Nevada landscapes of Dawn Dot Star in free exhibition at Legislative Building through May 15

The exhibition “White Pine County Artistry,” with landscape paintings of Dawn Dot Star debuts at the Nevada Arts Council’s LXS Gallery at the Nevada State Legislative Building April 27. The artist specializes in watercolor and pencil depictions of rural Nevada.

Approaching landscape in non-traditional format, Dawn Dot Star chooses a vertical canvas instead of an expected horizontal layout to abruptly insulate the landscape and make the viewer focus on the portion painted in the canvas. Star’s compositions allow viewers to focus and reflect on a single bush, tree or rock face, and the fluidity of his marks.

Born John Pierre Klosky in Detroit, MI, Dawn Dot Star said he changes his legal name when he changes his artistic media. As Circe Vavens in Detroit, he created glass art. Formerly of Ely, Star was featured and his work sold at the Ely Art Bank where he was encouraged to pursue his artistic potential. He recently moved to Las Vegas and continues his creative efforts in southern Nevada.

Star’s LXS exhibit runs through May 15. Managed by the NAC’s Artist Services Program, the LXS Gallery space is on the first floor across from the Caucus Deli at 401 S. Carson St., Carson City. LXS is open to the public, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. LXS has exhibited the work of more than 130 Nevada artists since 1985. Artists for the 2015 series were recommended by a committee that included Nate Clark, visual artist and public art assistant, City of Reno; Bobbie Ann Howell, visual artist and program coordinator, Nevada Humanities; and Jennifer Messina, ceramic artist and member of Ely Art Bank.
