\, she can still hold love for them. Pollock would like the viewer to try and understand each pieces meaning and to reflect on their own experiences with loss. She would like to bring light to some of the more beautiful aspects of grief\, as it can make one see the beauty of life and make us appreciate it more. Overall\, Pollock hopes to create a sense of sadness and wonder in each piece. We all will experience grief in our lives\, it is an unavoidable thing\, but we can also celebrate the beauty of each person for who they were and the life they got to live. \n
