Tia Flores

  • Visual Arts

Tia Flores is a Nevada native, artist, arts educator, and arts advocate. Her culturally themed pyrographic sculptures have been featured on HGTV's That’s Clever!, Voices of America, PBS ArtEffects, Pyrography Magazine, and Women Artists of the Great Basin by Mary Lee Fulkerson.

The act of art making has always played a significant role in Flores' life. Her artwork and designs are greatly influenced by her two families. From her maternal grandmother, she is inspired by the vast beauty of the Nevada desert and its natural habitat. From her paternal grandmother, she is drawn to the rich cultures of the Aztec and Navajo people and their love and respect for the earth.

Teaching art is Flores' true passion. As a teaching artist with over 25 years of experience, she has worked with people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. As an educator, she taught art for ten years for elementary and high school students, which included digital design and AP Studio Art.

On a humanitarian level, Flores has traveled several times to the Peruvian Amazon jungle to work with women in the remote river villages of Ayacucho and San Juan Yanayacu to assist them in craft making. Natural materials found in the jungle are used to create one of a kind art and the money made from the women’s crafts contribute to their family’s income and the village’s economy.

As an advocate for arts education and arts integration, Flores has been invited to speak at various conferences including the National Art Education Association Convention in San Diego and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Boston and in San Francisco.

In her current role as the Program Director for Sierra Arts Foundation, Flores enjoys collaborating with other organizations and municipalities in identifying how the arts can positively impact our region and designing art programs that address specific community needs, especially for underserved and at-risk populations.
