SUMMARY:Three Generations of Polarized Light Art
DESCRIPTION:In the 1960s\, a time of cross-pollination in art and science\, Austine’s engagement with light and optics was shaped by her discovery of the phenomena of polarized light from her first husband\, astronomer and physicist H. John Wood. In 1967\, Austine developed a new light-based medium that she called Polage. By collaging clear cellophane between cross-polarizing filters\, she began producing full color artworks without using any pigments or dyes. \nSelecting for specific wavelengths from the prismatic spectrum of color in natural light produces her color palette. Colors plucked from light are vibrantly alive and will shift and change as the filters rotate or as the viewer moves about\, making the perception of the art an active component of the work. \nIn 1976\, Austine and her husband\, David Comarow moved to the Las Vegas area. They worked together to establish a long-lasting studio practice and refined her Polage medium and methods of display\, leading to many innovations and commissions over the following decades. Their first studio gallery opened in Boulder City\, Nevada\, in 1985. \nThat same year\, Austine’s eldest daughter\, Cara Wood Ginder\, began working for Austine Studios as an art assistant\, fabricator\, and studio manager. This began a longtime artistic partnership with her mother\, which grew into full design collaboration in later years. \nIn 1998\, Austine’s younger daughter\, Erika Wood\, became part of the studio\, later focusing on designing hybrid production methods that enabled Polage artworks to be created in carefully controlled multiples\, comparable to traditional printmaking. \nAt that time\, Austine Studios entered a long-term relationship with Maui Jim sunglasses\, bringing the medium into dialogue with applied optics and polarized-lens technology as they secured an exclusive on Austine Studios artwork in optical boutiques worldwide. \nIn 2018\, Cara accepted the position of full-time lead artist and studio director of Austine Studios. Her daughter\, Charlotte Ginder\, joined the studio in 2019; the third generation to work in the family business of Polage. \nAfter Austine’s sudden passing in 2020\, Cara\, Erika\, and Charlotte kept up the family legacy as the artists of Austine Studios until it closed in 2025. \nAustine’s art is on view in the permanent collections of the Museum of Science\, Boston; the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science; and Swarthmore College\, among others\, appearing in museums\, hospitals\, public spaces\, and private collections around the world. \nThe nearby Spring Mountains Visitor’s Center\, just outside Las Vegas on Mt. Charleston\, features a 75-foot-long Polage art mural celebrating the flora and fauna of the desert that inspired so much of her work. \nToday Cara and Erika have launched a new collaboration\, Lightread Studios\, where they continue their work together creating polarized light artworks and commissions. \nOn exhibit at Sahara West Library\, 9600 W Sahara Ave. Las Vegas\, Nevada\, through May 2\, 2026.

SUMMARY:"The Traveler" Creative Aging Writing & Storytelling Session
DESCRIPTION:“The Traveler” Creative Aging Writing & Storytelling Workshops\n\n\n\nTravel is wherever your mind takes you and memories await you!\n\n\n\nThe best way to memorialize your travels through life is to write about them and/or talk about them. In this fun\, interactive writing and storytelling workshop for older adults\, you’ll have the opportunity to do both.\n\n\n\nJoin Nevada Arts Council and Lifetime Arts teaching artist\, Joylynn M. Ross\, and your fellow Nevadans or drop-in visitors for 90 minutes of reliving and retelling a moment worth writing and talking about.\n\nThe focus and theme is a moment from one of your past travels. If you need help unearthing one of those experiences\, don’t worry. There will be plenty of hands-on assistance and engaging prompts provided to you by your instructor and your peers … because in this workshop\, each participant is both the student and the teacher. No one will have to travel this writing and storytelling journey alone!\n\n\n\nAnd keep in mind that traveling doesn’t have to be in a plane\, train\, boat\, or automobile across the map. It can be a mind traveling experience to a make-believe world\, or traveling from one side of town to another\, to a local event or one far\, far away. Again\, travel is wherever your mind takes you . . . even if it’s simply traveling back in time to recall a moment from your past.\n\n\nRoss will be presenting four Creative Aging older adult writing and storytelling sessions at various Las-Vegas Clark County Library District branches throughout the summer for the 55+ community. If in the Las Vegas\, Nevada area\, feel free to drop in for any or all of the following sessions that are FREE for you to attend:\n\n\n\n“The Traveler” Writing & Storytelling Workshop for the 55+ Community\n\n\n\n\nJuly 11 (Friday)\nCentennial Hills Library\n6711 N. SUMMARY:"And Then They Came For Us" - Documentary Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month\, join Nevada Humanities and The Library District for a special screening of the award-winning documentary And Then They Came For Us (2017\, NR\, 40 minutes) about the unjust incarceration of over 120\,000 Japanese Americans during World War II\, followed by an open forum discussion with the audience. \nThrough the use of newly released photos taken by Dorothea Lange\, Ansel Adams and others\, plus the eyewitness testimony from incarcerated survivors such as George Takei and Fred Korematsu\, the film exposes the damage Executive Order 9066 did to 120\,000 people of Japanese descent who were forcibly removed from their homes along the U.S. Pacific Coast\, two-thirds of whom were American-born citizens. In addition to demonstrating the civil rights violations against persons of Japanese ancestry during WWII in America\, And Then They Came For Us follows contemporary Japanese American activists as they speak out against the Muslim registry and travel ban post 9/11. \nKnowing our civil history is the first step in making sure we do not repeat such mistakes. After the documentary screening\, stay for a discussion about the Japanese American evacuation and forced internment during WWII\, Executive Order 9066\, and parallel civil rights violations against Asians today. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come\, first served basis and may be limited. For more information\, please call 702-507-3458.

SUMMARY:Lee Lanier: You Write the Story
DESCRIPTION:Lee Lanier\, of Lee Lanier Paints Art Gallery located in the Arts Factory\, has created this interactive exhibit inviting viewers to write the narratives for his quirky\, acrylic paintings. Lanier created the exhibit based on his opinion that visitors to LLPAG often had more interesting interpretations of his paintings than he did. The characters in the paintings interact with surrounding objects or each other\, and are often based on mythological\, literary\, or pop-culture archetypes. Although these paintings are narrative in nature\, they present scenes midway through a particular tale so that the viewer can decide what is transpiring. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nI am fascinated with old stories. The inspiration for my works almost always starts with a historical\, literary\, and mythological character. Like Renaissance artists\, I weave complex narratives with multiple posed figures. I am drawn to universal human themes such as life and death\, temptation and faith\, and creativity and industry. My end goal is to create works of art that can be viewed multiple times while inspiring spirited conversations among groups of dissimilar viewers. \nOn exhibit at Windmill Library from February 13\, 2024 through April 28\, 2024

SUMMARY:Shellise Berry: Creation\, Promises\, & Instructions
DESCRIPTION:Shellise Berry creates vibrant paintings intended to emanate a sense of peace\, hope\, and serenity. Her process of layering colors by making marks produces a painting with the purpose of telling a story that is spiritual and thought provoking. Her art is a combination of three styles; the non-naturalistic color use of Fauvism\, the spontaneous brush strokes of Abstract Expressionism\, and the focus of Symbolism on embedded meaning or ideas. The finished paintings are modern interpretations of stories from the Bible\, and evidence of the artist’s deep relationship with her faith. \nberrysdivinedesigns.com \nOn exhibit at West Las Vegas from January 18\, 2024 through April 2\, 2024 \n

SUMMARY:From the Beginning to the End
DESCRIPTION:Biblically inspired paintings of the beginning and the end by Dayo Adelaja\, Bill Bon\, Harold Bradford\, Dyron Boyd\, Jeannie Earhart\, Adolfo Gonzalez\, Cecilia Lary\, and Rita Maroun. \nOver seven years ago some of the artists from Left of Center Art Gallery started meeting on Saturday mornings to have morning prayer and breakfast at my home before heading over to the gallery. One of our greatest blessings is the fact that we were all given the gift of art. We wanted to give thanks to God and glorify Him in some way\, for this awesome talent that we all share. We began to think about ways we could interpret certain events that occurred in scripture and translate them into our paintings. There are floods of subject matter within the scriptures\, and it can be challenging to tell the stories visually. \nThe main reason we chose to title this show From the Beginning to the End is because the paintings are primarily based on the book of Genesis\, which is the first book of the Bible\, and the book of Revelations\, which is the last. With the current events happening all over the world\, we have been asked whether we had premonitions that prompted these paintings. My answer is\, we have all had premonitions\, and we are choosing to tell the stories from our own perspectives\, hoping to leave a lasting impression upon the viewer. \n~ Harold Bradford \nOn exhibit at Sahara West Library from December 8\, 2023 through February 24\, 2024 \nReception on Thursday\, December 14 from 5-7 p.m.

SUMMARY:Judith Klausner: (de)composed
DESCRIPTION:(de)composed  features small sculptures depicting decomposing matter created through the appreciative lens of a disabled artist. \nArtist Statement\nOften when something has “gone bad\,” it gives rise to something new\, but it can be hard to appreciate new growth in the shadow of our disappointment. I like the idea of spending hours meticulously crafting something that most people think of as ruined. Even my materials are an exercise in reevaluating the underappreciated: my primary medium is generally dismissed as “for kids.” \nThis work reflects my own journey to reframe my life as a disabled person. I spent a decade only seeing the ways my life hadn’t turned out how I had expected\, and seeing those discrepancies as failures. It has only been by readjusting my lens that I have learned to appreciate the life I do have. I am finally allowing myself to be happy. \nI believe this theme also taps into a larger experience that is particularly strong right now. The past 2+ years of pandemic have derailed what many people expected from their lives. We have all had to reframe our expectations and our sources of joy. I hope this work can reflect those experiences\, too\, and help encourage the (sometimes painful) growth it takes to make that shift. \nThe work in (de)composed was made with a self-imposed rule that every element had to be created. Every rock\, popsicle stick\, and sweaty slice of cheese is painstakingly sculpted and detailed by hand. This mandate pushed me to learn new ways of looking at familiar objects\, as well as new ways of using a familiar material. \nJudith Klausner is a Somerville\, MA artist with a love for small\, intricate\, and overlooked things. She received her degree in Studio Art from Wesleyan University in 2007 after constructing her thesis primarily out of insects\, and has since continued to search the details of her surroundings for inspiration.
