Black Butterfly Film Screening

Experience Black Butterfly, a new film about the power of Black women. This transformative documentary features interviews with five Las Vegans, including writer and curator Erica Vital-Lazare, social worker Sparkle Williams, and Dr. Tonya E. Walls, founder and executive director of the nonprofit organization Code Switch: Restorative Justice for Girls of Color. Viewers will be uplifted by dancers Jazmyn Lopez, Nicole Palacio, and Tuwani Palacio. West Las Vegas vocalist Chimini-Yoka Branch contributes an original song.
Filmmaker Aaliyah Fafanto, herself a Queer Black poet, educator, and activist, explains that “This documentary highlights, documents, and celebrates Black women, focusing on their journeys, life lessons, and advice. The film aims to inspire young Black girls and gender-expansive youth by showcasing the strength, resilience, and wisdom of those who have paved the way. With the intent to uplift and empower, the documentary encourages these young individuals to keep going, despite the obstacles they may face.”
The film screening will be followed by a Q&A session with the director.
Black Butterfly will be screened at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, in the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art auditorium. Everyone is welcome. Attendance is free. Parking in staff, student, and visitor spots on the campus around the museum is free after 7 p.m.
