Gig Depio

Las Vegas-based Filipino painter Gig Depio presents the conjunctions of contemporary and historical forces in the form of intense, often large-scale, figurative compositions that explore the convergence of American, Philippine, and Spanish histories at the turn of the 20th century. Depio’s paintings reflect a spectator’s view of how one’s culture unfolds and evolves in a global theater of technological and economic development. His interest in historical events contemplates his ‘situatedness’ in contemporary American society, finding himself inescapably embedded in its history.

Recipient of the 2016 and 2023 Nevada Arts Council Fellowship Grant in painting, Depio has exhibited across Nevada, shows at the Nevada Museum of Art, the University of Nevada Las Vegas, the University of Nevada in Reno, and the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art, among others. Depio has been an exponent of public, nonprofit and independent art in Nevada since 2009, with major mural pieces in the collection of the City of Las Vegas and Clark County Public Art. He has recently extended his advocacy internationally, including exhibitions with the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA), Manila, Philippine, in Italy at the 58th Venice Biennale in Venice, and in the United Kingdom.
