Henderson’s Joseph Watson debuts paintings at LXS Gallery in the Nevada Legislative Building

“The Observation and Conclusion,” debuts at the Nevada Arts Council’s LXS Gallery at the Nevada State Legislative Building April 6 with paintings by Henderson’s Joseph Watson.
“The work featured in this exhibit uses art as a tool to inspire people to become better individuals and guides others to success, based on my goal of making the world a better place,” Watson said.
The artist grew up in Gardena, Calif., and sketching has been a creative escape for him since his youth, he said. Using the urban and cultural influences from his childhood, his work focuses on everyday life. An observer, Watson sees excitement, danger, culture and love in daily occurrences.
Watson graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 1998 and moved to Las Vegas to participate in the growing art scene. “My color schemes are usually limited to two or three colors. I prefer not to encourage the viewer to get distracted by color,” he said. “Limited color allows viewers to concentrate on the concept of each painting. In general, earthy colors seem appropriate for the communities and situations that I portray.”
Many of Watson’s current paintings are created with the intent of changing the world and making life a more productive and enjoyable experience. Series such as “Urban Flora Collection,” “Crowd Scenes,” “Dog Charts,” and “Women Shopping” have earned him the respect of his art peers. He owns the Joseph Watson Collection, a gallery in the Arts Factory in Las Vegas that exhibits and sells the work of emerging and established artists, specializing in urban inspired art, street art and abstract paintings.
Watson’s exhibit runs through April 24 at LXS. Managed by the NAC’s Artist Services Program, the LXS Gallery space is on the first floor across from the Caucus Deli at 401 S. Carson St., Carson City. LXS is open to the public, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. LXS has exhibited the work of more than 130 Nevada artists since 1985. Artists for the 2015 series were recommended by a committee that included Nate Clark, visual artist and public art assistant, City of Reno; Bobbie Ann Howell, visual artist and program coordinator, Nevada Humanities; and Jennifer Messina, ceramic artist and member of Ely Art Bank.
