Jinny Tomozy

Jinny Tomozy is a painter and educator based in Reno, Nevada. Her work ranges from realism to abstraction and often settles somewhere in between. She is continuously searching for the parallel between the contrasting styles and loves to grapple over when to be explicit and when to be intuitive. Her work is a delicate balance uniting traditional form and intuitive mark-making. She fixates on the interplays of color sequences and the response to the light and atmosphere to develop a tangible feeling of that space and time. She describes her paintings as a conduit for shared emotions, as they often draw up memories or feelings of places that are familiar.

Growing up exploring the Sierra Nevada, Tomozy developed a deep gratitude for life and nature in the high desert. After high school, she spent the next 21 years in San Francisco. Tomozy earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting at the Academy of Art University and was offered a teaching position upon graduating. She held a variety of roles at the university, including associate director of foundations and academic vice president. When she moved back home in 2016, she rediscovered the immense beauty of this region and its colorful, growing art community. She spends her days painting in her studio and sharing her world with her students at AAU, Truckee Meadows Community College, and the University of Nevada, Reno.
