We Write Las Vegas
- Literary Arts
We Write Las Vegas was founded by JM Huck and Sheila Navarro in 2023 to offer a welcoming space, inspiration, and ongoing support for Asian American Pacific Islander aspiring and emerging writers to develop their craft. All workshops include excerpts from underrepresented writers, especially AAPI writers. They are designed for people who either identify as Asian or Asian American Pacific Islanders or wish to support Asian American voices.
We Write Las Vegas achieves this by providing a safe and inclusive environment, highlighting underrepresented perspectives in classroom materials and resources, and celebrating and nurturing a new generation of writers.
We Write Las Vegas strives to demonstrate that the AAPI experience is not a monolith; the diaspora is inclusive of multiple perspectives and nuances. Asian Americans are one of the country's fastest-growing groups, making up 12% of the population in Las Vegas. We Write Las Vegas believes everyone has a story, and more diverse stories need to be told. They support expanding Asian American narratives through building community, providing resources, and honoring individual writing growth. They welcome all people who support the Asian diaspora.
We Write Las Vegas believes that literary arts should be accessible, and we work hard to offer free programs (in-person/online/hybrid).
School & community workshops
Past workshops:
Hip Hop Poetry
In this generative writing class, participants read lyrics from hip-hop artists and write poems inspired by those lyrics.
Inspiration from Place
Diaspora relates to place-making. Participants will investigate “place” by reading examples of works about place, responding to prompts, and exploring venues, such as nature parks and historical buildings.
Kain Tayo!
Participants will respond to a selection of writings by AAPI authors and explore the cultural heritage, familial connections, individual experiences, and culinary experiences as expressed through literature centered around food. In the past, this has included samples of Asian food.
Nurturing Narratives (cohort model)
Participants will create and work towards writing goals. In each session, members will learn and practice the basic elements of storytelling, such as plot, characterization, setting, etc. Classes will include community-building activities, guest speakers and celebrations for writing goals. The curriculum will include work by underrepresented writers.
RepresentAsian
This offering focuses on Asian female authors and is divided between discussion and creative writing. In the past, this has been offered as a weekly series.
We Write Forms
Examine and replicate traditional Asian literary forms, such as the Japanese haiku, haiga, and others.
