Poet-Laureate

The Nevada Poet Laureate

Shaun Griffin was appointed Nevada Poet Laureate on May 1, 2024, and will serve through April 30, 2026.

What is a Poet Laureate?

The Nevada State Poet Laureate helps share the joy of poetry across the state. They give readings, visit communities, and lead workshops that inspire people to read, write, and learn. During their term, they also take on a special project to bring poetry to more Nevadans — especially those who may not have easy access to the arts. The Nevada Arts Council runs the selection process and recommends finalists to the Governor, who makes the final choice.

In-Person Appearances/Expected Travel

A minimum of two in-person or online readings targeting a variety of cultural communities and geographic areas of the state per quarter, including the Governor’s inauguration, the Nevada Arts Council Conference, the Governor’s Conference on Tourism, Nevada State Poetry Out Loud Finals, and other events to be determined. Laureates are encouraged to gather requests for participation in events and consider them in cooperation with the Nevada Arts Council on a bi-monthly or quarterly basis when setting their schedule.

Project

The Nevada Poet Laureate is expected to complete a meaningful project during their term. This project should bring poetry to people or communities in Nevada that may not have much access to it. The Poet Laureate will connect with different groups across the state through public events, readings, workshops, and online platforms. The details and budget for the project will be planned with Nevada Arts Council staff after the appointment.

Recognition

The Nevada Poet Laureate will be awarded a $5,000 honorarium each year to offset the cost of travel to public engagements and to fund the two-year project requirement. This grant also serves to acknowledge and recognize the Nevada Poet Laureate’s time and talents. Compensation from the Nevada Arts Council may be considered taxable income.

Funding for the Nevada Poet Laureate Program is provided by:

State of Nevada, Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs and the National Endowment for the Arts.
