Commissioner William McCurdy II and Clark County Parks & Recreation’s Public Arts Office invite the public for the unveiling of the Walnut Playground Mural and Walnut Empowerment Art! at the Walnut Community Center, 3075 N. Walnut Road, on Thursday, Aug. 6, at 4 p.m.
The 6th Empowerment Art! Project, by local artist Bethsabee Nieves, was installed in November of 2025 inside the bathroom facilities. Bethsabee led workshops with the youth about empowerment during the summer program hosted by Walnut Community Center. From the workshops, Bethsabee took inspiration and designed digital artwork that was printed and installed as vinyl wraps on the stall doors.
The Walnut Playground Mural began in April of this year and was completed in June by local artist Matthew Murphy aka Black57. Black57 transformed a blank canvas into a stunning, living masterpiece that perfectly mirrors the energy, diversity, and spirit of the Walnut community. The imagery displays children swimming, playing basketball, playing the trumpet, and holding a paintbrush and paint. Murphy drew inspiration from a community survey that was administered by Nevada Shakespeare Festival. The theater troop interviewed the community while they were playing at the playground.
“Community input is a vital role in public art. We hope the children see themselves in this mural”, said Patrick Almeido, director of parks and recreation.
