Veterans Initiatives

The Nevada Arts Council collaborates with partners who work with veterans to improve veterans’ quality of life through arts and creativity. Working with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the Nevada Department of Veterans Affairs, we help develop and fund programs that support healing and well-being.

Program overview

Arts and creativity are among the most effective tools for addressing trauma, depression, and anxiety—especially for our nation’s veterans. Building on our success with Creative Aging, the Arts Council plans to expand this work to support veterans through therapeutic art-making programs.

Our approach to developing programs that benefit veterans includes:

Strategic Planning–Nevada Art Council staff meet with stakeholders from Veterans Affairs for training and planning. These interactions strengthen the connection between the veteran community and arts community and help create a plan for integrating art and wellness that is effective, funded, and sustainable.

Therapeutic Art-Making—To help make art and creativity more accessible to more Nevadans, the Nevada Art Council supports programs in veteran support centers and rehabilitation centers, as well as senior centers and correctional facilities. Our support typically includes awarding grants to teaching artists to provide classes in these facilities.

These programs are designed to offer healing, skill-building, and community connection through arts experiences and creative expression.
