About this event

  • 1 hour

Luis Varela-Rico, a celebrated Las Vegas-based sculpture artist, shares his knowledge and experience gained in working on multiple public are projects.

Born in Guadalajara, Mexico, and a resident of Las Vegas for more than twenty-five years. Varela-Rico has a long-standing interest in learning “how things work” and this pursuit had led him to be mechanically oriented in his art practice. Luis will discuss his creative approach to developing, managing and budgeting for public art projects. The conversation will encourage questions and seek audience engagement.

Sculpture pictured: Radial Symmetry, located in the Arts District downtown at Main and Commerce streets. The work is made of two large steel sculptures, inspired by Southern Paiute basket weaving. Both pieces are 16-feet-by-16-feet, weighing 10 tons a piece.
