SUMMARY:The Future in Rearview: Stories from the Edge of Then and Now
DESCRIPTION:Nevada Humanities continues its partnership with the Desert Research Institute on Curiosity Lab by DRI—a series of events in Reno and Las Vegas that brings together storytellers from science\, the humanities\, and the arts to illuminate our shared connection to the state of Nevada. \nJoin us for an evening that weaves together water\, memory\, innovation\, and imagination—exploring how the choices we make today ripple into the future. While the 1997 flood offers a powerful point of reflection\, this program looks beyond a single event to examine Nevada’s evolving relationship with water through science\, personal story\, and creative practice. \nFrom the hidden water demands of emerging technologies and energy growth\, to a fifth-generation farmer’s journey into groundwater science\, to the transformative power of creativity in science education\, our storytellers reveal how curiosity and lived experience shape the way we understand and steward our world. \nCome discover how stories—both personal and collective—can deepen insight\, spark connection\, and help illuminate the path forward. \nRefreshments and cocktails from 10 Torr Distillery and Brewery will be provided. \nFor more information about the speakers at this Curiosity Lab event\, please visit the DRI website.

SUMMARY:The Possible Unknown: Stories of Exploring the Unreachable
DESCRIPTION:Nevada Humanities is partnering with the Desert Research Institute on a new series of events in Reno and Las Vegas. Curiosity Lab by DRI brings together storytellers from science\, the humanities\, and the arts to illuminate our shared connection to the state of Nevada. \nJoin us for an evening of storytelling that delves into the mysteries of exploring what once seemed unreachable. The Possible Unknown highlights stories of curiosity\, innovation\, and determination that open doors to new frontiers—whether through groundbreaking technology\, scientific discovery\, or personal journeys. Discover how the impossible becomes possible and the unknown becomes accessible to all. \nDRI Storyteller: Megan Stueve\, assistant research scientist\, anthropology/archaeology at DRI\, will tell a story that is still unfolding. Stueve is documenting hiking trails throughout state parks in Nevada using 3D technology. The result is an immersive and accessible digital space where visitors can explore Nevada hiking trails even if hiking those trails is physically impossible. \nFeatured Storyteller: Ryan Cooper has spent the last decade building world-class endurance races and most recently for the IRONMAN Group\, all while chasing his own dreams—but one journey changed everything. Cooper invites audiences to reflect on what it means to chase dreams\, confront loss\, and find meaning in the mountains—both literal and metaphorical. \nAdvanced registration is required for this event. Please follow the link below to purchase your tickets for this event; tickets start at $15.

SUMMARY:Las Vegas Writes Book Launch and Conversation with the Authors
DESCRIPTION:When the lake runs dry\, we’ll know the value of water. \nMonsoon Season: Las Vegas Writers on Water in the Desert\, the 16th volume in the acclaimed Las Vegas Writes series\, gathers a powerful chorus of voices exploring the desert city’s resilience and hidden beauty. Join Nevada Humanities and the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District for a conversation with featured Monsoon Season authors Erika Dagri\, Sally Denton\, Scott Dickensheets\, JM Huck\, Andrew S. Nicholson\, Marlene Roque\, Geoff Schumacher\, John L. Smith\, and editor Jarret Keene. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Book sales and signing to follow. \nLegendary Nevada writers John L. Smith\, Geoff Schumacher\, and Scott Dickensheets deliver moving essays on loss—of innocence\, water\, love—reminding us why they remain pillars of the region’s literary landscape. Rising talents Marlene Roque\, JM Huck\, and Erika Dagri bring fresh perspectives\, writing with generosity and tenderness about Hispanic machismo\, Southwestern art\, and the rare magic of desert rain. Iconic Nevada author and historian Sally Denton provides a lovely overview of Las Vegas that reminds us of our city’s hold on the popular imagination. University of Nevada\, Las Vegas professor Andrew S. Nicholson\, meanwhile\, closes the collection with a luminous prose poem. Early nature writer Mary Austin’s essay “The Land of Little Rain” is reprinted here\, too. Finally\, local comics artist Safiyya Bintali provides the cover illustration. \nWith the support of Huntington Press and Nevada Humanities\, Monsoon Season affirms the vitality of the Las Vegas literary scene in these arid and parched times. These essays testify to a city that\, like Southern Nevada itself\, endures and astonishes when the rains finally arrive.

SUMMARY:"And Then They Came For Us" - Documentary Screening and Discussion
DESCRIPTION:In recognition of Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month\, join Nevada Humanities and The Library District for a special screening of the award-winning documentary And Then They Came For Us (2017\, NR\, 40 minutes) about the unjust incarceration of over 120\,000 Japanese Americans during World War II\, followed by an open forum discussion with the audience. \nThrough the use of newly released photos taken by Dorothea Lange\, Ansel Adams and others\, plus the eyewitness testimony from incarcerated survivors such as George Takei and Fred Korematsu\, the film exposes the damage Executive Order 9066 did to 120\,000 people of Japanese descent who were forcibly removed from their homes along the U.S. Pacific Coast\, two-thirds of whom were American-born citizens. In addition to demonstrating the civil rights violations against persons of Japanese ancestry during WWII in America\, And Then They Came For Us follows contemporary Japanese American activists as they speak out against the Muslim registry and travel ban post 9/11. \nKnowing our civil history is the first step in making sure we do not repeat such mistakes. After the documentary screening\, stay for a discussion about the Japanese American evacuation and forced internment during WWII\, Executive Order 9066\, and parallel civil rights violations against Asians today. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come\, first served basis and may be limited. For more information\, please call 702-507-3458.
